This is a tricky one to classify - sometimes I wonder how well the trusted places categories really work.

This is a simple place - a small list of good wines by the glass and some of the best of Borough markets meat and cheeses as plates to snack on. There is a longer list of wines to buy, and during the day some food - a perfect spontaneous picnic pitstop.

Yes, the seating is limited, the space rather bare (no loo!) and the staff sometimes busy - but it is still a rather charming place to have a drink after work. There is a passion for wine and produce that you won't get with a house white at a pub, and a simplicity that makes this a great place to go before dinner, on the way home, or during the day.

I come here to ogle the bottles, this place is pornographic in the way that classy Hardware shops are with its own Bacchanalian zinger twist. One gawp at the window display and you know your heading into somewhere special with a sense of boozy humour to boot. There are a screed of brands of Absinthe in window, likewise with any other tipple you can think of. Theres real history when you walk into this building. In the 18th century it was a bagnio frequented by members of the Hellfire Club, today its a vibrant hive of another sort. The stairs are steeply angled as if to keep out nasty stuff. Inside is a well filled treasure trove with herbs, spices, condiments and frozen sea foods at the back. Tea, rice and all sorts of other goodies in the front. Staff here are friendly - well as friendly as it gets in Chinatown. Overall the produce here is pretty darn good and prices are reasonable. It gets busy here with long queues running up to the back of the shop. Queues move fast - even if the baskets in front of you are loaded you'll get served pretty quick. Now that Chinatown is changing for the worse many of the great little supermarkets are going or worse being revamped into some slicked up, no-stock corner shops with nothing but snacks, sweeties and pills. See Woo is the cheapest in Chinatown, some of goods are past the sll by date - check carefully. Other than that they have everything here, a veritable panoply of goodies. In fact the amount of stock here is mind-boggling - they have everything from paper money for burning at funerals to tea, bitter melon, Abalone, sea cucumber, pig tail, fortifying liquors and herbs for soup. Upstairs is nearly always a madhouse, bustling and hustling. Downstairs is more peaceful - not many people go there to by plates, bowls, saucepans and cooking utensils. Found some delicious spicy sauces and biscuits in there. My little girl back home absolutely loves those Hello Kitty's snacks.

They do offer special offers for a range of products with some of them are on buy-1-get-1-free bargain, though those are about mostly 3-6 months from expiry. Tried a few and they are reasonably nice.

Service is unbeatable, in terms of a chinese grocery store. Amazingly, they have an English-speaking manager running the place!

Aromatic and pungent treasure trove of good quality coffees in the heart of Soho. This shop has been here for many years and has only had minor updates or â¬Üimprovementsâ¬". It is still a quiet, relaxed and old-fashioned little retail outlet.

Iâ¬"m not sure whether the â¬ÜAlgerianâ¬" accolade is still applicable, as it stocks coffees from around the world. There are plenty of blends to suit any taste, but the highlight here is the range of specialist and single estate coffees.

Worth trying is the dense and dark smelling Ethiopian coffee. Once youâ¬"re here, buy the beans, at least a whole pound, and store them in the freezer.

The shop has a â¬Ücolonialâ¬" feel to it and is a feast for the senses, including the eyes.

You will also find here every accessory you could possibly need to brew the best coffee at home.

Paxton & Whitfield are cheesemongers extraordinaire and if you love cheese or even have a passing fascination then you will love this shop.

The cheese experts there can help you to rustle up some intriguing new delights to savour and are happy to let you taste things.

A few of my favourites are The Stinking Bishop (obviously nothing to do with the name) and also Mimolette (apparently the champagne of cheeses - whatever that means!).

A wonderful place for a treat, a present or just an olfactory browse.

Other reasons to go:

- They have been in St James's for over 200 years, so they know the odd thing or two about cheese. This Paxton & Whitfield branch is over 100 yrs old!

I stopped in for falafel this evening, and it was excellent. For the centre of London it is cheap as chips. OK, so a can of coke is about 1.50, but a pitta stuff to bursting with falafel, tahini, crunchy salad and a bowl of good chilli sause was about a fiver.

The falafel themsleves were wonderfully crunky on the outside, and nicely chunky on the inside, not the lump of deep fried hummus or Mc Chickpea Nuggets that you sometimes get.
