Stumbled across this on the way up from the Station on the way to uni and needed a hazelnut mocha to calm the nerves and thought this would do. What a find this will do nicely smooth velvety and dreamy. Will certainly be back to try the smoothies and wraps. The quality of costa coffee is probably the poorest in the country. Their espresso beans are always dry, dusty and have twigs and debris within their bullet bags.

Their shots are not timed properly which creates bitter tasting espresso based drinks.

Their food/hygiene standards are appauling. I have witnessed on occasions steamed milk that has gone cold being reheated which is not only highly dangerous it is disgusting and creates overheated milk with an odd taste.

Milk jugs are not rinsed out often enough and I have seen new milk poured into old steamed milk. On one occasion i asked for a mocha and they forgot to steam my milk and i handed back the cold drink.
Instead of starting from scratch, the woman tipped the coldd chocolate milk with espresso into the jug and steamed it all together!!!! No joke!

I was so shocked i did not know what to say. I just walked outside and put it straight in the bin because I did not know where to begin correcting her amidst her cafe practice standards.

Absolutely shocking.

I am still in two minds over Blakes.

It is dark and dingy but rustic. Which would be appealing if it was cleaner. There are always a lot of flies buzzing around over the food and such. Its never harmed me yet but its not exactly what you want to see.

Besides that, there is probably the best selection of food in the city - cafe wise. There are lots of panini type foods, excellent scones and cakes.

The coffee is pretty good.
The tea pots need a good clean out as they arre really dusty and often leave a skum on top of your brew.

There is a good mix of people in there often.
The staff and welcoming and willing to help.

All in all, this place could be fantastic if they had a good clean out and put a new lick of paint on the walls to brighten the place up.

Just standard cleanliness practices need to be enforced.

I advise going in the morning and in winter when the flies arnt about and the cold has killed off most of the germs.I am still in two minds over Blakes.

Mark Stewart has done a wonderful job with Stewart & Co, all the food is personally sourced and mostly local. We have a deep sentimental connection to this business , but its become the pits in recent years , the food is beyond vile , and the staff are mostly sub human .

Honestly your better off going to Mac Donald's for an excuse for food .

This business needs a real reboot into the 21st century , such a waste , such a shame......

Another place that thinks they can comptete with quality places like Cafe Royal, Blakes and Kaffeccinos. Quite frankly it is not in the same league.
Passing the old grannies in between there and Mark Tonies. The coffee was too hot sharp bitter, they probably think a Barista sits in a law court. Bread is baked on the premises then placed on dusty wooden shelves for custpmers to handle, sneeze on or transmit any bugs you care to mention. just got to know this place recently and i've been telling everyone at work about it- really lovely place!

it reminds me of lovely italian coffee shops i've been to on holiday... simple sandwiches with great ingredients lightly toasted in a couple of minutes with a friendly owner who clearly loves what he does.

i'd been in a couple of times for breakfast, then came in again about a week later, and the guy behind the counter says something on the lines of "nice to see you again" and asks me if i'd like an earl grey and a cheese and parma ham croissant (exeactly what i'd had on my two previous visits)!!

since then i've been a regular at lunchtime as well- i think i've tried just about everything on the menu now and it's all great, but i'd go for either the bresaola ciabatta (cured beef, cheese, rocket, mustard), the bacon and brie or the falafel, rocket and salsa. also excellent salads and cakes.

This place has only been open a few months but they already have queues out the door!
It's so good. Everything is so fresh and made to order and the range of fillings available is amazing.
The staff are friendly and helpful and always come up with good combinations if you can't decide.
The shop is always very clean and they also have a good range of snacks and drinks on offer - including fentimans which I totally love!
Seriously - check this place out - you'll not be disappointed.
It's very reasonably priced too - you can get a ham sandwich for £2 for example or go all out for a mega sandwich for less than £3.50!!

Clayton Street Chippy on the corner of Pink Lane is a decent chippy, perfect for dropping into after a night on the tiles. The outlet is always busy, especially after The Carling Academy kicks out at 3am. The chips at CSC are always nice, especially when teamed with a pizza slice (a bargainous 60p!!!) and garlic sauce. The pizzas here are lovely, as is the fish - but I wasn't too keen on the chicken burgers. I'm also assured that the chip butties with gravy are a delight too. CSC also sells Irn Bru, which just gives itself extra brownie points in my book. You can also get take away and Iâ¬"d recommend this over sitting in because it really is rather small in there and it feels like the waitressing staff are peering over your shoulder (even though theyâ¬"re probably not). Plenty of veggie options and the staff are very helpful. Pretty much any of the meat options can be ordered with tofu as an alternative. The bright green spinach wraps are my personal favourite, as is any wrap with rice and soy sauce.
