what a great little find! Just a short walk from the main shops in reading is this cosy and chilled little place. Local artists contribute to the regularly changing exhibitions, and there are always plenty of friendly faces here. Great atmosphere, great fair trade coffee, a great independent business full of character.what a great little find! This Costa, I suppose, is much like any other Costa coffee around. All serving Italian coffee, all trying to get you to have a grande, when all youâ¬"re really after is a regular. And the same level of customer service that most coffee chains supply, nil! However, the good thing about this place is itâ¬"s large, with plenty of space around the tables, and thatâ¬"s why it seems to have become the place for mumâ¬"s to meet other mumâ¬"s with their children in tow! Itâ¬"s always very busy and despite the number of pushchairs ever present doesnâ¬"t seem to have too many screaming children..... but be warned..... if you really donâ¬"t like young children, you might prefer to take your coffee away!This Costa, I suppose, is much like any other Costa coffee around. Located next door to the Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) shop which sells fairtrade goods, the Global cafe also shares its ethical standards.

The Global cafe serves an excellent array of beers, and I highly recommend the apple juice made by a local supplier.

They also serve food and I recommend the Ethiopian food served in the evenings â¬ particularly Thursdays when they serve an all you can eat buffet for Â£8.50. The friendly staff were helpful in suggesting dishes, combinations and general help for sampling Ethiopian food (a cuisine Iâ¬"d not tried before).

The whole ethical and green vibe is sustained throughout the cafeâ¬ even some of the food is grown on the roof garden.

This cafe, right at the edge of the University campus, serves most notably tea, coffee, and all day breakfasts.

The all day breakfasts are particularly worth looking at. They offer baguettes with bacon, egg, and mushrooms, (or other fillings) or a conventional full English breakfast. For the very hungry, they also serve a Jumbo breakfast which comes with chips and extra slices of bacon and sausages. All for about Â£6. There is also a variety of other hot food on offer, including jacket potatoes.

This cafe can get quite busy at lunchtime especially when the students are about so be there early to grab a table.

Once or twice Iâ¬"ve had incorrect meals arrive from the kitchen but these mistakes have been speedily rectified.

Picnic is an oasis amongst the larger chain cafes in Reading. The quality of the coffee is excellent. Picnic has a blackboard on which patrons can mark in chalk where in Reading serves the best coffee. Needless to say Picnic is winning by a mile!

Small and cosy, picnic has about 7 tables inside (all multicoloured) and a couple of window benches. There are a further 4 tables outside with an awning to protect against the British weather.

Picnic also serves delicious homemade food, an array of cakes and a luch menu. This includes salad boxes â¬ I recently had the Greek salad box (feta, olives, salad and cous cous), delicious.

The tea and coffee cost slightly less than other nearby chains although the quantities are smaller too.

There is ample reading material about â¬ newspapers but also books to suit the quirky and slightly retro feel of picnic â¬ I lost half an hour to a 70â¬"s British Cookery book.

The Bridge cafe has been in Reading for years, it sits on the outskirts of town so it feels like you are almost in the countryside by the time you get to it. It is an old fashioned looking cafÃ© that seems to have not changed for a long time. It always seems to be busy which is surprising as it faces a very nice modern pub and restaurant. I think the reason this cafe keeps going is the fact it serves very large potions of good basic food at a good price.
