At Newark I never got to the Singapore Airlines lounge and would be interested to know how it compares.

In the USA I was using airmiles for a flight to and from London on Virgin Atlantic and there was a three hour delay at Newark and the airline gave me a voucher for their lounge.

Colourful. Purple paint. Bookshelves and curved sculptures. A soothing circular window in wall. Pretty paintings. Bar seats for those who like to perch and low armchairs for those who want to flop back. And a little booth where a couple can sit on a snug, cosy, private two-seater settee and watch a film without disturbing others.

The Clubhouse had a the bar stool area where crackers were black and orange. Then a hot buffet. When I sat down soup was brought in teeny cups, Seems to be the latest thing, serving soup in a cup - had that in a coffee shop cum restaurant. The soup was either pumpkin or parsnip, thick and white with teeny lumps of tasty, sweet vegetable rewarding you at the end, like a lucky dip at a party.

Smartly dressed, svelte girls came round offering champagne or drinks. With regular refills. Not refills, fresh glass every time.

Then a dessert trolley. Refreshing fruit, as well as tempting chocolate or pecan nut tart. Their overload of sugar was offset by mint and a few pieces of colourful fruit. I have some great photos of the food.

My only complaint is that staff removed the cheese and biscuits from the buffet before check-in. So I didn't get a chance to go back for a last snack before my flight.

Had a wonderful time at Newark airport, starting with the airport shops, where I bought a lovely coral red pendant in the jewellery bar, then into the airside Virgin Atlantic special lounge, best lounge of any I've tried.

I am a frequent flyer associate (courtesy of family member) with Singapore Airlines and have used their lounges all over the world, mostly Heathrow and Changi. Bright and clean looking.

Bedroom
A large suite with a kingsize bed and comfy pillows and a light but warm blanket under the light duvet.

Settee and armchair in second room with large alcove. One person told me that he would have preferred the sitting area to have a curtain or sliding door, and he would have liked a double door for privacy. Two doors gives protection from sounds and means nobody bursts in - they have to go through two doors, and the door does not open exposing those in the bed to the gaze of passers by.

My comments on the feedback form were:
I would prefer a warmer colour scheme, some red or orange or pink, perhaps in the painting and a real or artificial flower, even one fake rose or tulip - they are quite pretty. Maybe a sliding shutter over two alternative views, photographs, posters or paintings in different colours, or even four, like the Japanese seasonal flower and art arrangements, such as yellow daffodils, or pink roses, or orange and green autumn leaves, and holly with red berries in snow. The staff could change the pictures according to the season, or allow the tourist to change the colour scheme to suit himself or herself. Maybe I should go into business doing this.

At breakfast I know that they specify what time breakfast ends, but if you are sitting in the breakfast lounge with plates, the person clearing away breakfast should give you five minutes warning. I was lingering over my breakfast and had not got around to the waffle. I saw the lady emptying the batter machine and rushed over and asked if I could have a cupful of batter.

She offered to make me the waffle. That was very sweet of her. But I'd have preferred the warning.

Otherwise very good.

Suite with Jacuzzi
Outlook - car park and trees and distant motorway. I kept the curtains drawn.
Decor - pictures of orchids.

Colour scheme - bland.
Cleanliness - perfect. Spotless taps, basins, carpets, corners, surfaces.
Air con - blowing under window and useful for drying clothes but not too loud.
Hair dryer - also useful for drying clothes and hair.
Toiletries - everything except bubble bath which might make the Jacuzzi overflow.

Food
Breakfast
Serve yourself in the sunken lounge at the back of the reception hall. High or low tables.
Cereals. Fruit salad. Yogurt in small pots.
Coffee and decaff urns. Muffins.
Waffles you make by filling a cup with batter and pouring it onto the waffle maker. You close the wafflemaker which times itself two minutes. Add butter and syrup. That was fun on the first day, and the best feature.

Service
Front desk staff were helpful. The manager phoned a local shop to ask if they stocked a converter for my British phone charger which needed an American plug. When the shop said they didn't have it, that saved me a wasted journey.

I asked if they had a plug I could borrow and they went to their 'lost' box and found several chargers, one of which was a Nokia. (Apparently they have to keep lost items about four months, but most people don't reclaim lost chargers because a new charger is not much more expensive than the price of postage.)

Like the pioneering Holiday Inns, they have a card saying that they can provide certain items on demand. They could not find a deodorant but they had toothbrush and toothpaste - Colgate on a flat sachet, and a razor.

Food
The room also had a microwave oven. I heated leftovers from the enormous lunch at Harold's New York Restaurant and Deli.

If you wanted supper, next door was a branch of a chain called Red Lobster. Nearby we had passed Legal Seafood. Apparently that's not a joke but a serious matter because some kind of fishing is illegal.

The lounge hall had two internet machines, one attached to a printer which enabled me to check into Newark airport and print my boarding pass.

I was also able to print out a greetings card to reciprocate one I was given.

A large screen TV was in the lounge and somebody watched a film in Spanish.

The reception staff were bilingual, speaking Spanish to others and perfect American English to me.

I got a late checkout until 2 pm.

An American advised me that you should leave a tip for the person who services your bedroom. (Like in the UK back in the 1950s.)

All in all fond memories. Made me want to install a Jacuzzi in my home. Jacuzzi did not take long to fill.

I slept soundly. I heard people in other rooms - water in pipes and doors I think, in the morning which helped me get up in time for breakfast.

The gym had gym equipment but no sauna nor spa bath. But then I had that lovely spa bath in my room.

More information from:
comfortinnparamus.com

On the motorway.
