To avoid confusion, it should be emphaised this venue is now know as the 02 academy, Oxford (formerly also Carling Academy, Oxford) and is not in central Oxford but a short way out of town.

I gather the place is primarily used as a venue for gigs. On yet another Oxford based hen party, I brought the hens here on a Saturday night as the bride and her party quite liked alternative and wished to avoid the typical dance/towny type places.

They played a good few classic rock and metal floor fillers, but toward the end played stuff we really didn't know and were refused our requests on the grounds that they were too old for our crowd, though I'll admit I did feel like an oldie and I'm only 26...

Prices for everything were reasonable. People were relatively friendly. I remember Imperial Night Club... well that was a bad.
Now, instead of Imperial Night Club, there is OX1 Lounge. Sounds stylish, but think again. If Imperial was bad.. this one is really bad. I mean it.
Went in there and it was not even half full. There is no atmosphere what so ever. Rough looking individuals standing in quartet groups in the corners, as if they are dealing something. Needless to say that none of them spoke english. I thought that I have steped from cultural Oxford into a club somewhere in Eastern Europe and shabby, half-done, budget decor does not help. There is no sense of style in decor, everything seems to be random. Service was slow, unattentive and rude. Doorstaff looked bored and unwelcoming. I do not recommend this place to anybody at all, unless you are a russian gangstar.

Lava & Ignite - Not the best by darwingirl

Larger then the front would have you believe, I went to Lava and Ignite on a Saturday night as one of about 20 hens. In Oxford town centre, and in very close vicinity to a lot of other clubs and bars, this one was chosen for having the shortest queue and appearing to be the least rowdy.

Once past the dinghy lobby, there are 3 rooms playing dodgy cheese, dance/house and rnb/hip hop blend with a few places with comfy chairs, tables and sofas. The place was filled with a combination of the very young with a few more mature clubgoers smattered mainly in the dance/hip hop room.

To me, most rooms were quite dark and badly decorated with the exception of the dance room which I liked. However, I really did not care for the chosen tracks or how they were mixed. FLoor fillers seemed followed by more obscure tracks frequently. I felt they flowed badly.

Drinks not on offer were expensive, especially for out of London.

Staff, espeically front-of-house, were friendly and helpful.

Overall I found the place tacky and a touch chavvy. Not my cup of tea at all. The Park End Club Ltd - Town and Gown by kranti

Rating: 1.00The club is based on the Park End Street from which it takes its name. Infamous in the city, it is one of the venues where drunken town meet drunken gown.

As part of a large stag party we descended on Park End recently to relive the student days of the groom in Oxford. With the stories we had heard the club had much to live up to. With three dancefloors and many bars there should have been something for everyone. It is not quite the case though. Cheesy music on each floor, dated decor and the town's clientele, the night was better for the drink. I've been to The Bridge a few times, but I have no clue what kind of music they play there because apparently it's The Bridge to Alcoholic-Blackout-Shire, population me. Seriously. The juice here tastes weird, so just stick to beer and maybe soda-based cocktails. Drink vodka and red bull if you want enough inebriation to think of bad ideas and still have plenty of energy to turn those into bad ideas into terrible decisions with awful consequences. I think I lost my shoes here once so I just rolled up my trousers and waded home in the river. I've been to The Bridge a few times, but I have no clue what kind of music they play there because apparently it's The Bridge to Alcoholic-Blackout-Shire, population me. Seriously.
