Nicola used to zoom around York in a smart car with an espresso machine in the back, but now she's decided to settle down in Barker Tower, just under Lendal Bridge.

She does great coffee (the best I've had in York), home made cakes and biccies, bacon butties, bagels from Via Vecchia (the mystery bakers on The Shambles) and ice cream in case you're still not full.

Lucia's has had a few months to 'bed-into' the York scene since opening. There's a modicom of Mediterranean flair here - the staff are friendly and quick to respond, once you've caught their eye.

The crucial test: Can they mix a decent mojito? In short, No. BUT they were the cheapest drinks in Swinegate (Â£3.50) - on the downside they tasted cheap. But when you can buy by the jug load everyone seemed happy enough.

The wine list looks more promising - but we were so disappointed by the lack of a decent cocktail concoction that we choose to leave these alone on this occasion.

Food speedily appears. And smells divine. Points for ambundance of fresh salad and colourful display on the plate. Less points for real authentic Spanish flavour - which , after all, is what you WANT from a Spanish restaurant.

In short a nice attempt. Lucia's aim seems to be to keep things simple and rely on through-put of people, rather than spending time with diners. A capital 'P' for potential. Really good authentic food of the orient at affordable prices. Not a posh restaurant but great food with zero pretense located right in the city centre. Friendly staff and great service. Bit of a fav with students and vast amount of not that cheap booze. Food - don't go there - this is a big plus for public access to information collected by public officials - food hygiene inspection undertake by local authorities like York is public and one the web - search for 'scoresonthedoors'.

So the evil needs to put its eye on basic hygiene as it gets a big fat 0 out of 5 on this score - Yes thats a O - in what is described as 'about the standards of food hygiene and compliance with the law in food premises' ......well would you eat there?

i have eaten in nearly every restaurant in york and i have found this to be the best place to eat if you want the food to be at a great standard everytime you eat. i hate it when you go somewhere really nice, then the next time you go its not as good. if i want to go for a meal that i know is nice, then i always go here.

If you are harking for a bit of history in our historical city, then join the queues for Betty's; you'll be able to sample all that was bad about British Tea Rooms from around the early '70s; rude staff, tired decor and over rated over priced food. On the other hand, if you're after a good cup of coffee with pleasant service without the standing around to get in then go to one of the many good quality cafÃ©s that have opened since this relic. To say Betty's is trading on the past would be an understatment.

We went along recently when friends visited and wanted to do the tourist thing. The waitress could have passed for one from the old communist eastern block she was that rude. The scones were as dry as straw and the order didn't arrive all at the same time. To cap it all, my wife scalded her fingers when handed her plate which was (unexpectedly for a plate containing a scone) red hot. Did Comrade Waitress apologise, don't be daft.

A charming stop on our weekend away- well-priced, homemade soups, tasty and interesting paninis and a friendly feel.

The place was pretty busy, but service was good and all the produce was very reasonably priced and fresh. Quick, light and carefully prepared meals.

This must be one of the smallest cafes around. We visit every time we go to York which is unfortunately only once every two months or so. New owners have greatly improved the decor and have improved even on the previous high standard of food and drink.

On our last visit I had soup and my wife had a sandwich. Both were excellent. Not the cheapest place around but top quality and good value.

Well worth a vist even if you only want a mug of hot chocolate which is the best I have ever had!This must be one of the smallest cafes around. Great for a atakeaway snadwich or to sit in and eat too. Also do catering service, they catered for a party for me and the price was great and the food absolotely spot on. I recently discovered this little coffee house tucked away on Skeldergate Bridge. It is just outside the city centre but it is definately worth a little walk. It is all Belgian themed (I think the owner is from Belgium so no wonder everything looks pretty authentic!)

They do amazing hot drinks (especially the hot chocolate where you can stir in your own chocolate pieces, simple and brilliant!) and for the beer lovers a nice selection of Belgian beers. Foodwise, I had a savoury pancake which was the best I ever had; not greasy, nice filling (spinach and blue cheese for me) and beautiful presented with a little side salad.
