The owners were pleasant enough, moreso over the phone than in person, but far more standoffish than we are used to at a B&B. Their son, who we saw as we went to breakfast, was also very reserved and never smiled or even glanced at any of the guests. Perhaps the B&B is too much of a disruption for him.

The room was adequate but nothing special ⬠it fronted on a busy road but the traffic wasnâ¬"t too noisy. The en-suite was tiny, as if it used to be a cupboard, and not very clean. The shower was uncomfortable, and again, not very clean.

There seemed to be a lot of rules here. We had to be back by a certain time, as we werenâ¬"t allowed to take our key and needed to return before the last person went to bed. The parking was also very regulated, the cars having to be arranged behind the gates in order of who was leaving first.

The walk into York itself was longer than we had thought, which wasnâ¬"t a problem for us as we are active, but for those who have difficulty or donâ¬"t like walking, this B&B isnâ¬"t that conveniently placed.

We were glad that we only had a one-night stay here and certainly would never stay at this B&B again or recommend it to anyone.
My friend and I stayed here for one night in an en-suite twin on our way to a holiday further north. Staff seemed friendly apart from one who obviously did not know how to smile. Saying that, the rest of the staff were only too willing to help if I had a question.
The rooms were very clean and well maintained. I loved the toilet / shower area. Very modern and bright. Could of maybes of done with a demister in there for when the shower is in use. The thing on the wall above the sink seemed to be connected to the aircon and didnt demist anything.
The breakfast was very nice. For an extra 4.50 gbp per person per day you could get a full english breakfast which consists of 5 items. Doesnt sound much? Well we had 2 of each, i.e, sausage, bacon, scrambled egg, beans, 2 hash browns. On top of this you could still get your cerial, toast, juice, tea / coffee, fruit. I'm a big eater, and I was stuffed whenever I left there.
Hotel is situated within 10 mins walk from the train station and a nice short walk from the town center.
I would stay again for sure.Stayed for 2 nights. We would highly recommend this for families as the facilities are very good. Two interconnecting rooms are available for families with a private bathroom. At breakfast the table had been made up with booster seat and a cup, dish and spoon, ready for our little one. These touches made us feel very welcome.

The breakfasts are lovely with a good selection to choose from. The rooms are very clean and well-maintained. The location was good. It didn't take too long to walk to the main centre of York. The prices were good value. The decor was pleasant. The bed was comfortable. The breakfast was lovely. There was a choice of traditional english or continental. There was fresh fruit available. The breakfast room was in a conservatory with plenty of light. Tea and coffee was provided in the room we stayed in. There was plenty of wardrobe space. The owner was friendly and polite. This place had a relaxing feel to it. There was only one downfall though. The floorboards in the room above us were very creaky and someone moving round upstairs woke us ap about 6 -6.30 am. I have a sneaky suspicion this was the owner herself. There was also the sound of someone using a hairdryer coming from above us too. I would come back here but I would have to bring some earplugs in order not to get woken up early in the morning.I had a really nice stay here. The location was good. From the outside (and sat in the sun) this looks a great place, the aspect is on one of yorks little streets with great people watching potential and behind sits the restaurant and hotel in all its rather glamorous glory. But appearances can be deceptive.

The bar is located (hard to find) around to the left and down underground beneath the main hotel front. Do not be fooled when you first feast your eyes on the exteria, you do not get to go anywhere near the 'posh' part. Instead you arrive in a more coven and cavernous dark setting. This was probably the wine cellar to the much grander hotel back in the day. Today its home for the usual lager and beer selections and with even little effort put into the wine menu. Which is so sad (and ironic) when you consider that its such a perfect setting for a glass of something pleasant and a sit in the sun.

Instead this has the reputation of being loud and lary at night with scores of students and stag staggering lad louts who have sat and drunk in the sun all day and continue well into the night.

Take away the louts, put in a nice bar area (preferably with daylight) and this place would be one of the best bars in york. Instead it's rather dark, dingy and disapointing.

Forget about food here. It's all microwaved typical and uninspired bar burgers. Ironic when you consider a Gourmet Burger Kitchen has opened up next door.

The Judges Lodgings is deceptively difficult to review. We told the owners that we had a leak in our sink the day after our wedding, more or less when we asked for our breakfast to be delivered to us in bed as one of us was ill. We told them about the sink then which clearly made loads of water mess all over the bathroom floor. The daughter of the owner went to put the breakfast tray on the bed until the mother being one of the owners shouted at her saying "not on the bed" abruptly and to say that they wouldn't change the be linen afterwards anyway. Very strange!

This was a shambles because the owners are clearly homophobic after telling us just being married in York a day earlier for them to get out of their room, one of the owners banged aggressively and shouted at them to get out of their room. One of the owners stated he needed the plumber (his nephew) to get in and sort out the leak not asking their permission before hand but a simple note stating to be out by 12pm. This was not convenient as one of us was ill so it meant that the owners lost 50 quid apparently but then when being more or less forced out and shouted at to get out, we were going to be charged 5 quid for the plumbing when in fact the room wasn't viable to stay in then if there was a faulty unit. I have never in my time being asked to pay for something in a hotel or a B&B for something that is down to the owners to keep it clean, tidy and comfortable as possible. There was also a Rentokil box behind our bed which again assumes there has been a vermin or insect problem in the past, this again did not amuse me. When I read other reviews I can understand why there other people stating the have been bitten by fleas, etc. Us being two girls were threatened, intimidated and verbally abused by this old fashioned arrogant brute that we then had to be picked up by my father to which he was not amused by all of what happened & he is also disabled. He also taped their comments as the attitude from them was disgusting saying, that we were the worst kind of people the have had stayed there. Worst kind of people, this is again a hate crime! For people who don't know what a hate crime is, look it up.

When you get comments from the owners like "well what do you expect from the likes of those people", and that "You's are the worst kind of people I've ever had stay here", it begs to belief whether or not the owners know that they are living in 2008, not 1958. This is a B&B where old fashioned people would probably be welcomed to stay as well as straight people but for gay young people, you don't have a chance. A full story will be made publicly aware very soon, in most national and local newspapers as soon as the couple have secured a deal. As York is starting to slowly become a gay scene, I urge a lot of people to be made publicly aware that this B&B to be shunned & to be protested against as they very narrow minded & arrogant. After picking up our cake at an inn, who again the owners are gay there; they have made sure they make this publicly aware to others in the future, especially tourists. Well done Goldsmiths, you've put your foot in it now haven't you?

If there is anyone out there who believes has had the same kind of problem or any dispute with this B&B, I urge you all to review & slate this place as the tourist boards are already getting their letters in the post and email. We have stated our story to the national papers and local papers.
B&B ⬠Goldsmithâ¬"s, 18 Longfield Terrace, Bootham, York, YO30 7DJ

Before reading this, this review is not threatening but to tell the truth in order what we aim to get out of this, no violent criminal activity, definitely not hearsay as we have evidence on tape, this content is relevant to tourists as some may have the same lifestyle as the couple below, also not forgetting that York has a bit of a gay scene.

We made our stay there one weekend when we were due to get married in York, the whole adventure was great but until we were due to leave one day before hand where the owners Susan & George made very un-savory snide remarks towards
us once they knew we were gay! When one of the owners knew we were getting flowers, she didn't expect it would be for us so it was after that we started to get the really odd and negative behavior which clearly states the owners being homophobic.
