The Hoxton hotel was recently voted number 2 in a list of the best hotels in the UK by Guardian readers. It is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. I was lucky enough to obtain one of the 1 pound rooms (standard stay is from about 109 per night for a double). There were fantastic perks including a free pret a manger breakfast left on a hook outside your door on a morning to a reasonably priced small 'shop' located in reception downstairs (in opposed to ridiculously high priced mini-bar prices - the only thing in your fridge in your room is free water and milk - fantastic). The room itself was quirky and original with an immaculate stylish bathroom. Location wise it was close to the tube station and a short hop skip and jump to Brick Lane for a curry. We stayed at this hotel over the New Year to watch the fireworks in London, it is great for the location, we walked to and from the London eye. The hotel itself is nice, modern and stylish and delivered its promise of 4 stars. We did have a slight problem when we went in â¬ we were told the check in time was 14:00 and we arrived shortly after this only to be told the room wasnâ¬"t ready. We had to wait around in the hotel lobby with our bags for an hour before the room was ready. During the week, this is a ridiculously pricey stopover for those with expense accounts to burn. During the weekend, however, business customers flee to their Surrey estates leaving the hotel open to plebs like me. For not too much money, then, ordinary folk can marvel, goggle-eyed at how the rich do live.

As a birthday treat for my girlfriend, I booked the Romance Package - champagne (good champagne, too), rose petals scattered on the bed at turn-down, candle-lit bathroom (again with the rose petals), what may or may not have been Molton Brown toiletries and breakfast in bed.

The room we were in was well-designed with a lounge area at one end, separated from the bedroom by the bathroom (good news if one of you wants to watch some TV while the other sleeps). The furniture was modern and very comfortable, a bit Conran but not quite as crisply designed.

The only problem we encountered was a minor one - we ordered their "Movie Deal" package, consisting of popcorn and ice-cream to go with one of the pay-per-view movies on offer. This arrived after the movie had finished and it was obvious that there was only a skeleton staff at weekends. Having said that, the staff that were there were very apologetic and assured us that we would not be charged. The ice cream was delicious and went very well with the popcorn.
