The week before my business trip to Newcastle, I wanted to do some research on where the best turkish restaurant was in the city.

I went on many websites and each time Red Mezze came up with some fab reviews.

However my visit in October 2009 was probably the worst turkish meal I have ever had.

I ordered from the waiter a diet coke for a drink. It was of my opinion that the drink would be served in a tall glass or a tumbler. But to my amazement was served in a red wine glass. Oh and the coke was flat.

For starters I had the houmous and Pitta bread. I found the houmous to be "Watered down and tasteless" and the salad which was served on the side was not fresh. It looked like it was two days old.

Not a very good start to the evening I thought. I had taken my time over my starter say 15 minutes.

My starter plate was cleared and two minutes later my main course was served. it then occurred to me that the main course had been sitting there and had not been made fresh to order, or the chef had got the timing wrong.

For main course i ordered the mixed grill and a feta salad.

The mixed grill came with three bite sized cubes of meat, chicken which were very dry. A child sized portion of rice. There was a lamb chop which was hardly noticeable. There was also this long sausage which tasted hideous.

I never thought "lightning would strike twice" as so to speak but the salad from the houmous starter dish turned up on the mixed grill plate and then to my amazement in the feta salad.

For me the crowning moment was the Feta salad.

Manky salad with grated feta. Can some one tell me where the olives were?

I called the waitress over and complained I said the same salad has appeared three times, I wanted an explanation. I didn't get an answer. They kindly took the feta salad off the bill.

After I had the meal I felt sick. I am not sure what was in that food but to me it was plain awful.

I have ate in many turkish restaurants and this is by far the worst one, I don't even know how they have stayed in business this long.

We made our way into Newcastle's Chinatown district in the firm belief that we would be able to enjoy a great chinese meal. Unfortunately we decided to go into the Cheeky Duck.
Having been shown to a table, we were presented with at least six different menus and it was a process of elimination as to what was relevant.
There is no set menu option, which is often a very good choice, so we had to pick our way through the 'a la carte'
The four of us ordered soups, starters and four main courses with fried rice.
When we tried to order drinks we were told that there was only beer available. Some customers had wine on their table and we queried this. We were told that they had just one glass of white wine available, and by the time the waitress went to the bar it had been sold.
We settled on 3 tiger beers and a glass of water!
The soup arrived. We had just started to eat when the starters and the main courses were also brought to the table and dumped.
We now had 4 bowls of soup, 2 platters of poor quality mixed starters, 4 plates of main courses and 4 plates of undercooked fried rice - all going cold.
The mixed starters of wontons and pork ribs were poor quality and the pork was very cheap meat.
By the time we got to the main courses they were cold. The duck dish - which was obviously how the restaurant got its name - was very fatty and tasteless. Other dishes were bland and you can get better from a mediocre takeaway.
We were nearly finished with the meal when we were told that white wine was now available - they had obviously been out to the off licence. We declined the offer.
At Â£70 we felt that this was the worst value for money in a meal out that we have ever had.
None of us would go back and we would not recommend this place to anyone.

We booked a table for 7.30, when we arrived it was packed and we were asked to leave and call back in 20 minutes the diners were having coffee, to which four of our party decided not to bother. We arrived back in 20 mins and we were told the table still wasn't ready the diners had paid but weren't leaving. I asked if we could have a complimentary drink whilst we were waiting, and was told "no as I had asked for it". I then spoke to the manager who said she'd sort us out, but didn't. We had to ask to order twice before they took our order, the garlic bread starters were nice the mains sadly disappointing my pollo luca was very salty and I had to ask for the chips that were ordered with it. I told a waiter who took it away and never offered an alternative, he came back saying the chef disagreed and i'd have to pay for it. I explained that another member of our party also agreed it was too salty to eat, and was basically told tough. The waiters then talked about us at the bar which was entirely unprofessional The other mains were also very bland, and tasteless however still edible hence we didn't mind paying for them. I complained again when we got our bill and the manageress then took off a bottle of wine from the bill but not my main. Excellent cafe.
Food is top notch for such a small place. I would highly recommend it for a quick lunch. It is worth the slightly higher cost!

Coffee quality comes mostly from machine not highly trained baristas - but its a damn good machine! Cappuccinos are perfect every time!

Staff are dismissive and not very helpful. Never smile or attempt to please you and make you feel welcome which is a GREAT shame because I love everything else about this place except the staff!

The gift shop in the back is SUPERB!!

Toilets are always spotless!

Having been once for a meal and disappointed with temperature of food (still frozen!) we still thought that another visit might prove more enjoyable. Our second visit was early on a Saturday before going to the theatre and our order was eventually taken and we were given undercooked food replaced with overcooked food! This venue has an open kitchen and we watched a member of staff pick his nose then rub result under the kitchen pass! To top it all our drinks were muddled up, we wrote a letter following our visit and have not heard anything from the company...................nine months ago. Didn't enjoy this restaurant at all. From the other reviews I was expecting decent food, however I did not enjoy my meal. We paid forty pounds for a portion of nachos for 2, prawn fajitas for 2 and 3 cokes. The nachos came drenched in that cheesey sauce you'd get with nachos at a cinema. There were plenty but they were not nice. The prawns in the fajitas were served with the tails still on...not ideal for preparing a fajita. The prawns and veg were served on a hot plate as I have often seen in Mexican restaurants however a lot of them became stuck to the plate and were therefore burnt and black. Our waiter didn't seem to be about and i had to wait a fair while to order more drinks. I didn't think the food was good enough for what we paid and I wouldn't recommend it.Didn't enjoy this restaurant at all. I was a customer for a couple of years but the food has been such poor quality , and the staff / management ( Joe and Gez )so rude and nasty that we have stopped going to this cafe....It became an embarrassment.

If you like your late lunch complimented with the fragrance of toilet cleaner , poor food ,and you like the staff to cheer when you leave (they don't like anyone to frequent the cafe after 4 pm ) then this is the place for you .... They will even throw in some insulting personal comments if you outstay your welcome !

I ate in La Vita last night, in general the food was mediocre at best, i was especially disapointed that we were served margerine in place of butter, the food was cooked reasonably well however the ingredients were sub standard and this showed. To start we had calamares which were over cooked and or had been frozen and therefore were hard and chewy. King prawns which were cooked well but had no heads and had therefore lost alot of flavour. My main gripe with this restaurant is the quality of service, there was a problem with the chip and pin machine at the end of the meal- it was taking too long to process my cards, this would have been ok if not for the attitude of the co-owner (he informed me) who spent 5 mins argueing with me at the table and insisted on taking out his own card and charging himself 1p in order to prove that the machine was working which I felt inferred that there was a problem with my cards rather than the machine. Thankfully the payment went through on the second attempt. I find it unacceptable that as a client i was subjected to this kind of infantile behaviour and embarrasment at the end of my meal, surely it is not difficult to simply say "I'm sorry madam there is a problem with the machine" and process the payment again. It was my wife's birthday recently so I had to find somewhere she would enjoy. We love the atomosphere of Stowell Street and my wife particularly enjoys Thai food. I booked Thai Siam because we have visited the Mandarin, the sister restaurant often before. At Thai Siam the staff were equally fantastic and took the time to advise on meals (for me). They understood my tastes exactly, were attentive and extremely polite. The food we must say was second to none, presented and cooked to perfection. We will definitely visit again, and again. On the whole the food was reasonably nice and the atmosphere in the restaurant was good but the service was beyond belief. Despite booking a table and arriving on time we were stood in the entrance of the restaurant for 25 minutes before we were taken to our table. That only happened as we asked why we were still waiting. The first 10 minutes nobody even acknowledged our existence. They eventually took our wine order and much later our food order. We had been in the restaurant for 75 minutes before we got any food. One starter was slightly tipped over the table and the waitress did apologise but didn't clean any of it up. After the main course, nobody asked if we wanted dessert and we sat for at least 45 minutes before they asked if we wanted anything else and that was simply because they wanted to close up. We asked for the bill which was incorrect but as it was in our favour we paid to the penny, left no tip and walked out. I would never go there again and certainly not recommend it. The Shangri La stands out from the crowd along Stowell Street, the centre of Newcastle's Chinatown. The decor is a strange mixture traditional Chinese restaurant meets Basildon dining room; the red lanterns and assorted Chinese knickknacks sat somewhat uncomfortably against a wallpapered background which was very 1999's council house. But don't let the plastic table clothes or the weird decor put you off, as the food is simply stunning. No, cheap it's not; but here you really do get what you pay for... generous portions of beautifully crafted Chinese food. The Won Ton soup was amongst the finest I have ever sampled and the steamed whole Sea Bass with ginger and spring onions was truly world-class.

We ended up here after a walk on the rather lovely beach at cullercoats, and a great find it was too. They are one of the few places that has woken up to the genius idea of "half pizza, half pasta". Pick a pizza, pick a pasta dish, mix and match, and the world is a wonderful place.

Ironically, whilst I was there I didn't have a split dish, but a creamy pasta dish instead. I did pinch some of my friends pizza through and it was good - thin crispy crust, baked in a blisteringly hot over. happy to say food is lovely as you'd expect from a chain type restaurant...... however on our last visit the waitress was less than pleasant but we just figured it was busy.
