Authentic Moroccan dishes in a friendly setting by kachika

Review by kachika

Rating: 4.00
Tags:
Zagora has been around for a few years, in Fletchers Walk, which is close to the library. It's not in the nicest passageway, but once you get inside it's lovely.

It's not a fancy classy restaurant, but a friendly, relaxed place.

I have Moroccan family and was hoping the food at Zagoras would be as good as the homecooked stuff. I'm happy to say it was.

My partner and I had the £10 special, which is a starter, main course and a glass of wine.

I had an aubergine salad with bread for my started, which was unusual but very nice. My partner had garlic bread with cheese: not very Moroccan but he was happy!

For the main dish, I had Moroccan style paella with chicken, lamb and prawns. It turned out to have no prawns in it, but was satisfying and had authentic, interesting flavours. A nice generous portion too.

My partner had a chicken Tagine, which was served in the tagine itself. I had a taste of his and it was delicious. The chicken was so tender and juicy and tasted similar to what my Aunty makes.

It was a week night when we visited, and we were the only people eating there, but it had a nice atmosphere all the same. The chairs are very comfortable, and I enjoyed the Arabic pop music.

The staff were friendly and helpful with any extra requests. I'd definitely go back again, perhaps at a weekend when it's busier. You can take your own wine with you, which is an added bonus.

A fun night out by jdmerry

The decor is lovely and really reminiscent of Morocco. I especially love the fact that you aren't really close to the other tables which means it is a great place for a tete a tete! You can talk in privacy without everyone overhearing your conversations and you theirs.

The belly dancer (there at the weekends only I think) really adds to the experience.

The food is to die for, with different kebabs to suit different tastes. I personally enjoy the mixed kebab and would recommend it to anyone. It's a perfect place for a romantic night out.

Cosy surroundings, really good food by Sapphire12

Review by Sapphire12

Rating: 4.00
Tags:
This is a restaurant my partner and I come again and again to - and one I'd happily bring friends to.

The resturant is cosy and comfortable, with red, green and gold decorations, cushion plied seats and low lighting - including very atmospheric traditional Moroccan lamps. There is also a screen at the end of the room playing videos of belly dancing, with music to match. On Saturday nights there is live belly dancing entertainment, which I personally have not yet experienced.

The food is wonderful and comparable to food I've enjoyed in Morocco itself. You must try the Salad Zaalouk starter - Grilled aubergine, coriander, garlic, tomatoes and olive oil in a (£3.90). Its fantastic scooped up with pitta bread, I can't get enough of it! My partner loves the small aromatic chicken pastries - Briouat Poulet (£3.95).

Of the main courses, my favourites have been the chicken kebabs (beautiful marinade, served with tasty rice and salad) and the chicken cous cous - really tasty seasoning, chick peas and well cooked chicken. I would hesitate to recommend the sweet and spicy chicken pie (Pastilla au Poulet) - the first few mouthfuls are wonderful and flavoursome, but it is just to sweet to stomach for an entire main.

My partner recommends the mixed kebabs, and the spicy meatballs tangine with egg, although it could with more seasoning.

You can take your own wine, which helps to keep things cheap, and it's perfectly possibly to eat for £20 for two people.

Tasty food, well cooked and good service.

The restaurant is a little crowded, but has comfortable seating.

At first I wondered why dessert wasn't brought out as soon as the main course was cleared, but then the music got slightly louder and a belly dancer came out. Dessert was served while she was, very skillfully, dancing.

A pleasant evening, to be repeated.
