The Establishment - Miracle in Parson's Green by chrisp

But after a painfully slow and uncomfortable journey from work last night I was rewarded with an unexpectedly delightful meal in The Establishment, a groovy new gastropub just opposite the tube station.

As often happens in those anticipatory moments before the food arrives, I found myself searching for clues to the standard of the evening ahead in other areas. The bar menu is lovingly crafted and contains a number of interesting sounding house specialities along with the tried and tested classics. My Martini was served in an ice-cold glass, the rim rubbed with lemon rind and with just a hint of Noilly Prat - as good an example as you're going to find outside of the top hotels, in fact; clearly someone behind the bar knows exactly what they're doing. Service, it almost goes without saying, was great and although hardly rushed off their feet on a relatively quiet Tuesday evening the staff were welcoming and eager to please. I should also give a mention to the impressive décor, which was incredibly tasteful 70s beige and bold wooden detailing. So far, so very very good.

And the food, thank the gods themselves, lived up to my expectations and then some. Starter of pig's trotter fritters with homemade gribiche was even better than that served at the Prince of Wales in Putney. Bursting with flavour and containing a delightful series of textures, the crispy delicate exterior broke on the bite to ooze meat juices and delicious fatty chunks of trotter. I broke into a giddy smile as the pork dribbled down my chin. Brilliant stuff.

Next was more beautiful pork - a crispy chunk of crackling sat on top of a sweet chunk of cheek and a flat roll of bacon-style belly. Alongside, a gorgeous moist slab of more belly, and a scattering of buttery glazed carrots set in creamy white polenta provided vegetable accompaniment. This is the pork dish that so-called pork expert Tom Ilic couldn't pull off in his restaurant in Battersea, but here it was done superbly and with each element cooked to a very high standard.

Maybe - and I have to put in some sort of disclaimer in case you go around thinking The Establishment is the restaurant equivalent of the second coming of Christ - maybe I was very very lucky with my choices, because a companion's fishcake (from the cheaper bar menu) was only good, not as heart-stoppingly brilliant as my two courses. And we didn't try the desserts either, so maybe they contain rusty razor blades or are laced with arsenic. I mean, there must be some reason why this place isn't packed to the rafters all day every day.

So as you will have gathered by now, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Establishment to anyone willing to brave the District Line and head out to Parson's Green. It is small and cosy with fun decor that makes you feel like you are on the back streets of Italy - complete with fake window ledges scattered along the walls.

They have a novel way of serving pizzas if you order more than one per table. Instead of getting a single round pizza your orders are merged together in an uber-pizza in a rectangle shape. Suddlenly 2 or 3 pizzas look huge as they come on a giant wooden platter that sits in the middle of the table. And 4 pizzas well it starts to look like a monster!

No question that this is a tasty and fun place with a relaxing and non chain atmosphere (a little deceiving as their card tells me they have 6 places in London as part of the Made in Italy Group).

I would have given it 4 if the staff were just a little friendlier...however, I suppose it is being an authentic Italian ;-)

It get's v busy so worth booking esp on prime evenings like Thurs/ Fri.I ummed and erred about whether this was a 3 or 4 star experience.

Certainly Napule is a charming Italian Pizza place. I am about to make their day. Anyway, the Yo! Sushi chain is a classical in the London landscape, with a great diversity of sushis, in a vibrant environment. Not very original nor authentic, although most of their chefs are Japanese, but you cannot criticize the food. It is fresh and tasty. The venue in Fulham is extremly convenient as it is right next to the cinema, so you can treat yourself in many manners on a night out. Pricewise... It can be expensive but if you control yourself it's alright, especially when they publish their offers. Always worth peeping on their website or on Handbag.com for voucher. Thanks for pointing that out guys... :)

I feel as though I (or should I say we) have discovered a little gem.

Trip 1: Dinner on Thursday night
We (2 girls with a good appitite) arrived at 7:30 to a fairly quiet resturant. The staff were very attentive and allowed us to poor over the menu for an extended amount of time. Still undecided on what to order due to so many good options, we opted to share some crispy duck pancakes to start (about £6.40 for 1/4 duck) while we munched on the delicious entree we took the opportunity to watch other peoples dishes go by. Just when we had almost decided on our order we saw some cripsy noodles go past and decided since it looked huge, that we'd share that after realising how filling our entree was. We were delighted with our choice.. crispy beef noodles (approx £5.??) - although the serve was not as generous as I first thought we were stuffed and left very satisfied.

Trip 2: Dinner on Friday night
After such a good experinece the night before, I just had to go back to Huy Hoang again and try some of my favourite Vietnamese dishes... it was a lot busier and by the time we left the resturant was near full but the staff still delivered great service. We ordered some fried mushrooms (approximately £2.80) to start (picture to follow at some point), and a pork and prawn golden pancake (approx £5.40) both delishous.. For our mains I ordered a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup with beef (Approx £5.30 for a large).. which I decided would be the comparison dish... and they passed with flying colours.. it was maybe a bit small but full of flavour and a fresh lift. We also ordered a main of chicken cooked with lemongrass and chilli (approx £5.40 + £1.80 for rice) this dish was also fantastic... with amazing flavours.

In summary, if I had to make a complaint about this place it would only be that the servings appear small (but somehow always fill you up). The tables for two are a bit small too. That aside, although the prices are slightly more than what you pay around Old Street, I definitley think its worth it for those in the SW area who don't want to hike across town for some scummy food.

Great food, great service.. too many new dishes to try.. I'll be back agian.. and again :) I saw this place on Trusted Places and although I have walked past it many times, I had never noted that it was a Vietnamese resturant.
Sukho Thai Cuisine - Quiet, polite and ver very tasty by coldclimate

Review by coldclimate

Rating: 0.00
Tags: expensive, good value, thai
A few years ago now London seemed to suddenly be covered in Thai restaurants. No bad thing at all in my book. Sukho is very like many other Thai restaurants, very polite (very), quiet, and extremely good food.

A friend and I went without a booking on Friday night, and were seated easily enough. The menu contains nothing that unusual, and isn't vastly extensive, but everything we ordered was excellent. I stared with "fresh spring rolls", an interesting variation on the greasy deep-fried variety. These were much fatter, and cut into inch long slices, and not fried. Instead they were served cold, stuffed with cold cooked prawn and crab, with lemon-grass wrapped around them to hold them together. A thick peanuty-seameseed sauce came with them, which was good enough to justify dipping a craved cucumber decoration into once the rolls were finished. My friend had "traditional spring rolls", which were either whole king prawns wrapped in spring roll wrappers and deepened, or stuffed with bean sprouts and ginger. Excellent they were too.

Our main courses were pad Thai and a red Thai curry with king prawns and steamed rice. Unadventurous we admit, but once again, excellent. The pad Thai was chunky and not overcooked as is can often be. Many times it appears looking more like chow mein, but here the noodles remained their firm texture and apparently it was excellent. I didn't get a chance to pinch any.

My Thai red curry was deliciously spiced, with the sauce not been too hot, instead the heat came from sliced red chilies in the dish. These could easily have been sifted out by somebody who didn't want the heat, which is far preferable to having a sauce which contains the heat. The king prawns were huge and juicy, the veg' still crisp and holding its shape. The dish had obviously been constructed to order, rather than being served up from a Ban-marie as I had had it in other places. The fragrant steamed rice was wonderful, with a light jasmine scent and sticky whiteout being glutinous. It wasn't served in a shrink wrapped bundle fresh from the microwave either, as I have had it in one place.

The bill for two, included a couple of beers each, starter course and main, and a bottle of sparkling water was under ã60, making it far from the cheapest dinner out, but excellent value for money. The food was superb, the service impeccable, polite and friendly without being cloying. Our drinks rarely got lower than an inch below the rim, but I didn't notice them being refilled, it just happened.

Not somewhere to go with a group of 10 for a dinner party, not after a few beers, but a really great place to enjoy the food and catch up with somebody you've not seen in a long time. Whenever I take friends there, they are amazed by the outrageous and fun decor, the super friendly staff and the excellent service. The food is very good too. The one on York road is more fun in that it has opera singers that walk around the restaurant in the evening serenading the customers which is either romantic or highly amusing depending on your character.

Great as a party venue - you can climb up ladders to sit in throned private areas or have a huge table and take over the restaurant.

Even though it is inexpensive, if you are taken there you will not feel short-changed, the place has so much character that it is a must see. You will leave wondering how they can survive with such a great menu whilst charging such small prices.

Little Bay is the perfect venue if you are strapped for cash. It's great fun as most people take part for about an hour.

At 10pm though the place turns into a pub / club like everywhere else in Fulham and loses all attempts at the Latin theme with top-40 music proudly played. Needless to say, we left then, as it suddenly got terribly loud, non-Latiny and smokey!

If you only arrive after 10pm you have to pay a £10 cover charge. It then becomes a fully fledged club, which is not our scene.

The cocktails were yummy. I am not much of a drinker, so don't know what's what often. I tried Silk Stockings... a coconut-y cocktail, and loved it! Went straight to my head though, but still loved it haha.

We had a party platter for 2, there was quite a bit of food on it, with all kinds of meats and vege snacks, and we were suitably stuffed! It cost £13.95.
If you are looking for a vibey South American Latin restaurant/bar, where you can eat a hearty meal and then have a dance afterwards, then this is the place for you! We had an enjoyable evening here, the food was great, service only okay, and the dancing was super!

Fiesta Havana has dance teachers who offer a complimentary salsa lesson for diners.
