I've never been to The Academy for a gig, although my boyfriend has seen several artists there - including Steve Cropper & The Animals and Alabama 3. The Academy is a really popular venue for a huge range of artists and it also hosts regular club nights, on a Friday and Saturday night. Bulletproof on a Saturday night is one of my favourite events in Newcastle. The range of music played is huge - anything from The Prodigy to Dusty Springfield is played at Bulletproof. The drinks are very reasonalbe, with a range of bottles at £2 or less. The Academy crowd is made up of mostly students, with the odd young professional (a la moi) sprinkled here and there. The Carling Academy used to be a cinema and a bingo hall, before it was refurbed a couple of years back and turned into a nightclub and music venue. However, I do think that, being the main theatre in Newcastle, the stage is a bit small and the number of seats limited.
Nevertheless, the theatre is gorgeous, both inside and out, and is a real gem in central Newcastle.
I recently saw Cats on tour at the Theatre Royal and was amazed by the show they managed to put on, especially taking into account the number of performers on a small stage, so this just shows that size doesn't always matter! The Theatre Royal is a beautiful place, but after visiting recently, I thought it was a lot smaller than I'd remembered from my childhood - obviously this is not the case, it must have just been the fact that I was so much smaller myself and everything seemed big. I find it a lovely place to enjoy a film and there is something really cosy about the place! The price of entry is standard to what you will pay at any cinema these days, the price of snacks and drinks is also pretty standard, although always extortionate! There is parking underneath the cinema and a lift so you can park, ride up and not have to go outside on a cold winters day! They sell the usual snacks and have a Ben and Jerry's consession selling lovely ice cream! It gets very busy for any blockbuster so it's worth booking in advance! This cinema is now an Empire cinema and not the Odeon anymore.
