Had soft shell crabs which were 90% soggy mess with some tasteless matter in the middle and Pad Thai noodles which were the worst I have ever tasted; lots of sugar on a messy dollop of tasteless nooddles. I've had much better and "authentic" Thai food from M&S and all the other supermarkets. Another restaurant in a trendy area that thinks it can throw any old rubbish at not too discerning people.Went there having read reviews; what a disappointment; sure it is good value and service is efficient (but without a hint of a smile) but the food is extremely poor. So based on a recommendation by a car park attendant at Sainsbury's we decided to try it. Well, what a pleasant surprise it was. Food was as good as the other two (known to be the the bees-knees). The Karela dahl was superb, better than the other two by miles. Everything was quite reasonable in price considering it's decor was no less down market than the other two. After all you go to these places for the great food and the ability to bring your own booze. So there was nothing lacking here. The manager was so attentive. Every time he saw us looking for a waiter to order more, he sent on of them straight over to us nearly at once. Very quick serving times as well. OK, all these places have a limited repertoire in menu items. But that is exactly what veterans need. Well for the present it is good bye Lahore & Tayyabs. Well of course until MM goes greedy and inflate their prices unnecessarily. The impressive bit about this MM restaurant chain is that they have got their presence in so many places especially like Southall, where they will have a very discerning and veteran clientele and if they have survived over there- what more can one say. They are just opening one in Ilford and in a couple of month's in my Harrow area. I can hardly wait! . By the way MM could you get some proper wine glasses next time. On the wall was the plaque for 'Best London Indian (sic) restaurant 2008.' God! the others must be really pants. Ramadan meant no table service (never heard that one before) so, after fruitless attempted conversation with a nice young man who spoke two words of English, queue up in takeaway section. Shelf at eye level for most people, so bend down to have conversation with staff member. No obvious menu, so no prices. Plate of mild chicken curry and another of hot (same, with an added green chilli) both plonked in microwave. Two rices, an onion bhajee, dhal and two plain waters: £25. £15 would have been fair. Food still cold. Chicken fresh and not frozen but a little pink. Customers next to us left a lot of their meal and went. After effects: wind - lots of it and scent-free....just like the food. In the street outside, a top of the range BMW X5 with personal plate matching the restaurant.A place that everyone else recommended. Despite being very busy, the service was fast and the food fresh. We enjoyed the fusion of a Western style white tablecloth establishment with the obligatory Indian curryhouse atmosphere. The generous portions, ease of ordering drinks, and general comfort during our time here was most appreciated. I expect we will be back here soon, and expect to recommend it to friends as well. Which of course prompted other suggestions and before long we had a proper steak-off kicking off.
Now the pedant in me cannot agree with the 'best steak in London' characterisation.
Although not necessarily untrue, for that statement to be certainly true the person making it would have to have eaten every steak in London, before deciding that Hawksmoor's was the best. Even then the subjectivity of that clause leaves plenty of room for it to be disputed.
However, what I can confidently say is that Hawksmoor serves 'the best steak that I have eaten in London'. Small change there making all the difference.

I may be boring you with semantics here, so let's get down to the details.
My friend had a 225gram fillet, which he absolutely loved. I didn't try it.
I went for the 600g monster rib-eye. And what a great decision that was. Don't be put off by its size. That baby goes down like....err I'm struggling for a good analogy here...well...let's say that I'm pretty sure you'll be able to finish it unless you're someone like hollowlegs ;-) (I could be very wrong here).

We didn't bother with starters, as they were sure to prove a distraction from the main event. The triple-cooked chips did help adding some different texture to your palate.
The steaks were washed down with a lovely Malbec reasonably priced at £35.

On top of the food I love Hawksmoor's relaxed and vibrant atmosphere. The French waitress was always with a friendly smile, even when she was completely bemused by my friend's witty (?) remarks on how she poured the wine.

Whether it's for a business occasions, hanging out with mates or having a romantic night out Hawksmoor ticks all the right boxes. I met up with a learned friend who hails from Bengal for lunch today and thought it a foregone conclusion that weâ¬"ll be heading for either LKH or Tayyabs. However the friend suggested otherwise that we should head to Café Naz instead for its buffet food was as good as the other two and most certainly cheaper as well.

The huge choice of restaurants in Brick Lane is like a minefield, it was bewildering to note that almost all of them were tagged with an award for the best curry joint of the year (Iâ¬"m pretty sure these guys concoct their own awards). It was indeed a relief to have a seasoned Brick Lane gourmet showing me the way. Iâ¬"m no fan of buffets but I was assured that the quality of the cooking was good enough to attract a healthy following of Asian diners. The dining room is at best contemporary and airport-loungey. The service was competent and perfectly accommodating when Thames water was requested.

It was immediately impressionable to see a roasted leg of lamb included in the buffet, this delicious self-carving dish was an unusual sight in any restaurants. The basics of bhajjis, salads, nan bread and rice were all competently prepared and cooked. The chicken (on the bone) curry was absolutely fantastic, right up there with the above mentioned stalwarts as was the lamb and spinach curry of Palak Gosht. Apart from the Chicken Korma, it was quite obvious that the five delectable choices of meat curries were cooked for the discerning and serious palates, no well tempering or dumbing down here. The tarka dal, an industry standard thatâ¬"s easy to disappoint was a triumph; scrumptious and not too stodgy nor watery. Buffets are in essence bad for the waist, especially if the cooking was decent; well after three mammoth helpings I omitted from the sweets and fresh fruit basket. Friend thought that the Gulab jamun (syrupy dough) and orange jelly were a match made in heaven.

One tiny fret about this place was the dishes served were not temperature hot enough, but then again it was supremely cold this afternoon. Three gratifying points about this place; Asian diners tucking in, staff (including the cooks!) helping themselves from the buffet for their own tiffins and of course the fine food. Café Naz, welcome to the fold.
Last year alone I thought there were only two definitive Indian restaurants in the East End worth reminiscing, Lahore Kebab House and New Tayyabs (although both are technically Pakistani, but â¬ÜIndianâ¬" defines the genre). It does really good food really well. There's no pretentions here, just good quality cooking. I love the attitude at Al Volo.
Al Volo is the smallest Italian you'll find in the City.
