It looks like your typical 'greasy spoon caf' - complete with formica tables and squeezy bottle of tomato ketchup. But they serve really good value and delicious simple Thai and Brit food - stir frys, currys, egg & chips etc. So you can eat well for under a fiver and the helpings are large. The Thai staff are friendly and efficeint - which is just as well as its often busy and you somethimes need to wait for a table. More the sort of place to go for breakfast or lunch - but I think they are open until early evening.Maries Cafe is on Lower Marsh, close to Waterloo station. And it looks like just that kind of shop too, on the corner or a cobbled street, with little panes of glass and everything beautifully presented and tied up in ribbon. The cakes are very very good, and there's a huge variety. They also produce various breads, scones, pastries and sweets. At lunch, there's often a queue out the door for sandwiches and salads - a small menu that changes daily. It's not cheap, but they use excellent ingredients and you can really tell.I used to walk passed this bakery/confectioner on my way to and from work, peering in longingly at the delicious cakes in the window, like a 19th century street urchin.
Bonnington Cafe - Veggie Boho Heaven by LuluMcC

Over time it has become one of London's most recommended vegetarian restaurants.

The building is a bit spit and saw-dust in nature - but the walls are often covered in original art works and candle light illuminates the room as the night falls. The atmosphere is bohemian and laid back. Most nights there is some live music - usually from local musicians - and the whole feel is more like being in someone's home than in a restaurant.

Each night of the week the food is prepared by a different local chef. All the food is veggie and Thursday nights are vegan. In order to book you go to the Bonnington website and each month the email address of each chef is posted. You then contact the chef directly for your booking - its that homey! The place is usually heaving, so you do have to book ahead for Thursdays through to Sundays.

The food is always inventive and fresh. There is little choice on the menu but everytime Ive been its been terrific. Its not haute cuisine but what you don't get in style and sophistication you make up for in a home-cooking kind of way. The restuarant has no licence but you can take your own drinks in and if you forget there is an off licence opposite. Best of all the menu is consistantly under £10 for three courses. Not a reflection on the quality of the food but rather on the community nature of the restaurant.

If you want a "different" night out, a bit laid back, a bit boho and someone almost no one you know will have heard about head to the Bonnington Cafe. It's so great I wish I could keep it a secret...but I can't resist telling you.

The Bonnington Cafe is truly an aquired taste but if you can get past the fact that upon turning into Vauxhall Grove you think that your destination might be a squat, then you will are promised a unique night out.

The Bonnington Cafe was originally set up as a kitchen for the use of local squatters who inhabited the buildings nestling around the square. I gained 15 delicious kilograms in 3 years and feel there is a hole in my soul now that I can no longer support them. Bacon and mushroom for my hangovers, black pudding to give me mega power to cope with an afternoon and bubble & squeak to fill the void. The man sized sausage and bacon filled rolls still give me a soaring feeling. All this english greasy spoon served by oriental folk in a cafe with a wild west feel.
Cafe Van Gogh - Cafe in a Church by walid

Yesterday we went there to meet with a contact of ours and discovered Cafe Van Gogh which is found at the corner of Brixton Road and Mowll Street. First of all the Cafe seems to be coming out of the church that surrounds it. What is great is that you have an interesting "church" architecture which enables the cafe to have access to a small pleasant court yard garden.

From the sound of it most of the staff that work at Cafe Van Gogh are of Italian origin, which explains why there lasagna looked quite tasty. The people who were there when we arrived seemed of all ages and lead me to believe that you would feel comfortable coming here with your baby as you would with a few friends to sip a glass of wine. As far as I know no such place really exists around Oval so I would recommend this place if you're in the area.Whenever I go around the area close to Oval tube station I find that the lack of interesting local coffee shops is quite acute.
