newcastle's best kept secret by jaws

Review by jaws

Rating: 4.00
Tags:
The cluny is down ouseburn. It has a good ale selection and frequent live music and gigs. The bar is nice enough, and as a gig venue it is very good, quite small so lots of atmosphere. Lighting and sound quality are average to good.

One down side is that the cluny is quite isolated from other places to go out in Newcastle upon tyne, although if you have a car then this is not a problem. But walking there from the station is a bit of a trek. All in all though I recommend this place ⬠great for gigs and for its drink selection.

There is live music most nights, and a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The Cluny is not somewhere that the passer by would generally seek to venture into, and therefore remains the domain of the locals and the students. It does seem to primarily attract a younger crowd, however all seem very welcome. Being slightly off the beaten track keeps this pub hidden, although it is clean and comfortable. I have even seen a wedding reception held here! The area is currently regenerating, and I would expect this to be one of the next places to be in Newcastle.

If your looking for a quality bar with a friendly atmosphere, an unrivalled selection of regular live music, great drinks including alot of regional and exotic beers, and a general good time, the Cluny is the place for you.

Located on the banks of the ouseburn, just outside the city centre, summer drinking frequently spills out into something of a hilly beer garden to it's side.

The kitchen there is pretty top notch also with Sunday dinners being absolutely delicioso.

But the venue there is the real clincher, great sound even if a little hot, and great bands over the years, including Daniel Johnston at one point, cement it's legendary status as the place to get away from the charvas in the city centre!

It has a great atmosphere and is full of friendly staff and people. The Cluny serves a great selection of food at very reasonable prices till about 9 at night, the Sunday lunches are also exquisite. It also has a great selection of real ales and international beers at low prices; there is always a new exotic beer to try out.

The Cluny also puts on a large selection of great live music acts, itâ¬"s a truly unique pub of which there is only a few in Newcastle upon Tyne.

It's so tucked away that you could almost imagine it was your own little secret, were it not for the many loyal fans it has.

Great food & great drinks, and great prices too. Great music as well. Small enough to be intimate, not too small to feel like a dead end.

The Cluny has a wide range of Belgiun beers in bottles, three or four different ciders, four or five bitters and a handful of different lagers. They serve a brilliant pint, and no arguement.

Great food - a tiny kitchin that does a brilliant Sunday lunch (I like the lamb), a great burger (even the veggie burger is good). The lady who runs the kitchen is mad as a bag of cats, but I've chatted over the bar to her about food and beer for a good hour.

Great music - every good gig I've been to has been in the back room of the Cluny. Everybody to come out of the North East in the last few years has played there: Maximo Park, Futureheads, A Women of No Importance, John Egdell, everybody.

I've no good photos showing the inside but here are some to try:http://www.flickr.com/photos/oliwood/tags/cluny
It gets a little full of tready indie boys, but it's always a great night.
