It might have had something to do with the long walk, or the pouring rain, but when we walked into the peasant it was with some trepidation. It's quite a big space downstairs but it doesn't seem to be configured to hold that many people, with an enormous space taken up by the bar. The decor is pretty cool and the British Beer Festival that was on was a real beer drinker's delight. If the mark was for the pub alone it would have been a higher star rating.

We headed upstairs for a birthday dinner and the room was nice. The staff were a bit fussy and as it was so quiet (on a Saturday night), they kept trying to take away unfinished drinks etc. They were friendly enough but not inspiring.

Unfortunately it all fell apart with the food. The menu is really very attractive, with very posh sounding gastro pub dishes. Prices seemed to be that London gastro staple - Â£6-8 starters and Â£13-16 mains. The donwside of an exciting menu is that if the food doesn't match it, you have a massive case of over-promising and under-delivering. Now i don't want to see that unless it's means that the annoying girl/guy is being fired by Sir Alan.

Wood pidgeon cassoulet was just a a bit of a cheat. The beans were tasty and the wood pigeon tender, but it wasn't confit'd...so it wasn't really a cassoulet. Don't call it a cassoulet then! The young lady's oxtail was meltingly good. Others had oysters and such like and seemed happy enough.

The wheels came off with the mains. Braised beef brisket was a massive hunk of dry beef without enough juice, fat or sauce to keep the jawbones interested. The birthday girl's Balmoral venison was so tough that it all got left behind. This came from the Queeen's deer, people! I mean...Libby...what happened there? Did you hang the beast at all? Did Phillip do the butchering himself? I'll stop there...before I incriminate myself any further.

So all round not good enough. But the upshot is I get to give my first 2 star review. I've eaten so much good food recently that I was worried it would never happen and you'd start thinking i was a bit soft. Definitely one of the best places to eat around Exmouth Market, and this is saying something in an area where gastropubs seem to pop up every 20 minutes!
The ambience is friendly, and manages to pull of the shabby chic trick, being cool without lapsing into pretentiousness. Consistently fantastic food, and in my experience great service (even when busy). The food is affordable and the portions are generous, so much so that I often miss out on the fantastic traditional desserts on offer (the bread and butter pudding is one of the best puddings I have ever encountered)!
Definitely one of the best places to eat around Exmouth Market, and this is saying something in an area where gastropubs seem to pop up every 20 minutes!

This is another large Wetherspoons pub in central London (on Chancery Lane, so as a previous reviewer has commented, populated with members of the legal profession).

The interior is very grand. Get a table upstairs on the balcony, overlooking the pub if you can. However, this pub definitely isn't posh - it's a Wetherspoons! The beer is reasonably priced and well kept, but as with all Wetherspoons, it gets very very crowded, especially on a Friday evening.

The food is typical Wetherspoons fare, cheap and cheerful (and a little bit greasy).

Tiny, atmospheric little drinking den down a hidden alley near Holborn. It's centuries old, and therefore is of interest to those wanting the "I drank in London's oldest pub" badge, but they do a pretty good pint of interesting ale, and the bar snacks (sausage rolls and scotch eggs), although I didn't try them myself, looked good too. Clientele is a mix of suits from the Holborn offices and curious tourists, but everyone seems to get on well enough. The original and as far as I'm concerned still the best of the Match Bar mini-chain. When Match first opened, back in the late 90s, the Â£5.50 martinis were a revolution in reasonably-priced, lovingly-crafted drinks. Nowadays you can get pretty good cocktails in far more places and Match has lost its edge slightly, but it remains a cool, intimate place to enjoy an expertly made gin martini or the stunning Match Spring Punch. This classy open-plan bar / restaurant serves both cocktails and a wide variety of pan-asian cuisine.

Not far from either Farringdon or Barbican tube stations, Cicada is located on St John Street in Clerkenwell.

The restaurant has an excellent atmosphere and a classy, relaxed feel, as the other reviews will tell you. The food is of an extremely high quality and the service is always friendly (although occassionally a little slow!)

The red room is used for private functions and events and can seat up to twenty-four people.

The room is decorated in an appealing minimalist style, with it's own private bar and setaing area. Private dining and canape menus are available, along with tailor-made Cocktail Masterclasses among others for the more adventurous.

A tiny pub situated in the backstreets of Farringdon off the Clerkenwell road this dingy little pub is full of character and arm chairs. The night I went was a night of unsigned bands with a wide variety of music from rappers to screamo, indie to metal, it was all there. The bar staff were friendly and egged on the bands in a supportive way which gave the pub a communal atmosphere. Recently redone up, the Wilmington is now a lively place with good music, comfy sofas, nice staff and a pretty decent menu (the Pie Minister pies especially) and a good range of beers too. My usual dining companion (aka AM) recently started working in a new part of town, and came home one evening raving about a bar called the White Swan just up the road from his office. Apparently it had a great sounding restaurant too. Ok, I was sold, and a table was booked for dinner the following week.

Meeting AM at the office we wandered up to the White Swan for a drink before our meal. I immediately liked this modern pub, with its welcoming bar area, complete with a massive mirror and a good variety of mounted animal heads. There is a small mezzanine level over the bar, offering additional seating, while the restaurant is up on the first floor.

I was equally impressed with the restaurant. The room is stylishly decorated, with wood and caramel tones, attractive (but not so comfortable) chairs and although there are plenty of windows it still had a very warm feel about it, which was perfect on the cold, wet evening we visited. Oh, and it has a mirrored ceiling too. Service was very friendly and professional, yet relaxed, which was perfect for the environment. There is an impressive wine list, with a great range of wines from around the world and a good selection by the glass as well.

To start, AM had the Braised oxtail with parsnip puree and roast garlic, and I had a couple of tastes. Loved the presentation and the comforting flavours. Main course was excellent - we both ordered the Roast breast of pheasant with boudin noir, creamed bacon and savoy cabbage, chestnuts, fondant potato, caramelised apples and Calvados jus. It sounds a bit much doesn't it, but it was superb. All of the facets of the dish came together deliciously - I even enjoyed the Boudin noir, which is blood sausage.

Dessert was less successful. We ordered the Steamed chocolate pudding with vanilla bean ice cream, and the Plum tarte tatin. The choc pudding was nothing special, and the tarte tatin was unfortunately undercooked - the pastry was half raw. We had been warned that it would take at least 15 minutes to prepare, so I was a bit surprised when our desserts arrived sooner than that.

Our waitress was devastated when she saw the half eaten tarte tatin and immediately knew what the problem was. She apologised and didn't charge us for it, nor one of the glasses of wine - though that may have just been an error! I've been wanting to go to the Hat and Feathers for two reasons, one it was lovingly restored by craftsmen, well that's what I thought each day I passed by when it was being re-built, and two the ambiance of a traditional local pub. Well I was dissappointed on both accounts. The exterior seems to have been restored well but inside it's all very faux pine/orange. There wasn't a traditional pub feel inside. I'd booked to dine at 1 up in the restaurant. We were expected, thankfully as there were 4 christmas lunches booked in. The decor is lovely and the tables are well set and not too close together. Plenty of space to walk around. Menu's are handed to us and the fare really pleasingly varied. We'd chosen almost immediately but no one came to take our order for some time, probably about 15-20 minutes. When they did they were attentive and pleasant, our drinks were served and we continued talking. After a long while our drinks depleated and still no food; watching the other diners and they too were waiting a long time for their food. It arrived almost 45 minutes after sitting down. We hadn't had a starter. (Most of my lunch hour is now over.) The food was marvellous and really tasty exactly as the menu. The side orders were ample, but the Winter vegetables weren't very appealing, looks wise they were all shrivelled up, tasted fine though. We took our time but were finished by about 20 minutes later, it's nouvelle, so not much on the plate. We then waited again for ages to order our pudding, they didn't have one of the listed deserts so another was chosen, we waited again for the pudding to appear, it's now nearly 1 hour 40 mins since coming in, the pudding appears and we eat and ask for the bill. A full two hours to be served lunch! The food was great and I didn't say anything about the wait. But if you are going here please leave plenty of time to be waited on, they are willing and probably working their little socks off but I didn't have 2 hours for lunch. It was Â£85 for two with only 1 water and 1 beer. This is mine and my work mates after work, lets have a drink bar! Great selection of people, all different genres of work, you have your media crowd, financial, PR, all spliced iwth the clubbers heading to Fabric and Turnmills due to it being a stonethrow from the tube station.

You can either chill on a sofa and head home or get ready and have a dance to the DJs and just start your night at Ember.

Staff are nice, helpful and friendly.

The Crown Tavern is an excellent spot for a pint after a long day of work. I agree with Duncan's review below, but it won't matter soon as there will be smoke free London on 1st July. It could get busy especially on Thursdays and Fridays, go right at 5 to secure a table.

Also patio is an illusion as half the outside tables are from the lil sandwich shop next door, you'll be asked to move after 5:30pm.The Crown Tavern is an excellent spot for a pint after a long day of work. First found out about this little gem when my mates mate was dj'ing there for the night. What started off as a quite night out for a drink or two ended up with all three of us at Fabric afterwards talking nonsense till the early hours. Don't let the small size fool you, this is a perfect spot to go and have some drinks, its not pricey and the people inside are very friendly. I've only been there on Saturdays but the music is always very nice, perfect for warming up and getting in the mood ! :-)First found out about this little gem when my mates mate was dj'ing there for the night. Usual sort of Wetherspoons pub, great beer selection (especially generous guest lager selection too) and solid nosh. Enter the downstairs pub and there is little you can order. This direct menu is a metaphor of its food: simple and direct.

Roast gammon, roast beef or roast pork; white or brown bread; apple sauce, mustard or horsadish. Combine them as you like wash them down with a pint of ale. What else would you need to be happy being so close to Smithfields?

There is also a restaurant upstairs; everybody says how great their breakfasts are. But book in advanced... otherwise you will end up like myself, running for an hour at 5:30 in the morning to get hungry for breakfast just to find out there is room.
