The Swan looks fair, and the staff with which I had contact (manager excluded) were polite but how very, very, disappointing!

On the basis of the looks, I booked an area a few weeks before for my 30th Birthday (a milestone event) to entertain 30 â¬ 40 peopleâ¬¦..only to be phoned one week before the event (4 weeks after booking) to be told the area had been double booked and they would no long accommodate me and guests.

A more cynical than me person would say that â¬Üthe managerâ¬" had received an offer from which he thought he would receive greater financial custom

Either way, I was so disappointed to be finding an alternative venue so soon before the event that I feel all should know that if you book this venue this could happen to you!

A personal annoyance is that the manager didnâ¬"t have the consideration to phone me to cancel. Again, a more cynical person would say this was so â¬Üthe messenger would be shotâ¬". Either way, beware booking at the Swan!

For a cheap eat, good atmosphere, quick service and good food, I would always suggest Wagamama. They're everywhere, however, I'd suggest Wagamama @ Clink St on the south bank, 5 minutes from London Bridge station. Communal eating and the wide range of Japanese food makes the eating experience fun and the cheap price while put an even bigger smile on your face. The quality of food is not amazing but it'll do considering it almost could be considered a fast food chain. The Clink St branch is fresh and spacious a newly built under the arches of Cannon St rail bridge. It's ideally placed for pre / post drinks in the southbank and borough market area or even a pre /post walk along the southbank riverside.

Swithins is a mixture wine bar, restaurant and cafe. On the ground floor is a small wine bar with high tables and stools. The wine is fairly standard but the staff are lovely and make the place seem much more elegant than it is. Behind the wine bar is a fish restaurant. The food is good here although quite expensive. Again the staff are excellent. Downstairs is a much more relaxed wine bar/Italian cafe area. There are tables to sit and eat and higher ones with stools to have drinks and snacks. The staff are happy to reserve areas for groups and there is even a private room which can be booked for larger parties. The staff are lovely, friendly and helpful but the food is often disappointing. The pastas are quite good but the sandwiches are really nothing special and quite overpriced for what they are. We had a pleasant evening at Cantina although it lacked a little atmosphere due to the "largeness" of the place. Food lacked a bit of excitement but this could have been because I opted for the set menu. If I went again I would order differently and from main menu. My friend ordered steak from it and said it was very good. If you happen to be in or around the area or going to the vinopolis museum its worth a look but would probably not book there otherwise. Located near Mansion House station just of Queen Victoria Street, I eat here regularly and this is one of my favourite Thai restaurants in London. Part of the Thai Square restaurants chain, this is one of their best. Though in the City and with a setting that looks fairly formal, the atmosphere is much more friendly. The quality of food is always excellent and there is an extensive and tasty selection of vegetarian food. My regular choices include Tom Yum Hed soup (clear mushroom soup with lemongrass) and the Tofu with ginger and chilli served with plain rice. Quite a large place downstairs, Chairs were abit uncomfortable, waiters/staff were helpful. Food was very nice although it took a while for our order to come, evan though the place wasn't that busy. Open since 1889 (with much of the simple interior decor unchanged -I am told), Sweetings has the reputation of being a great, unpretentious City institution when it comes to serving simple but excellent fish.

I work just around the corner and although it is only open at lunchtime from Monday to Friday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and doesn't take any reservations, it looks always packed whenever I pass by.

When I went there yesterday with a colleague, the guy who was sitting to my left and who advised me of what fish to try was a businessman who has been coming to Sweetings for 27 years!

The fish, of which they have a good variety, is always cooked just right. The supplier of the restaurant is actually one of the three owners. So, no compromise on the quality.

I had a delicious vegetable soup and then a plaice fillet, simply served with a perfect dressing and some chips. I also had a classic English pudding: crumble with ice cream, which, as the fish they serve, is of a high standard and delicious! They also have a good wine list: we tried a glass of Chablis: perfect with the plaice!

The service is good and quick and the staff is very friendly, as is one of the owners/managers, which we chatted with on our way out. The waiters' attention is good, in spite of the busy (and paradoxically relaxed!) atmosphere of the place. The restaurant has large windows overlooking a courtyard, which, on a sunny day, makes the experience very enjoyable.

At Sweetings, they don't even serve coffee, to ensure that customers do not overstay at the end of their meal and, thereby, allowing who's ever waiting a chance to have lunch, as there will always be someone waiting to take your.....ahum!...plaice -sorry, couldn't resist the (fishy) pun!...waw!...double pun, in fact! ;O)

The soup (£3.50), the plaice fillet (£13.50) with chips (£2.50), the dessert (£5.00) and the glass of Chablis (£6.50) total £31!...in the City!
