Review by messydesk

Rating: 2.00
Tags:
I love Marylebone High Street,I know I shouldn't because it's dead wanky and overpriced, but I just can't help myself. I usually find myself working in the area about twice a month so I was really pleased when Eat and Two Veg opened a few years ago.

Eat and Two Very really looks lovely inside and I've gone back and back over the years primarily for that reason. There's cafe tables in the window (often full though), a canteen style table down the middle of the room and booths along the edges, they're all comfortable and the staff never squish you too close to other diners on the canteen table. The design is an odd mixture of American Diner and Art-Deco but, as I say it works really well and is just lovely. It's restful and tasteful, but still interesting and unusual.

Unfortunately, the food is really quite average and is most certainly over-priced. The menu seems pretty wide and interesting when you're choosing from it, but the quality of the cooking is often very poor and the taste can be bland and uninspiring. Another gripe is the speed of the service. All the waiters and waitresses are informed and helpful but there's simply not enough of them, when you finally do get to order, the food takes a long time to arrive, especially considering how underwhelming it often is. Have to admit though, the cocktails are ace.

I think I could forgive Eat and Two Veg the food and just have the vege burger, enjoy the atmosphere and treat it like a snack place if it were not so fearfully expensive. I had a halloumi sandwich there once that cost me eight quid and wasn't even very good. For that, I'll get a sandwich from tesco and drink in the design and atmosphere by sitting on the opposite side of the road and looking in.

My wife is a vegetarian but I am not. We go to vegetarian restarants from time to time and I must admit I sometimes find the food rather bland.

On both of our visits to Eat and Two Veg, the menu was imaginative and diverse, the food was tasty and the service was good and friendly. On the first occasion, I noticed ants crawling on the wooden skirting adjacent to the seating. I mentioned it to the waiter and he apologised profusely and said that management were aware of the problem and trying to sort it out and that the ants should be gone soon.

Our second visit was about 6 months later. All was well with food and service but the ants were still in evidence. I asked a (different) waiter about it again and he said that they were still working on the problem but the ants were proving hard to banish. They may well have sorted it out by now....but I haven't been back to check.

There was only one waiter so it took a while to be served. We picked our order and the tofu curry was gorgeous. The cheeseburger was good but tasted just like meat which not all veggies like - I don't. Bill was £45 for 3, inc 2 desserts (cheesecake was fab). It was a bit expensive but the décor is swish. It has a posh American diner feel.

Too often, being vegetarian means going to Indian or non-European restaurants, or being fobbed off by uninspiring veggie "choices" on standard menus.
Or ending up in a place full of/run by hippies...

There is nothing Hippy-ish about Meat and two veg. The menu is British based but vaguely American themed, with traditional (meat-based) dishes such as shepherd's pie replaced with meat-free ingredients.

I had a fantastic and calorific brunch here with tasty veg sausages and egg fried exactly as requested with some sort of hybrid bubble'n'hash browns, VERY nice.
The atmosphere was nice and lively, youngish, upmarketish, as you'd expect on this upandcoming bit of Marylebone High St. I was reminded of San Fransisco restaurants until I had a coffee, which was definitately of European quality!

Minus a star for the Goats Cheese & Courgette Tart by belinda

Their Goats Cheese & Courgette Tart was so bad that I couldn't eat it. Sloppy half cooked onions & courgettes mixed with a dash of goats cheese that is melted through so that it is totally unrecognizable as cheese. The tart base however was nice, pity they couldn't actually cook the filling in the tart instead of slopping it in after. Then they top of the hot tart with lettuce leaves - my pet hate, tart = HOT, salad = COLD and never the twain shall meet, hot lettuce hmmmm.

But don't let that put you off this place, just stick to the burgers and breakfasts and you can't go wrong. Great juice, great coffee and (usually) great food.

They have a great vegetarian menu which includes a "Veggie Burger and Fries" which is quite delicious. Vegetarian shepherds pie and peas and mash are both favoured dishes with Magellan Lab technicians. Their power fruit juices are fantastic. They do good coffee too. The staff are friendly and efficient and, wonderfully for London, there is quite a lot of space with some excellent booth tables. Also, no canned music which is a real bonus. Despite this, it can be quite noisy.

I had the lasagne and it was delicious, while my friend had the roast squash and was similarly impressed.

The American-style decor is well executed and adds atmosphere rather than take it away and render it soulless. This place is specially recommend if you have veggie friends who always moan on how they have no choice - they will be delighted with the array of food on offer, and even the hardiest meat eater will find the fare enjoyable as well.

Not too bad, for a vegetarian place.

Eat and Two Veg have realised that the secret is often in the sauce. By making really excellent sauces, they seek to compensate for using tofu, quorn or another substitute for meat. And it's not bad. The not chicken satays, for example (lumps of quorn, grilled like chicken satays) are served with a delicious peanut sauce.

In a similar vein, the cocktails from the bar are very good and the Illy cappuccinos are well made.

At the moment, the main courses are pleasant but a bit "samey" - hopefully they will refresh the menu soon.

It is always buzzing and the food is excellent for both vegetarians and lovers of meat. They provide innovative dishes, some of which are very high in protein (and taste) by using meat substitutes. The cocktails are impressive and it is a great place to meet friends to share a couple of starters and have drinks.

Try the Crispy Aromatic Luck and the Schnitzel - my two favourite dishes on the menu.

Unfortunately, the Westbourne Grove branch closed not long after opening - but don't let that put you off coming here.
