This pub has changed in the last year. More welcoming atmosphere and great staff. let go of the dead wood but kept the good ones. fantastic food, as the chefs have changed, had a sea bass last night and it was sublime. Great drinking pub as well with event nights. You could quite happily spend a weekend in there, instead of city. Especially as they open till 1am. best around, please try it.This pub has changed in the last year. Rating: 1.00Went there with a party of 8 adults and two children on Mother Day for Sunday Lunch. Were kept waiting nearly an hour for our food which finally arrived after complaining. The food was inedible, five of us had roast beef which was impossible to cut, it was like old shoe leather the three small roast potatoes were like burnt, shrivelled, walnuts and the two new potatoes were bad
we all left most of our food and went. Lots of other people were complaining and leaving. Staff were totally disinterested. Wow, what a great place to eat, drink & relax. Franks Bar is now one of my favourite venues. They serve great food, reasonably priced, with a really diverse and interesting menu (which seems to change on a regular basis). The service is great, and the staff chatty and welcoming.
It's a great place to go for Sunday Brunch (the blueberry pancakes are my favourite), and they even show films on a Sunday afternoon out the back. Too bad it's closed on Mondays.

Pros I have visited the Marsh Harrier in Norwich twice. On my first visit I was attracted by the beautiful building and traditional feel of the pub. I was also amazed by how many tables and people the venue could cater for. However the food and service certainly doesn't live upto anywhere near the standard of the building!!

Cons My mind of not returning to the pub was certainly made up when on my second visit when my food was served on a plate that had not been washed. You could feel the grease and see the finger prints around the edge of the plate! There was food stuck to the edges of the plate and it was just dirty in general. Another thing that puts me off the pub is how the cutlery is kept in a pot in the middle of the table. How do you know how long it has been there and who has touched it and put it back before you eat off it!! Also the way that the sauces are served I find incredibly rude. The waitress stands there and waits until you have finished taking the sauces. This all sounds fine but you feel rushed and if you would like any more once you have started eating your meal you can't get any. The Wild Man provides a comfortable, open atmosphere for all to enjoy. Being centrally located you can expect a full variety of people to be there and lovely food during the day. This is a pub where strangers and philosophers are welcomed and anybody can expect a quiet, friendly drink.
Later on in the evenings it can get quite busy due to the late license, but this is a reflection of the quality of service and security of the premises as there is rarely any antisocial behaviour from the clients.
With the recent free WiFi (this review is, in fact, being written inside the pub) the Wild Man makes for a comfortable drink during the day and a fun night out.The Wild Man provides a comfortable, open atmosphere for all to enjoy. The Iron Duke is a great traditional pub that cater for real ale drinkers as well as your regular lager lovers. They have a small room with gravity ales and a wide selection to choose from. Every year they also have a mini beer festival all of their own, and if you like ale then it's something that really shouldn't be missed.

The pub itself is very spacious with many tables and a small outside area for those of you who like to smoke. It can get quite busy at times but finding a seat has never been a major problem.

I have been in on a couple of occasions when a small folk medley has been going on, not something you see too often in the city... Tuesdays I think they come down, but don't quote me on that.

The pub has a little bit of history too as they unearthed a small WW2 hideout. I'm not sure on it's exact details but they have the newspaper clipping framed above it so I think you should go and check it out yourself.

Nice and friendly staff too, I have always been served in a timely manner.

One last note, if you have an old book you will never read again bring it down to the pub, they have a book swap where you can literally swap it for another one from the shelf. I believe it is Norwich's smallest pub, but don't hold me to that if you know otherwise. It consists of a few small rooms with just a couple of tables in each, and a small bar. It feels really cosy and quaint, and was actually where I went for my first date with who is now my husband.

The drinks are what you'd expect and of a reasonable price for a city centre, and the bar menu is nothing spectacular but all the food we've eaten here has been good.

It has a great location, being just out of the city centre and in the shadow of the cathedral. It is situated on a popular riverside walk through Norwich, so is definately worth having a pit stop here. If the weather is fine it is nice just to sit outside with a drink and take the pleasant surroundings in.This is a wonderful place to stop for a drink or a bar meal.

I was realy impresed with the menu, nobody could say they didn't have much to choose from.

The food did take a little while to arive but this is expected if you go anywhere on a Sunday, and we were in quite a large party.

The food when it did arrive was great. The portions were quite large though, so would have liked a smaller portion with a smaller price.

Children were welcome and well catered for, although we weren't offered anything to entertain them while we waited. Luckily we had taken our own emergency supplies.

Was far too full for desert, so can't comment on these.

All in all we had a very enjoyable sunday lunch here.We visited here on a sunday lunchtime so was quite busy.

However that is not to say the Wildebeest was bad, I went here for lunch, so i can't ideally compare to the dinner, which i would hope would b slightly better. The courses were pleasant though nothing worth praising about, it was difficult to assess many of the mains as they seemed to b swamped in their sauces, but nevertheless it was fairly good. The desserts were probably the highlight, i had a very nice rice pudding with figs and coconut ice cream and odd combination though one that complemented itself nicely.

The main negative point were the long time we had to wait for food to arrive, especially suprising when the restaurant didn't seem too busy, however the waitresses were exemplary and very polite.

Having tried many of the finer establishments in Norfolk, save Morston Hall (fully booked all week), Mad Moose (also known as 1 up) restaurant was my firm favourite.

The entrance into the restaurant is probably the oddest i've ever encountered, having to walk into the pub below and head to the toilets, adjacent to which you find the stairs that lead up to the restaurant.

The room itself has a decent decor. My starter of pan-fried scallops was overpowered by the sauce, but this was to be the only disappointment, though the rest of the family much enjoyed their starters. Mains was a delightful lamb cooked to perfection, with good presentation, and dessert was a good creme brullee with caramlised figs and peaches.

These dishes were accompanied by a chef's special of butternut squash and sweet potato, and a pre-dessert granita, which were both a pleasant suprise and appetising.

The service was also top draw, our waiter ran all the way down to road to give us our bottle of wine we had ordered to take home but had forgotten. This has to be the worst incarnation. With a colorful past (one of Kray brothers ended his days here) this deserves better.
Recalling that only a few months ago I had an alright meal, I took the family.
What a major disappointment.
After trying to find a meno, I realised the hideous kebab shop looking menu was in fact IT.
My choices were a Â£3.50 carvery and some grotty sounding starters. Needelss to say I had a drink, then left.
This is such a bad move.
The customers are now primarily becoming the grey-tops, which is not a problem, but on the whole, not big spenders. The local businesses have deserted this place in droves.
With a beautiful setting - rolling gardens down to the river - this is such a waste.

Miserable uncommunicative teenage waitresses.
The setting only barely lifts it - along the river. However this has it's downfall - annoying loud tourists trying to feed entire rolls or plates of chips to ducks. Though the amusement factor seeing these types trying to moor a boat is worth the grotty surroundings!

Calm & tranquil in an area otherwise comprising of busy pubs and loud children. For total peace, head upstairs, but upstairs bar rarely open. Spring is here, and with it bluebells, barbecues and the butter mountains of brilliant flesh that no man should ever see. It is a time to absorb every last golden drop of sun, ideally with beer in hand.

But what to do at lunch time? Dining outside is less easy in Norwich than, say, Nice â¬ unless of course youâ¬"re happy to snatch a pasty on the steps of Next, and observe the local teenagers be, as they say, alternative (which, as far as I can discern, amounts to little more than girls spitting and boys sharing make-up).

Two minutesâ¬" walk from the increasingly serious gotholick posturing is The Belgian Monk. Here we find a blessedly discreet terrace out back, where, in the absence of shade, one can settle down to an indecent variety of Belgian beers and soak up the UV till exquisitely pink. The beer starts at around Stella strength and increases in liability from there. Theyâ¬"ll also serve it with a straw, for those on a budget.

For those unfamiliar with Belgiumâ¬"s contribution to cuisine, it broadly comes down to chocolate and moules frites â¬ The Belgian Monk focuses more on the latter, with some thirteen different ways of serving them (twenty-six if you count the snack-sized servings). There may well be a chocolate menu, but I had red mist for meatballs and was disinclined to check.

However, I was under orders to get mussels for Mrs Wifey (she having baggsied the sitting down and holding the table out in the sun job), and so I ordered her moules with salmon and leek.

One seldom has the opportunity to use both â¬Ümedievalâ¬" and â¬Üsconceâ¬" in the same sentence, but with the chips arriving in such a vessel, it was, linguistically speaking, a dream come true.

Yet it was also grossly disheartening, as the best fries in the world are [arguably] Belgian by birth â¬ or at least cooking technique. Serving a chubby chip with your moules is like buying a box of Leonidas and finding a Double Decker inside. However, Mrs Wifey was happy, and that was the most important thing.
I was also happy: the meatballs were good.
