Just went to Chartier last night June 3, 2009 to find that Chartier is CLOSED untiJuly 1, 2009. The entrance is full of rubble. This explains why their phone has been disconnected for a few weeks. Unfortunately, the jokers at Chartier do not post any closing warning on their web site, and still display the menu and prices of the day [i.e. the menu of June 3, 2009] on the Chartier web site : - (. Hopefully, the â¬Srenovation⬠will not mean a change in character or a doubling of the prices, as it happened to â¬SJulien⬠a few streets away, but I guess I am dreaming ! Pity, as I used to go to both Chartier & Julien when I was a student in Paris in the 70â¬"s, and these some of the very few places I could afford. It is like no other in Paris.
Menu only in french, staff not helpful, clininess is discussable.
It is true that food is not expensive, but for this price you can get much better in Paris.

Window shield is covered by guides recomendations, but in my humble opinion they are outdated.

If you have some negative cliche about restaurant service in France this is rare place to confirm it.

This is the typical Parisian restaurant for the popular classes. It comes not only with the traditional food but also with all the other cliches: poor service, long queues to get in, noisy... Overall, it is interesting to go there once for the experience and tick a box on your guide book. I would not recommend to cross the city for it though. This is a legendary Parisian eating spot that some savvy friends took me to.

It is rough, ready, cheap and cheerful....and very very French. Restaurant Chartier has a great atmosphere, it has in fact the internal setting of a potentially expensive restaurant but what is does is fast service, simple food and a fun experience.

The waiters play up to the rough and ready atmosphere and even write the order and bill on your tablecloth. Have a chat with your waiter to have the most fun, they should respond as I think they quite like to slightly shock the out of towners (in a playful and friendly way).

The food was pretty basic. So, don't expect a taste sensation but do expect a gastronomic experience.

Only been there once but I would go back. Would actually quite like to hear what you think about it...
