It started innocently enough, it wasn't too busy (it was quite early) and we were seated quickly. Then the menu's came. I don't really know what i expected, probably the standard chinese menu - but this is most definately not that! I really didn't know what to have, so my friends who have been here a few times ordered for me. I actually have no idea what i had during the meal, but it was absolutely delicious. Some of it tasted like chicken, but based on the menu, i expect it wasn't! Prices are pretty good too, you really do get a lot!

Rare gastronomic adventure by Hugo

This is rough around the edges and not a smooth experience for people who want a sanitised or normal Chinese meal - go elsewhere. Indeed, one local couple who were sharing our table did indeed leave after not finding their usuals on the menu and were horrified at the assortment of chickens feet, beef stomach, frogs legs and pigeon (English) that littered the mostly Chinese menu.

A friend who lives in the area highly recommended Wing Sing Inn though and I was itching to try it: at last a really different Chinese meal based on Northern cuisine and not the standard Cantonese fare.

The meal started amusingly. The restaurant was packed (they recommend bookings) with Chinese people speaking Chinese. Initially we were sat down on a big round table sharing with others but when a bigger group came in and there was a spare smaller table we were, very politely, asked if we minded moving - depsite the fact that we were half way through our soups. Fine by me, just long as the nosh makes the amusement worthwhile.

The menu is very varied and the English is so bad that the best bet is to decifer from the friendly staff what exactly they are talking about. However, the main excitement lies in waiting to see what pitches up.

I started with a tasty spicy cabbage and noodle soup, which was not bad. However the main courses were excellent: spicy aubergines in strong garlic/ ginger sauce, a green vegetable called swamp greens and sea bass brewed in chlli oil/ unidentified herbs that made my mouth tingle in a way I have never experienced before. Great fun. Was irritated not to be able to try out the spicy prawn tails that I wanted and spied on a neighbouring table but I am already looking forward to my return visit...I might also venture a little more off-piste and try some of the more adventurous stuff too.
