Three of us ordered dinner no starters,we waited 20 minutes for our food when it came the roast lamb i ordered was roast beef with 1 slice of lamb under the beef? My friend ordered sea bass which came complete with head and eyes and had not been filleted this came with a creamy sauce, served with brussel sprouts and carrots and a side salad? and was also slighty undercooked i guess this was due to the fact it had not been filleted and cooked to quickly.
After our meal we waited another 15-20 minutes for desert menu as all the staff including chef were all sitting outside smoking, they did look at us through the window and smile now and then,in the end i went to the bar and got my own desert menu, wish i had not bothered the desert was over priced and tastless. We also froze as the doors were open and no heaters it was january!!Myself and friends family have been using the gate for a few years now and seen it change hands and menus.
I was really dissapointed the last few visits. The food is very authentic and of great quality. There are the same old faves for those that want them but also some great regional dishes, such as the pork belly stew that are worth a try. I have never had a bad meal at this place in all the years I have been eating here and the loyalty you show to the restaurant is repaid by the owners with lovely friendly services, a welcoming owner(who always makes an effort to come over and say hello), complimentary dishes and quite frankly some of the best Vietnamese food I have eaten.
I haven't tried the Hoxton branch yet but if it is anywhere as good as Highbury I'm sure it's fab. So my expectations were high and when I entered the restaurant with its hanging lanterns from the ceiling, glowing lights, and pretty table cloths it looked like a good meal was about to be had.
However, althugh the menu seemed to offer tasty helpings of food what arrived was pathetic servings of tasteless meat and rice. Even the 'platter' we started with, which I was worried might be like the usual feast of a meze, was enough for one person!
So I'm afraid we were all very disappointed, the males I was with even left the restaurant still hungry.
Think I'll be heading to the green lanes next time.I hate my first review to be a bad one but it had to be done.
This weekend I went to Iznik in Highbury Barn after reading a reccomendation in Time Out.
