National Gallery: a delight.
If you followed my advice and went to the National Portrait Gallery, you should not miss the other gallery around the corner. Late opening on Wednesdays afternoons, it is a great place to go and relax after work (especially if you work in the city centre). Outside, there is Trafalgar Square, always full of tourists. However, the interior is very peaceful.

Great old masters inside. Do not miss the Van Eycks (especially the Arnolfini marriage), the Christ by Piero della Francesca, the impresionists, the sunflowers by Van Gogh, the nympheas by Monet. A delight for every sense (for free).

Compulsory visit if you are visiting London. The Museum is free, so it is great if you are squint at the end of the month. You can begin by visiting the permanent collection, which includes some great portraits since 15th century onwards. Do not miss the twin sisters with their daughters (both of them born on the same day), 15th century. Afterwards, you can navigate from great 19th century portraiture to contemporary artists, such as Bacon. I love the photography section, with great pictures of the Beatles, very natural style.
They are now hosting the BP Portrait Award, a great way to see what contemporary art is doing right now in terms of respresenting people.

Their cafÃ© offers good quality coffee and hot chocolate. Wine as well.

The Royal Academy of Arts is located on Piccadilly, and is a very good art gallery. It has a permanent collection, â¬Ühighlights from the Royal Academy Collectionâ¬", housed in the John Madejski Fine Rooms, which is free to visit and worth doing so, and in addition there are several exhibitions on at a time which can be extremely good â¬ although you do have to pay for the special exhibitions. I recently went to a Lucas Cranach exhibition there which was very enjoyable indeed. With shelves stacked full of 7"s behind the counter, Sister Ray is everything a record shop should be. Filled with obscure breaking bands' debuts and classics, you'll definitely find what you want. The best thing about this place is the staff, because they're always ready to help you find that single you couldn't find in the nearby HMV or newly christened zavvi (but why would you be there anyway?), and are quick, polite and are always willing to help. Also puts on the occasional instore performance to entertain customers, which is how I first found out about this place.
