Hi guys,

I thought i'd introduce myself since we're new in town. My name's simon and myself and my best mate started Xing straight out of uni as a way of improving the standard of catering on campus, whilst curing a few hangovers in the process.

We have a great following at our Hull uni bar and also do a lot of work promoting healthy eating in schools for the NHS and LEA's as we found that smoothies are a great way of getting kids to eat fruit, even the most hardened of fruit dodger! it's been really hard work but we think its a worthy cause considering the state of our public health.

I hope you will pop in and say hello to myself and the rest of the gang and join us on our quest to ween kids off these horrible milk, ice cream and chocolate bar shakes that seem to be popping up everywhere.

We popped in here last Saturday afternoon, as we were in York for the day, and bought several packs of Masham, some pieces of cheese and some choc biscuits. Very nice and not cheap - the till showed a total just under Â£30.

what a fantastic find. Whilst normally going into delis and coming out very dissapointed this is an exception indeed. Amazing smell of a real food shop with everything you could wish for. I bought an assortment of 'on tap' balsamics and oils including a 100 year old balsamic of modena at a bargain price. I have never had so many quality cheese tasters with this much enthusiasm before.I found products here that I would not expect to find outside of Harrods food hall, or on the continent. The interior is a work of art, capturing the best of a true deli and needless to say I will be back again and again.what a fantastic find. Olio & Farina have opened their 10th store in York and the portents are good.

The York shop is divided neatly into two distinct sections - eat in and take away. There is a spotless Italian cafe that serves effortlessly good Espresso and assorted other beverages and pastries and the shop complements this well.

There is a good selection of jars and bottles of own brand high quality spreads, pates, pastas, plus wines (including Primitivo - my current favourite and available at KoKo Bar) and fresh produce in a bijous fridge. You can taste the Olive Oils from lovely terracota dispensers before you buy.

My two personal favourites were their Black Olive and Sundried Tomato PÃ¢tÃ© - wonderfully clean and fresh lacking that dreaded ingredient Sodium Chloride that so corrupts the taste. The other was their top of the range Olive Oil "Occhipinti Pantarei" which at Â£13.49 for 250ml seems a little steep. That is to most people who don't have an addiction to Manni Olive oil and import this most precious of gems from Tuscany (www.manni.biz).

Manni Olive Oil appeared in an article on 100 things to try before you die and I'd be hard pressed to disagree. It is quite sublime - as pure as fruit juice with a peppery aftertaste - this ÃSber Extra Virgin Olive Oil comes from trees that are over 700 years old and shower their heritage onto the palate like little else.

That said, this little upstart from Sicily ran the magisterial Manni mighty close - there was a discernable difference but not as much as one would think for something a 5th of the price.

This Genoa based enterprise aims to bring the best and purest of Italian produce to the consumer and their business concept is based on the 3 revenue streams of Corporate Gifts, Internet Sales and the expanding Retail chain which includes franchises. York is a most welcome addition...

Brilliant shop for bargains. You have Â£1 or Â£2 or Â£3 choices and if you have a big freezer then fill it here. Yes, stock up for Xmas at a fraction of the cost! It is a shop with a wide choice so you are not limited to say one brand, we enjoy there version of Magnum ice creams on a stick, strawberry cheese cake, apple pie ice cream and lots of big size vegatables and lamb mince at reasonable prices. yes, it is a place to shop for those partiers because for Â£5 you can buy a party pack with pork pies, sausage rolls and others savories. Worth a look!

A good place in the credit crunch to gain groceries with low prices and quality. We are amazed at their cocktail sausage rolls with such taste of herbs and spices that other supermarkets would sell for Â£3.99 they sell for Â£1.59. Same with cans and sauces, it may not be your choice, but like most shops you can buy some good DIY stuff reasonable. Food is good value, soaps and household materials are very reasonable and the staff are very "Swedishly sincere", friendly and helpful. At present there is a free stuffed dog if you collect 40 stamps. You get a stamp for each Â£5 spent, so a free dog with every Â£200 of groceries, which in today's shopping soon adds up, hence nice stuffed dog for all the ladies, my wife loves em!

I really like this shop. It is like a big general store which smells fabulous. We always shop in there when I am visiting my father in Kirbymoorside. Everything in this place is free range and organic. They use the minimum of packaging and know where everything has been sourced.

Yes, it is very trendy these days but this store and the others have been around for a long time supplying really high quality goods. They now have an online store on their website plus other shops around the area.

They sell everything from the usual fruit and veg and organic wines to gifts, soft drinks, homewares and household cleaning items.I really like this shop. Bought fudge from them online. 6 pieces at Â£25.00
It was sloppy, unset, didnt hold its shape, and also there was a 2 inch thick black hair in it!!! Yuck.

So I called to complain and they promised a refund which 4 weeks ago and it hasnt been done. I called again and asked for the refund and they sent me 6 more pieces of unset fudge. Told them first time I didnt want replacement as they agreed to refund.
It is really awful, it tastes like sickly icing I dont think I will ever be able to eat fudge again.

Better fudge can be bought more cheaply from Fortnum and Mason or Harrods.

If I could have, I would have given no stars.

As if Thorntons chocolate isn,t tasty enough, The shop at the Designer Outlet sells all the goodies at a discount!! You must try the misshapes, brilliant value for money and a surprise every time. Although you run the risk of getting a big bag of something you don't like, you can always pass them on as a 'gift'!
The cafe is definitely a must visit. Situated in one half of the shop, the aroma of chocolate is constant and their hot chocolate is divine. A yummy selection of cakes and you are in chocolate heaven.
If you visit before Christmas you can purchase small(not too small) bags of chocolate for Â£2 or so. These are great stocking fillers. After 'shopping around' (ho!ho!) for the best supermarket, I have firmly decided on Sainsbury's. Yes Asda and Tesco can be cheaper, but not by much anymore and the quality of fresh stuff is a lot better at Sainsbury's.

The Monk's Cross branch is a great supermarket. It has its own entrance from the Monk's Cross roundabout, so you don't get snarled up with the other shoppers and a huge car park. Inside the store it has a nice cosy feel to it - I don't mean that it's small and cramped, but personally I prefer it to the overlit cavernous superstores. This branch stocks the TU clothing range and lots of electricals (always manage to lose my other half to the enormous flat screen tvs!), homewares and books/cds/games/dvds too. There is a salad bar, hot food counter, butcher and deli at the back of the store - and there are lots of pre-cut deli cheeses and meats available nicely displayed in baskets if you don't fancy queuing for service.

There are loads of tills and you never seem to have to queue for very long (but I do avoid weekend shopping). There is also a coffee shop.

this has to be the worst supermarket ever. They are constantly moving the aisles around so you can't find what you want quickly. There are never enough staff at the checkouts. Getting a space at the parent and child parking is a nightmare as not enough spaces. The staff that there do try to be helpful but there aren't enough of them to do a good job. The clothes department never seem to have sufficient sizes about 14 so if you like something its tough. This is a gem of a shop just of the market in York. The aromas of the cheeses hit you as you walking the shop. There is a stunning collection of cheese both British and continental. They also offer a great selection of cooked meats and hams. These is a real place to indulge in treat shopping or if you are having a dinner party putting together your cheese board as not only do they have the cheese but they have various different biscuits to go with them. They also have various good quality dry food ingredients. But my husband would say the best thing they do is their sandwiches which are in my opinion the best take out sandwiches in York all hand prepared in front of you hence the long queues!This is a gem of a shop just of the market in York. At Christmas its best to order your stocking fillers of teddy bears and Santa's as these seem to fly of the shelf and having one year made the mistake of not ordering one I have done so in the future. Well I never thought I would add my praises here, but I visited it this morning and the foods and staff were magnificant. Just visit and have a look at the choice of oriental foods for us all to try.

Say "Ni Hao" (sounds like Knee-How) and say "Hello" to the staff who really appreciate a chat with anyone who tries to speak chinese, or more correctly Mandarin.

I ask how much does it cost in Mandarin "zhe ge jia zhi duo shao" and they spoke back in English, so no need to learn chinese. Why not ngive them a try and you can get green tea direct from China and who knows you may even meet an Olympic champion? The staff are "Champions" to me. Wor hur ta hao pan yeo. Xiexie. Whittards of Chelsea ia a very well-known brand and sells some very good quality items. The few times I have been in there it has taken a lot of will-power not to buy their pretty little tea pots and cups and saucers!

They also sell loose tea and ground coffee, which I have not tried, but it is very well packaged and would make a lovely present for someone.

However, Betty's is just down the street, and sells some of the nicest loose teas and coffees I have ever tried. It is all processed and packaged locally in Harrogate, and it is a great excuse to buy some of their great cakes! They also do very nice gift sets for christmas etc, very nice to take home to remember your trip to the tea rooms!

The branch of Thorntons is exactly what you would expect, it is the same as all of the others!

They sell a wide range of chocolates, all very nicely packaged and good for gifts, especailly the personalised things, that you can have your loved-ones name written on. The diabetic options are also good,

It gets incredibly busy, especially if you happen to be in there at a weekend or near christmas! The products are good, but not spectacular, and I think are a little bit over priced for what is pretty basic milk chocolate in a nice box.
