Fine experience! by AlexWoods

Review by AlexWoods

Rating: 4.00
Tags:
I love this place!
Cosy, friendly, it looks and smells exotic and exciting.
The menu is interesting and varied, even for a vegetarian (not me I hasten to add, but the person I went with!)
Having little experience of Moroccan food, I relied on the advice of our waitress who proved to be knowledgeable, charming and very happy to offer her advice (probably used to morons like me, bless her.)
The meze was an excellent way to start. Gives you a little taste of a lot! In truth I could have eaten that all evening!
I had a lamb tagine with almonds and prunes and my partner a stuffed pepper. Both dishes were fragrant, generous and delicious and well complimented by the (presumably) fresh baked flat breads.
Neither of us could face desert, though had we been a little earlier we would have happily spent a couple of hours outside with shisha and tea before tackling the desert menu (or just more of the meze dishes!)
My one criticism of the place is that the service was a little leisurely. Or maybe "unobservant" is a better way of putting it.
Top tips: nip into Threshers, next door, and pick up a couple of bottles of something red and Spanish on your way; start with as many meze dishes as you reckon you can force down (bearing in mind your main course will feed you well!)

Marrakech of Balham by ilovelucy

Review by ilovelucy

Rating: 3.00
Tags:
Having spent xmas 2006 together travelling around Morocco, I decided to take cousin Jacky to Tagine a Moroccan restaurant, which was situated in a truly un-moroccan location opposite Sainsbury's car-park in Balham for her birthday.

Tagine is conveniently placed a stone's throw from the mighty Bedford pub where we had a quick drink beforehand. From the outside it looked inviting and cosy but once we stepped inside it was much more than that - it was as if we had returned to Marrakech. Dimly lit to give atmosphere, the restaurant was decorated in rugs, low authentic tables and chairs and array of lanterns which hung from the ceiling. I was impressed with the way they had turned the space which was essentially a rectangular room, into an interesting area which gave off a great atmosphere. Little touches such as the lovely coal burning fire which we sat beside and the heavy red curtain that cut off the door from the resturant as you walked in was much appreciated. Also the BYO policy was great and we brought a bottle along with us.

We wanted to try everything and so got the meze dishes to start - I think a choice of four was just over £10. Very good especially the merguez sausages. For the mains we could have done with just ordering one main as the plates were huge. We shared the chicken tagine and the couscous special - not sure what it was called but it had a massive lamb shank and a merguez sausage. The food was great homely fare for a cold winter's day. The flavours and the intensity of the spices came together beautifully. I sort of half expected the food to be spicier with more chillis involved (which I am a fan of)but I had to remind myself that it wasn't Indian cuisine. We had to practically roll ourselves out of the restaurant. Lucky the chairs were so low! Overally it was a very good experience - staff were friendly, food was great and filling and the atmosphere was buzzing. Good value for money with the BYO.

Great for a party by Browners

Review by Browners

Rating: 4.00
Tags:
Another cracking restaurant in Balham that isn't too expensive and allows you to bring your own booze. It also helps that there's a Threshers next door.

The first time we visited Tagine it was pissing it down with rain and we were so grateful for the warmth of Tagine that we bought a bottle of wine and settled in for a wonderful meal. Cowie had a perfectly grilled skewer of chicken and I had a delicious lamb tagine which arrived dramatically in a spectacular eartherware pot, just like we'd had in Morroco.

It's a charming place with authenic tiles, friendly staff and delicious food. But it gets even better when you hire it out for a party.

Having been let down by the Paddyfield we arranged for Cowie to have her 25th birthday party here for 50 people and had a tremendous time. They sorted everything out brilliantly clearing all the chairs away and replacing them with Morrocan poofs and low slung tables tucked away in the corners.

They served enormous lamb, chicken, vegetable and fish tagines for everyone which was preceded by some sensational nuggets of merguez sauasage. It was all perfect and for £25 a person, pretty good value.

We finsihed the evening off by dancing to some questionable Morrocan music before stumbling home.
