Judging by the performance of getting a table at Dimitris we should have been in for a fantastic night! Booked a table for four at 8pm on a Saturday well over a week in advance, however needed to add another two guests couple of days later, was told that the only time they could accommodate six would be at 9.30pm after some discussion with the manager during several calls we agreed that we should arrive around 9 and if the table was free then we would be seated. We arrived at 9.10 made ourselves known to the manager who was very of hand and told us to wait in the bar and he let us know when the table was ready, dead on 9.30 not a minute earlier we was shown down stairs to our table for six, along with a party for 18, I pointed out to the manager that we wanted to be in the main restaurant and not in the basement with what was a private party, his response was â¬Syou will enjoy it, I assure youâ¬

Ive been in the boundary now on a few occasions and have to say the food is brilliant, especially the carvery that is now being served every sunday, the music on a friday is good with the dj called Gary and the saturdays are even better with rix the mix cos he does karaoke aswell as disco

Friendly managers, barstaff and entertainment staff. plus a great outside decking area for anyone who may want to smoke which is also ideal for those hot sunny days and nights

a definate must for a great local night out !!!

Rating: 1.00At a fast food restaurant i do not expect to receive gourmet food or gourmet service. What i do expect is quick, simple, properly cooked food for a reasonable price. If i have any issues i expect them to be given due consideration.

I got neither from my one and never-to-be-repeated trip to Allen's Fried Chicken on Oxford Road close to St Peter's Square.

After ordering a chicken fillet burger meal i sat down to eat my food. When i found a deep-fried mosquito-type fly in my chips my appetite escaped me. I returned to the counter and asked politely for a refund on my barely touched meal. The response i received was simply astounding;

The fly was "my responsibility" and must have flown into the restaurant and landed on my chips (somehow deep frying itself in the process). I was told "once food passes over the counter it was no longer his problem". I was further told if the fly had been on the chips when i had bought them "i should have noticed it and said something straight away". I am alas getting older now, and am no longer able to see through the paper bags that hold the meal and the chips themselves.

My repeated request for a full refund (a quite considerable Â£4.10) was absolutely not possible-the "manager" assured me the till could not perform this task - i can only imagine what trails you must conquer to attain change from this machine's obviously unwilling bowels..?!

After asking the "manager" for his name - as i now wished to make a formal complaint against him - he suddenly went tongue tied, turned out the restaurant's lights, pulled down the shutters and demanded that my friend and I leave as they were now closing (this despite another couple in the corner of the restaurant who were not asked to leave-presumably Allen's have exclusive "lock-in's" with select customers...) i wonder if their opening hours will remain at the new 9.40pm closing time or mysteriously revert back to a later "catch the pub-leavers-going-home" business...?

I have been left with not only a sour taste in my mouth but also the theological question of "just how drunk will i have to be before i forget my experience and happily accept assorted diptera in my food again"...? a quandary indeed. Youâ¬"re going to have to trust me on this one, but the place is legit. Iâ¬"m not talking dining, letâ¬"s be honest this is grubbing. Itâ¬" has the feel of any old fast food joint/chip shop.

Youâ¬"ve got to try the seek kebab wrapped in Nan, itâ¬"s exceptional. Itâ¬"s sort of a no brainer really but naan always trump pita doesntâ¬" it? Get there earlier as itâ¬"s get is fair share of drunk uni students.

Every cloud, however dark, has a silver lining. Take for instance the "global credit crunch" (and leave your cynicism about whether the effects of the 'crunch' have been amplified by hyterical media reporting at the door).

If there is indeed a crunch, it's no doubt going to be pretty joyless in some respects. But one silver lining I'm hoping for is a reduction in the credit-fuelled-footballers-wife-aspirant lifestyle so currently prevalent, which values venue-namedropping above service, quality, and, above all, fun. The name for this culture, coined, right now, by me, is Costly and Curt. I may be pissing into the wind, but the campaign for the banishment of Costly and Curt starts right here. Join me, and let's start a tearoom together...

Epitomising "Costly and Curt" is the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. I was there for the North East Swot Awards on Thursday (I didn't win). I hate chain hotels at the best of times. However obsequious the marketing, however soft-focus the photography, it always glares through to me that I am not a guest; I am potential profit. The chain hotel's mission in life is to sell me as many things as possible at as high a price as they dare, whilst spending the bare minimum on doing this selling, for example in staff training, or simple goods quality.

The meal was fine. Nothing wrong with it, standard C&B fare. My creme bruleÃ© was actually pretty good. The Deansgate suite is a pleasant enough C&B room. The 'spiral staircase' atrium is actually fairly cool. The staff asking each of my colleagues in turn to order drinks at our table felt more like begging than hospitality. The bar staff were badly trained and rude. Other than that, there was very little wrong with the night, but very little right. The whole function could've been held in a Travelodge, it would've been none the worse off in terms of service and quality, but my wallet would've left been a hell of a lot better off. Palace Hotel - Not arf bad by skipchris

The palace hotel does an odd sort of 'faded glamour'. I'm not an expert, or even half-qualified to discuss architecture, but from check-in to check-out I was completely taken with this place's quirks.

The lobby is massive and grand: columns, marble, well lit vaulted ceiling, lots of mahogany, it's a suitably awe-inspiring welcome to the hotel. Similarly impressive was my room: feeling about three stories high, curtains so heavy and tall I could barely draw them. The bathroom was larger than my own dear bathroom at home.

So, the Palace is spacious. We didn't stay for dinner, but my full english breakfast in the tasteful, refurbished bar and restaurant was super. The service in the bar was also intelligent and attentive enough: bonus points to the young man who advised us "not to bother" with the hotel booking us a taxi, we'd be better off with one from the rank outside Sainsbury's (he was right).

The Palace wasn't perfect though. Whilst I admired its quirky architecture and intelligent, polite staff, some of its quirks let it down (or at least could do, depending on what you want from your hotel...)

I've heard varying quotes that between Â£8-10 million is being spent on renovating the Palace. This seems all well and good for Lobby and Bar, the Palace's blue-eyed firstborns; but Rooms, the Palace's ginger-haired stepchild could do with seeing more of this inheritance. Slightly "mended" carpets, slightly "knacked" fixtures and fittings, slightly "tiny and slow" lift... In fact, the lift began to nark me so much, I sought out the stairs, which were a whole new world of interesting.

Ultimately though, it depends what you're after: Are you a couple on honeymoon? (In Manchester??) or are you on business or leisure, looking for for somewhere to stay which won't bore you to death with bland decor and identikit, untrained staff? With its subtle lighting and shabby-chic design, Marmalade has the look and feel of a comfortable, established wine bar. The wine list isn't bad either.

Food-wise, the chef really excels in sourcing quality local ingredients and awarding due respect to each one in the preparation. The emphasis is on traditional British cuisine, with items such as pies, roasts and crumbles on the menu.

If they're offering the Victorian onion soup starter when you visit, order it at once - this rich, tangy 100-year-old recipe should really hang around for a few more centuries.

The only down side is that you may feel as though you've eaten a fantastic Sunday pub lunch, rather than indulged in the fine evening dining experience that you might expect for the prices. Plus, I know it's the trend at the moment, but I really resent paying extra for vegetables to accompany your mains - it's a personal gripe for which I make no apologies.

Still, all in all, this place is a bastion of British tradition. And - to misquote the strapline of a certain well-known pub brew - it's probably the best pub grub in the world. We visited Palmiro with high expectations. Upon arrival the restaurant was empty - not a good sign! Unfortunately our worst fears were realised upon reciept of the first, second and third courses (INC DRINKS!). Food was of a really poor disappointing quality, esp. the risotto being reheated and dry. Unfortunately, while eating my main course (chicken supreme) I also discovered a large curly black hair in my food. We noticed on departure that the chef had a large curly head of hair. I would strongly urge people to steer clear of this joke of an eatery.We visited Palmiro with high expectations. Upon arrival the restaurant was empty - not a good sign! We went here on Valentines day and it was a set menu. There was not a great choice and oysters was part of one of two starters, the other, vegetarian option, apparently only available if pre-booked. My girlfriend hates oysters but the staff were very accommodating and managed to get her the vegetarian option.
For the mains, the steak was sumptuously cooked, with a good variety for the palette. Again they were more than accommodating, dicing my steak for me as I was in a sling.
The atmosphere was perfect for the occasion with a fantastic singer walking around throughout the night.

Pre-drinks in the bar offers a good cocktail and aperitif selection, followed by a huge wine list once you are seated. The food is excellent but pricey.

Good standard teppanyaki fare. If you've never had teppanyaki before, this is a good restaurant to start in. Great quality food (although very heavy on the garlic!) and an enjoyable evening out. The chefs are flashy and smooth without being too showy. Great atmosphere - close-set tables of eight seated around the teppanyaki counter. Ignore the tacky neon lighting at the front (I nearly went somewhere else) - it's just standard Chinatown fare and doesn't reflect upon the mood or dÃ©cor of the restaurant's interior.

Our meal came to Â£45/head but that's including sushi/sashimi, wine, drinks and sake. Set menus range from about Â£20-Â£28 including the teppanyaki dish, rice, assorted side dishes (starters) and dessert.

Miyako no longer exists! I have been there and it's all boarded up except for the basement which is a CD/DVD shop. KATSOURIS shop in the Bury Market is packed with just about every delicacy imaginable. My mouth was watering just looking, could not wait to get home and try all the small portions of never seen never eaten. Greek, Polish,Spanish,Italian Cheeses, German Hams,the list is endless. If this store was within walking distance I would very quickly become a very big fat pig.

Great value and the food is not compromised. I have been here a couple of times and for the price you pay you get decent food. A nice selection of dishes and if I remember rightly you can get a student discount on top of the buffet prices.Great value and the food is not compromised.
