I popped into the back bar on a sunday night with a couple of friends a few weeks ago. It was a quiet evening with about 10 others in the bar. At 10.50pm the barmaid rang last orders. I went up to the bar and stood next to a man who was getting served. When she finished serving him the barmaid left the bar for about a minute. On her return she ignored me and started talking to a group of men. I asked for service and she said she'd called time. She clearly had no intention of serving me. This type of service is terrible and not uncommon according to others I have spoken to recently. Such a shame considering what a great pub it once was. I shall not reurn.

Good beers, a roof top beer garden and good staff. I love the Forth, it's just a shame that it's always a bit crowded, and half the clients are peacocks. Never before have I run across so many mullet touting, sunglasses wearing, poser indie kids. That said, I'll still stick to drinking here on a Friday night, worth it for the Archor Steam and apple white beer. Oh - great burgers too.

The Cumberland Arms is to me a fine starting off point for the Ouseburn crawl. Good beer, good staff and a clientelle who are there for the beer and likely the sounds of the varied music you can hear there. More than anything else, this pub scores highly on location. Itâ¬"s in the city centre but a little off the most beaten pathways â¬ away from the shops (so a little quieter during the day) and from the focus spots for night-time activity such as the Bigg Market and Quayside. But it isnâ¬"t just this slightly off-path location that makes it a winner; itâ¬"s also its lofty perch above the River Tyne. And the pub makes the most of the views, with an outdoor terrace and a raised area inside which looks out over the river to Gateshead beyond. OK, maybe a view of Gateshead isnâ¬"t going to grab you, but with three of the Tyneâ¬"s famous bridges in the foreground thereâ¬"s plenty to look at, and at night the light of the city (Iâ¬"m told) make the view even better.

But you could get a view from many places, I know. This is a pub and you want a drink! Well, if real ale is your thing youâ¬"re in luck, with a decent selection of regulars and a varied rotation of guest ales. In fact, the pub has been listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide every year since 1998. We sampled a wonderful hazelnut coffee porter from the Solitaire Brewery on our latest visit and were impressed enough to buy a second round of the same. Once youâ¬"ve chosen your drink thereâ¬"s plenty of room in which to relax and enjoy it, and you can also admire the stained glass windows which depict various scenes linked to the surrounding area â¬ the bridges, the houses stacked up on the steep river banks, boats on the Tyne etc.

There is Sky TV so you can watch the Toon on a match day and I imagine the atmosphere is as good as any other pub in the city though weâ¬"ve not been there to watch a game. Or for something a little different, I understand that there is a Folk Club here on a Monday evening.

Me and my friends thought we would have our last drink in here, as it was on the way to Monument Metro. We were walking in, everything fine, then out of no where, this dude in a suit says to my friend "right if you're going to be like that, you're not getting a drink" we all looked at eachother puzzled, my friend replied "what are u talkin about?" he said "I don't like the way ur friend just looked at me". Couldnt believe it#!! he kept saying, "you're not getting served, that's it, get out, the policeare on there way". As if police would arrest you for lookingat someone 'funny'. Apparently he is called David, managed to catch his name. Disgusting customer service, paranoid twat on a power trip. I love this pub. Its a small, simple but fantastic pub. No frills, nothing flash, just down to earth. The service is great. The atmosphere is friendly, quiet and relaxing. Rating: 4.00The Boathouse in Newburn is situated right on the banks of the river. It has space in front of the pub for parking and a lovely big beer garden out the back. The pub is small and traditional but very welcoming, with really friendly staff. The owner's gorgeous dogs tend to scamper about too, which for a dog lover, was a delight in itself. The prices aren't too bad for draught and the house double spirits are good value. The food here is alos spot on - a party of 6 of us enjoyed Sunday lunch here a couple of months ago and we were very impressed. There was a choice of 4 meats (or a combo of all 4), served with big platters of veg, roasties, beautiful homemade yorkshire puds and really meaty gravy. The portions were a good size and halfway through the meal, the very friendly and attentive waitress asked if we would like any extra roasties or yorkshires - fab! I visited The Lounge again last night (a Tuesday evening) for the first time in about 2 years. We were enticed into the bar by the signs promising happy hour offers and 'The Buzzer Game', which gave customers the chance to win reduced price/free drinks. We were really chuffed when we got 2 pints for Â£2.90 by getting half price drinks! My pint of Red C cider went down very well and I'm assured that my boyfriend's pint of Tuborg was also very nice. The pub is large and had a mixed clientele of students, young professionals and more mature customers. The games machine offered added entertainment for punters and I was also impressed with the food menu, even though I didn't sample it: a big emphasis is placed on the 'mix and mash' section of the menu, which offers a wide variety of different sausgaes, types of mash and styles of gravy, for Â£5.95. There were also lots of other dishes on the menu. I've only visited Red House (which is situated on Newcastle's Quayside) once, but I did like the bar. It's very traditional inside, just like its neighbour Bob Trollope's, but it's bigger with more seating. We went in on a St Patrick's Day a couple of years ago and we really enjoyed it. There are TVs around the pub showing sports and music videos and the clientele are quite mature and very friendly. The bar staff were also very pleasant and more than happy to give out Guinness memorabilia! The drinks were pretty reasonably priced and the atmosphere in the pub was very pleasant. I also had a look at the food menu and liked what I saw, although I didn't order anything. The Bewick House is a bar located right next to Central Station. It's quite a large bar that has fantastic food and drink offers: many of the food offers are Â£3.50, including lasagne, chips & salad and curry, rice & chips. There are also great 2 for 1 offers on Strongbow, Foster's, John Smiths, house wine, selected spirits and bottles before 8pm during the week. The bar was qquite busy when we visited recently on a Tuesday night and the bar man was really helpful and friendly. There's lots of seating dotted around the bar, much of it in the form of really comfy sofas. There was also music on in the bar and music videos playing. Gotham Town is a nice place to visit for food and reasonably priced drinks. The decor is very gothic, which gives the place a fantastic atmosphere. Gotham offers a wide range of drinks and has offers on selected bottles and doubles throuhgout the week. The food is also good value - the burgers are really nice, as are the chicken kievs. Being situated in a prime location, just opposite Central Station, Gotham is very popular with travellers and locals alike. I've only visited The Old George once and I was quite impressed by the cosy, traditional feel of the pub. The bar is deceptively large, with lots of different rooms and levels. The drinks are reasonably priced and there's music playing all day. The crowd tend to be more mature but they're really friendly and welcoming. We sat up some stairs at the back of the oub, in a really cosy little spot. We loved the history of the place, with The Old George claiming to be one of the oldest pubs in Newcastle, and also claiming to be haunted! The courtyard area outside the pub is also a nice place for smokers and the bar & door staff are really friendly. My advice? Destination is an average sized, fashionable bar situated eight next door to the Royal Station Hotel in Newcastle City Centre. This basement bar is accessed by a flight of stairs, which unfortunately would make it difficult or impossible for disabled people to visit the bar. Inside, the bar is quite spacious with a modern decor and plenty of seating. The drinks aren't cheap, but there are plenty of offers to take advantage of, including the buzzer game: this entitles you to either full priced drinks, BOGOF, half priced drinks or free drinks. Food is also served at Destination which I've never sampled, but looks good value. Despite drinking in Newcastle for about 8 years, I had never ventured into Jimmyz until a few weeks ago. Located on the Quayside, Jimmyz is quite a trendy looking bar and is always busy, especially at weekends. We ventued into Jimmyz on a Saturday night, enticed by the poster in the window that offered 2 bottles of Bulmers cider for Â£5. The bar inside was beautifully decorated, with a range of different fabrics and light fittings used to create a really nice atmosphere. The place was jam-packe dwith young trendies, professionals and some older people too. A word of warnign though - although my 2 bottles of Bulmers only set me back a very respectable Â£5, two vodka and cranberries cost a mate almost a tenner! Jimmyz only serves double measures, so be aware. I visited on a Tuesday night and unsuprisingly it was very quiet. There were a range of offers available, including treble spirits for Â£3, which we of course took advantage of! The prices of the other dirnks were rather expensive - nothing compared to the Â£1.75 cocktails that I used to consume on a Monday night, back in 2003!
