I dropped into the Rummer some weeks ago, mainly out of curiosity, as I had heard that this is the location of the oldest inn in Bristol. The old Inn has gone (except for the foundations, perhaps) but the Rummer Hotel claims to be the oldest licensed premises in Bristol.
It is located just off busy Corn Street, close to the Corn Exchange and Corn Street Market. In its current guise, the Rummer is a smart, slightly understated eating and drinking venue. The interior is a nice blend of ancient, timer beams and stone flooring, and a modern, extremely well-stocked bar, comfortable seating and a homely atmosphere.
When I visited, at lunch time, the Rummer was a busy, yet spacious, pleasant place where it was easy to feel comfortable. It is famous for its huge (seriously large) selection of spirits. The choice of vodkas is mind boggling and the different rums available just go to show how varied the luxury spirits market has become in recent years. Similarly, the Rummer's range of whiskies (and whiskeys) is legendary, from exclusive blends, to single malts, to Bourbons and even an Australian blend.
For some reason, I drank a bottle of one of the best, dark, West Country beers I have ever come across. I can't remember its name (it had a dark purple label), nor why I ordered it, but it was an absolute beauty. This has to be one of the best bars in Bristol. It has such a chilled out vibe, especially in winter when the open fire is blazing. The cocktails are amazing and the wine and spirit selection is really impressive. Drinks are reasonably priced considering this is such a nice bar. It often gets busy on the weekend so if you are planning on visiting with a group of friends it is well worth getting on the guest list. It is hard to find a sophisticated venue in Bristol that is not pretentious but The Rummer seems to have hit a good balance. I've been going to The Rummer Hotel on and off for the last year, and every time it gets even better. They have hundreds of spirits packing the backbar, and knowledgeable staff who seem to know what everything is and where it is. Recently they started doing food. Breakfast, lunch and evening tapas. I went in for luinch after reading great reviews and was not disappointed.
In all, a high quality establishment, with a very relaxed atmosphere. (I was asked to keep my voice down by the manager as I was disturbing other guests... fair enough.. I was shouting a bit) A complete antidate to the bland commercialism of Corn Street.
