The best modern Japanese in London by herrylaw

Review by herrylaw

Rating: 5.00
Tags:
Zuma is where we go for our extra-special-sod-the-wallet celebrations. Ayako, my wife loves it for the truly excellent modern Japanese food (generously overlooking the fact that the chef is German) while our daughter loves it for its high-class buzz and celebrity pulling-power (Russell Crowe et al). Service is exemplary; the waiters are brilliant at explaining the frankly rather complicated menu and recommending dishes - so that you end up with a smooth and seemingly endless feast that has to include: asparagus tempura, crispy fried squid with green chilli, mouthwatering wagyu beef, black cod with miso, superb sushi and sashimi (very unusual in London) and anything with wasabi mayonnaise. Everything should be shared and is, except, unfortunately, the bill. The wine list is long on spicy or smoky wines that go well with Japanese food, like the Franz Haas Traminer from Alto Adige. The sofa seating behind the bar is a good place to chose to eat and watch the parade of London's fashionable young things

Nothing disappointed!!

Miso marinated black cod was a revelation. Rich and dense flesh matched with the slightly sweet marinade. Foie gras (also marinated in miso) with a salted plum 'relish' was a fantastic combination. Soft shell crab beatifully crisp and tasty. The best tempura I have ever had. Skillfully rolled to order sushi is unbeatable with so many variations. Sashimi sea bass with truffle dressing, japanese aubergine and salmon 'caviar' was very interseting in the mouth. I could go on for a while!! However I will mention the Wagyu beef, incredibly expensive but an experience in itself, if you can afford it dont stop to think, order it!!!

Very trendy too, well worth a visit.

Produce is of high quality e.g. blue fin tuna. The sashimi and rolls e.g. spider crab roll, are superb. Seasoning is skilled and few dishes disappoint. It cna be a little intimidating as it is rather self-consciously trendy, and this is one of the few criticisms that one can make. Its sister restaurant, also good, is roka. See www.andyhayler.com for more on ZUma and Roka.

Confounded by the extensive menu we placed ourselves in the waiter's hands and were blown over by the flavours, the quality and the service.
Somewhere to keep under your hat for that special occassion - or even more often if your eyes aren't watering from the bill.
