What a scanky pit-hole! The restaurant is a dump. There was old food on the floor. We were seated and not given menus. The food we had was pretty nice but nothing above average that you would rave about. Millies Cookies has little booths in a couple of places around Newcastle, in Eldon squre and here in this smaller mini-mall. The smell of the cookies permeates the air throughout the building and makes a visit to the shop almost irresistable!
The cookies themselves are very nice, appropriately moist and sweet. There is a good choice available. You can also get giant cookies made up with iced messages written on them. This leads me into talking about what I hate about Millies: they always have a display of their giant cookies but they mustn't change the display very often so the cookies are always dusty and old-looking. They look anything but eadible. It really puts me off buying sometimes!
You can also get milkshakes here but they are actually just whizzed-up icecream with a straw! I got a chocolate mint drink lately and it had hard lumps in it, which isn't really a drink at all! I popped into the back bar on a sunday night with a couple of friends a few weeks ago. It was a quiet evening with about 10 others in the bar. At 10.50pm the barmaid rang last orders. I went up to the bar and stood next to a man who was getting served. When she finished serving him the barmaid left the bar for about a minute. On her return she ignored me and started talking to a group of men. I asked for service and she said she'd called time. She clearly had no intention of serving me. This type of service is terrible and not uncommon according to others I have spoken to recently. Such a shame considering what a great pub it once was. I shall not reurn.

The week before my business trip to Newcastle, I wanted to do some research on where the best turkish restaurant was in the city.

I went on many websites and each time Red Mezze came up with some fab reviews.

However my visit in October 2009 was probably the worst turkish meal I have ever had.

I ordered from the waiter a diet coke for a drink. It was of my opinion that the drink would be served in a tall glass or a tumbler. But to my amazement was served in a red wine glass. Oh and the coke was flat.

For starters I had the houmous and Pitta bread. I found the houmous to be "Watered down and tasteless" and the salad which was served on the side was not fresh. It looked like it was two days old.

Not a very good start to the evening I thought. I had taken my time over my starter say 15 minutes.

My starter plate was cleared and two minutes later my main course was served. it then occurred to me that the main course had been sitting there and had not been made fresh to order, or the chef had got the timing wrong.

For main course i ordered the mixed grill and a feta salad.

The mixed grill came with three bite sized cubes of meat, chicken which were very dry. A child sized portion of rice. There was a lamb chop which was hardly noticeable. There was also this long sausage which tasted hideous.

I never thought "lightning would strike twice" as so to speak but the salad from the houmous starter dish turned up on the mixed grill plate and then to my amazement in the feta salad.

For me the crowning moment was the Feta salad.

Manky salad with grated feta. Can some one tell me where the olives were?

I called the waitress over and complained I said the same salad has appeared three times, I wanted an explanation. I didn't get an answer. They kindly took the feta salad off the bill.

After I had the meal I felt sick. I am not sure what was in that food but to me it was plain awful.

I have ate in many turkish restaurants and this is by far the worst one, I don't even know how they have stayed in business this long.

I stayed at the Marlborough Hotel this year with my girlfriend and her child, we stayed there for one week in the summer holidays, first impresions from the outside was very nice they are right on the sea front, the staff were great the owner Andrew I think greeted us and showed us to our room, we had a nice room with a sea view , after unpacking we wanted something to do and they had a great list of places to go and thing to do enough for us for the hole week, the food was good, they have WiFi internet.

We made our way into Newcastle's Chinatown district in the firm belief that we would be able to enjoy a great chinese meal. Unfortunately we decided to go into the Cheeky Duck.
Having been shown to a table, we were presented with at least six different menus and it was a process of elimination as to what was relevant.
There is no set menu option, which is often a very good choice, so we had to pick our way through the 'a la carte'
The four of us ordered soups, starters and four main courses with fried rice.
When we tried to order drinks we were told that there was only beer available. Some customers had wine on their table and we queried this. We were told that they had just one glass of white wine available, and by the time the waitress went to the bar it had been sold.
We settled on 3 tiger beers and a glass of water!
The soup arrived. We had just started to eat when the starters and the main courses were also brought to the table and dumped.
We now had 4 bowls of soup, 2 platters of poor quality mixed starters, 4 plates of main courses and 4 plates of undercooked fried rice - all going cold.
The mixed starters of wontons and pork ribs were poor quality and the pork was very cheap meat.
By the time we got to the main courses they were cold. The duck dish - which was obviously how the restaurant got its name - was very fatty and tasteless. Other dishes were bland and you can get better from a mediocre takeaway.
We were nearly finished with the meal when we were told that white wine was now available - they had obviously been out to the off licence. We declined the offer.
At Â£70 we felt that this was the worst value for money in a meal out that we have ever had.
None of us would go back and we would not recommend this place to anyone.

We booked a table for 7.30, when we arrived it was packed and we were asked to leave and call back in 20 minutes the diners were having coffee, to which four of our party decided not to bother. We arrived back in 20 mins and we were told the table still wasn't ready the diners had paid but weren't leaving. I asked if we could have a complimentary drink whilst we were waiting, and was told "no as I had asked for it". I then spoke to the manager who said she'd sort us out, but didn't. We had to ask to order twice before they took our order, the garlic bread starters were nice the mains sadly disappointing my pollo luca was very salty and I had to ask for the chips that were ordered with it. I told a waiter who took it away and never offered an alternative, he came back saying the chef disagreed and i'd have to pay for it. I explained that another member of our party also agreed it was too salty to eat, and was basically told tough. The waiters then talked about us at the bar which was entirely unprofessional The other mains were also very bland, and tasteless however still edible hence we didn't mind paying for them. I complained again when we got our bill and the manageress then took off a bottle of wine from the bill but not my main. Stumbled across this on the way up from the Station on the way to uni and needed a hazelnut mocha to calm the nerves and thought this would do. The quality of costa coffee is probably the poorest in the country. Their espresso beans are always dry, dusty and have twigs and debris within their bullet bags.

Their shots are not timed properly which creates bitter tasting espresso based drinks.

Their food/hygiene standards are appauling. I have witnessed on occasions steamed milk that has gone cold being reheated which is not only highly dangerous it is disgusting and creates overheated milk with an odd taste.

Milk jugs are not rinsed out often enough and I have seen new milk poured into old steamed milk. On one occasion i asked for a mocha and they forgot to steam my milk and i handed back the cold drink.
Instead of starting from scratch, the woman tipped the coldd chocolate milk with espresso into the jug and steamed it all together!!!! No joke!

I was so shocked i did not know what to say. I just walked outside and put it straight in the bin because I did not know where to begin correcting her amidst her cafe practice standards.

I am still in two minds over Blakes.

It is dark and dingy but rustic. Which would be appealing if it was cleaner. There are always a lot of flies buzzing around over the food and such. Its never harmed me yet but its not exactly what you want to see.

Besides that, there is probably the best selection of food in the city - cafe wise. There are lots of panini type foods, excellent scones and cakes.

The coffee is pretty good.
The tea pots need a good clean out as they arre really dusty and often leave a skum on top of your brew.

There is a good mix of people in there often.
The staff and welcoming and willing to help.

All in all, this place could be fantastic if they had a good clean out and put a new lick of paint on the walls to brighten the place up.

Just standard cleanliness practices need to be enforced.

I advise going in the morning and in winter when the flies arnt about and the cold has killed off most of the germs.I am still in two minds over Blakes.

Excellent cafe.
Food is top notch for such a small place. I would highly recommend it for a quick lunch. It is worth the slightly higher cost!

Coffee quality comes mostly from machine not highly trained baristas - but its a damn good machine! Cappuccinos are perfect every time!

Staff are dismissive and not very helpful. Never smile or attempt to please you and make you feel welcome which is a GREAT shame because I love everything else about this place except the staff!

The gift shop in the back is SUPERB!!

Toilets are always spotless!

Acoustics are terrible, the walls bounce everyones conversations around making it difficult to have a nice convo! But its not a major thing.

Mark Stewart has done a wonderful job with Stewart & Co, all the food is personally sourced and mostly local. Having been once for a meal and disappointed with temperature of food (still frozen!) we still thought that another visit might prove more enjoyable. Our second visit was early on a Saturday before going to the theatre and our order was eventually taken and we were given undercooked food replaced with overcooked food! This venue has an open kitchen and we watched a member of staff pick his nose then rub result under the kitchen pass! To top it all our drinks were muddled up, we wrote a letter following our visit and have not heard anything from the company...................nine months ago. Didn't enjoy this restaurant at all. From the other reviews I was expecting decent food, however I did not enjoy my meal. We paid forty pounds for a portion of nachos for 2, prawn fajitas for 2 and 3 cokes. The nachos came drenched in that cheesey sauce you'd get with nachos at a cinema. There were plenty but they were not nice. The prawns in the fajitas were served with the tails still on...not ideal for preparing a fajita. The prawns and veg were served on a hot plate as I have often seen in Mexican restaurants however a lot of them became stuck to the plate and were therefore burnt and black. Our waiter didn't seem to be about and i had to wait a fair while to order more drinks.
