Roller Disco... It's a good thing. by idoru

Review by idoru

Rating: 4.00
Tags:
Roller Disco @ CANVAS KINGS CROSS

Thursdays - 8pm to midnight - admission £ 10.

Fridays - 8pm to 2am - admission £ 12.50.

I'd have to say roller skates and alcohol shouldn't work. Maybe if they were roller blades? They're so much easier to control! This was my thinking when my friend asked if I wanted to join her and her work mates for a Friday night Roller Disco party. The dress was 70/80's so wed night found us at primark looking for well.. hideous and bright& apparently there's prizes for the best outfits, ours definitely went on the bad taste tip.

We went as a group arriving at about 8.30, the group booking meant we got in faster as there's nothing worse than queuing in bad outfits amongst people who are pulling them off. They're pretty strict on the ID as it mentions on the website I nearly didn't get in and I'm 25! There's a large coat check at the door and you enter up on the first floor& Roller Disco kings cross is held in canvas if you know the space. It was great, I was met by cheesy soul tunes lots of garish pink lighting and random people grabbing me, holding on for a while then apologising! The entry fee of 12.50 included the skate hire so I turned in my flats and headed to the ample seating to try on my skates& once on and adjusted I pulled my leg warmers over the top (as is the fashion) and headed to the bar picturing my first broken bone in the form of my wrist.

The first dance floor is for beginners with the marshal skating around forwards and backwards (show off) using a whistle to move clumps of unsteady skaters along.. They seemed to gather at the end of each rail.. Nurses in small pvc outfits escort injured skaters off the dance floor, making it a bit of a show& I wonder where they all ended up after, I wonder if they were nurses at all the outfits had crosses on them so one just assumes&

When you're ready you go down a ramp to the second floor and bar, and through the second floor.. (for skaters only) is the big room with the best music and the best moves, I was back to the my early school social years of trying to dance cool to impress the boys that could dance cool& But I didn't buy into it for long as I thought do I really think I can attract one of these skating all stars with my unsteady 360's, how can I get them to the bar to use my drinking prowess, wit and good humour! Then I thought maybe if they spend they're Friday nights doing this we might not have so much in common&.

By 10.45 I had turned in my skates and was firmly ensconced at the second floor bar, with not a broken bone or injury in sight. I must admit to laughing when people would randomly have their feet come from under them whilst chatting up some potential partner and not minding the occasional collision with HBOS (hot boy on skates) it's a great conversation starter.

We stayed till about 12 and moved on to another bar happy and skated out, I'd definitely recommend this to anyone as a novelty night out and I think going as a group is the best approach as it's a big place. The crowd hits its peak at about 10.30 and starts to ease off from there, it's a big mixture, lots of good looking younger people dressed up the night I went, I probably won't go again but I'm happy to say I've done it once.
