The restaurant is very light and airy and a pleasant place to eat. The fish and chips is excellent. Also very good is the steak burger with parfait of foie gras. I have not had the fish cakes have also had good reports of these. The price is slightly above average pub food but not too bad for this area and this type of restaurant and is overall OK value. There is a nice patio area outside the front to eat which is very nice when the sun is out. This is a great place to go for a nice plate of fish and chips. OK if you are looking for a predictable pub chain feel, but it does not offer much else really. Serves all the normal type of beers, lagers and pub snacks. Quite light and spacious but not a massive amount of atmosphere unless it is very busy, although I have only seen it busy once or twice at the right times. Pretty obviously placed so not a bad place to meet someone who does not know where they are going, I often use it for this. This is a fairly standard pub on the kings road, nothing special really when there are loads of other places to chose from around here.
Builders Arms - In Need of Renovation by chrisp

However, ask people to name their favourite restaurant, and you will probably be surprised how little the two overlap. A good meal can be a fluke, a moment in time that captures an emotion or relationship, a fortuitous confluence of good times and good company. A favourite restaurant has to be earned, and relies far more on rational concerns about quality of the cooking and competence of the service. Anywhere that produces a stunning meal one day and an apalling one the next will surely not last long, because the restaurant-going public are not gamblers. When spending a portion of their hard-earned cash, consistency is king. This is why the Fox and Hounds is a good restaurant; you can bring along friends and family time and time again and you are rarely if ever disappointed. And it is why the Builder's Arms is not.

In October I had a very pleasant meal at a (then) brand-new tapas joint called Pinchito near Old Street. Perhaps it was the novelty of the new, or the zest of the chefs for their new joint, but the odd niggle wasn't enough to detract from the fact that this was a competent establishment turning out fresh and tasty food. Zoom forward a few months, and that lovely bowl of fluffy light calamari had metamorphosed into a horrible dark-brown greasy mess, and what was once a fresh and neat intepretation of tomato bread (tomato pulp served separately with a little spoon) was now unevenly cut baguette wiped with tomato and thrown onto a plate. Pinchito has gone downhill, and I can no longer recommend it with enthusiasm.

Based on my most recent visit, I'm sorry to say that it seems the same malaise has overcome the previously excellent Builder's Arms in Chelsea. Last time, I had what I believe is the best Steak and Guinness pie it is possible to get hold of in London. In fact it was so good I made a special mention of it to the waiter, who didn't seem at all surprised and said that they got many people saying the same thing. This time, however, there was no pie on offer at all. Instead, the menu was geared towards traditional Sunday roasts and a few light seafoody bites for starters. We began with crabcakes and scallops, both of which were decent enough but failed to excite. The scallops were well cooked and had a good crust, but didn't taste of a great deal and sat on top of a huge mound of pea purée which smothered a miniscule sliver of crispy ham. Crabcakes were underseasoned and uninteresting, just big balls of filler that hardly tasted of crab at all.

The best you can say about the main course was that it contained good quality lamb and was not overcooked, but the quality of the other ingredients ranged from mediocre to very bad. Potatoes were crispy to the point of teeth-breaking but fortunately there were only two very tiny pieces. Roast parsnip was actually burned to a crisp - yes that's it on the picture, peeking out from behind the flabby boiled carrots in all its charred glory. Cabbage was alright, but could not redeem the rest of the dish. In fact you can learn all you need to know from that picture - this was a sloppily presented, sloppily cooked plate of food.

We didn't stay for desserts. It appears that what was once a solid, professional establishment has allowed itself to slip into mediocrity. But the whole experience just goes to underline my point - that running a consistently decent restaurant is not easy, and those places which do manage reliably good food without resorting to cutting corners are rare things indeed. I may visit the Builder's Arms again, and I may have a good meal, in fact I hope I will. But this does not make it a good restaurant. They're a long way off earning that.Ask many people to name their favourite meal, and the answer you receive will most likely influenced by memories of old holidays, old friends and many factors often far removed from the quality of the food and service at the time. Nowadays, I'm pretty sure the only qualification for the term gastropub is that you have a menu which: (a) contains at least one item with chorizo, and (b) where the description for Bangers and Mash has been rewritten to read "Fresh English Pork Cumberland Sausage with Roasted Garlic Puree and Sweet Onion Jus."

I guess what I'm saying is there's a fine line between pretense and reality, and Lots Road is on the right side of that line.

First things first: Lots Road makes a great hamburger. Not only that, but asking that it be cooked a certain way (i.e. rare) is not a futile exercise... the burger will come back the way you requested it. Seems simple, but I can't tell you how very exceptional this is in London.

The rest of the menu varies, but I've been several times, and as of yet, nobody at my table has been served a clunker.

Service is extraordinarly nice and attentive, and they even bent over backwards to get my visiting mom's absurdly complicated and obscure drink order right.

The only caveat is that they have some kind of chocolatey treacle pudding that they advertise as something you must not miss, which advertisement is false. It's not that this dessert is horrible, it's actually just OK, but rather it's a case of the build-up setting expectations too high and then the actual product being disproportionately mediocre when contrasted against the now-elevated expectations.

I guess the only other caveat is that from Thursday to Saturday, I'd strongly recommend you book in advance.

But it's good, and the prices are reasonable. And even if you don't live in the neighbourhood (Chelsea Pier), you've certainly travelled farther for worse food.Gastropubs in London have evolved to the point of ubiquity... if you can't find one in your neighbourhood, you're probably too drunk.

However, the popularity of the category has predictably led the term to become meaningless. It kind of achieves this, and the ambience is not too bad. However, the clientele it attracts leaves a lot to be desired. Its full of young City drunkards out on the pull and the music is definitely lowest common denominator stuff. Its the kind of place that draws in the post-last orders crowd. Decent enough, but nothing special. The Po Na Na chain of clubs tries to conjure up the mystical atmoshere of North Africa with its random collection of Moroccan stuff, heavy velvet drapes, mirrors and dim lighting. Unfortunately the Duke of Clarence was full and I can understand why it has both a light, airy and comfortably looking atmosphere to it. I did return a few days after that day, when France won, and my initial view of this place was confirmed. It is a nice place to have a cool refreshing beer in your hand for a lazy afternoon.Have to admit that I didn't stay in this pub very long as I was with a group of friends desperately looking for a pub to watch the France-Portugal Football World Cup game.
