Review by kspence

Rating: 5.00
Tags:
The Trout Inn is very well known locally and for fans of the television programme as the â¬ÜInspector Morse pubâ¬". This has had a slightly unfortunate effect because the place is generally mobbed at popular times; the road through the village of Wolvercote is narrow and winding and high-walled at best and because of the pubâ¬"s popularity, you run a real risk ⬠either as motorist or pedestrian ⬠of being involved in a road traffic accident when trying to get to, or from, this hostelry. I also seem to remember some foolishness about the pub car-park being located a few tens of metres down on the opposite side of the (narrow and winding) road from the pub, which doesnâ¬"t help the situation. There is good reason for this though ⬠since the pub is situated directly on the banks of the river Thames.

I see from the other reviews this is reputedly a gastro-pub and although I usually pay attention to these things, I havenâ¬"t the slightest recollection of what I ate there when I visited. Five stars still, though, for if nothing else the utter beauty of its setting, which has made me quite forgetful of the usual practicalities of eating out. This isnâ¬"t to detract from the many qualities of this pub of course ⬠which is nicely appointed indoors and out, has a lovely terrace seating area on the river-bank, takes card payments (fortunately, becasue it's not exactly cheap), and does good food and a range of beers and beverages etc. etc. etc. But what ideally youâ¬"ll remember if you go is the sight of the green willows and the lazy river, that wooden footbridge, and if youâ¬"re lucky, the peacocks sitting on it in a gentle, hazy rain...itâ¬"s almost too pretty to be believed, really.

The food is pricey but fine.

One word of caution though - be careful when arranging to meet friends here, as there's always the danger that one of them will go to the similarly-named Perch, which is also on the river but quite a long way away. The pub is situated on the river at Wolvercote and the garden looks out onto the water. The building itself is picturesque and extremely well presented inside and out. For those of you that remember the dark and crowded days of a few years ago, never fear, The Trout has been redecorated in a modern yet rustic way. This atmospheric and cosmopolitan feel is complimented by the exceptional standard of the food. Despite the gastronomic taste of the dishes, portions are still generous. And if you like seafood, the scallops of the day are an absolute must.

As it turns out the high praise was justified.

Situated on the side of a canal, the Trout Inn offers a picturesque setting especially when sitting outside on a warm summer evening. The prices are may be slightly higher than you normally would expect from this type of gastro-pub however after the food arrived I honestly felt as though they were justified. The service was prompt despite the amount of people there and the food itself was presented beautifully but more importantly it tasted fantastic.

I would highly recommend the Trout Inn to anyone who likes good food and a great atmosphere.

I'm pleased to say, however, under the current ownership the Trout is fantastic.

Sitting by the side of the river just down the road from Wolvercote, the setting is just lovely - very picturesque and the peacocks that strut around outside are fascinating to watch (they climb trees...who knew!?). If nothing else, the Trout has to be *the place* in Oxford to sit out with a cold beer on a warm summers evening.

While you're there, however, it's well worth getting a meal in. The menu is varied with a good mix of food, all of which is prepared to a very high standard and with remarkable efficiency for such a large restaurant. The portion sizes are good for a modern gastro-pub and the puddings are just brilliant.

Pricing is on the high side, but you really feel the quality of the food justifies this and I've yet to leave feeling I've received anything but excellent value.
