Hunting for a good central London pub if you're not a resident can be a bewildering and ultimately futile experience. You end up sipping flat warm beer knowing that there is better out there whilst weeping gently in the corner.

That's why I was so happy to be introduced by an old friend to this gem in the very heart of London, yards from Trafalgar Square. My heart skipped a beat as we crossed over the road from Charing Cross to Chandos Place to this bijou drinking hole that is 100% pub, without the prefix "gastro" and hurrah for that. There is still a real place for uncomplicated traditional boozers that deliver first class real ale, ciders and lagers and leave faux fine dining to others.

Judging by the brisk and often hectic trade it's cheery bar staff were coping with - lots of others say "aye" to that also. The 6 real ales were proving very popular, with Harvey's Best Bitter being the pick of the bunch. Delicious proper sausage baguettes were being used as gastronomic mops to soak up the beer by workers that had come for a couple of beers after work and been beguiled into staying for more than was wise.

Who can blame them - this is a thoroughly likeable, convivial Free House serving superb beer that values it's patrons and works hard to deserve the plaudits is so richly deserves.Hunting for a good central London pub if you're not a resident can be a bewildering and ultimately futile experience. Over the years I've been in the area countless times but never knew Champagne Charlies existed (in the arches on Villiers Street). I was invited to a drinks do, and very good it was too (if rather a little chilly, which I'm finding a lot recently at pubs and restaurants, looking at the empty cold fireplaces longingly...).

CC is one of those great meandering cellar wine bars/resaurants that does what it says on the tin. It also has a feeling of being the place for assignations/illicit meetings, but whether or not that has anything to do with the sawdust on the floor I don't know.

The Wetherspoons chain has become well known for offering good beer at reasonable prices, and the Lord Moon is no exception. It always has a selection of real ales on tap, differing from week to week, with the occasional beer festival thrown in to boot. There's also a very decent range of ciders and drinks to suit every taste. It's a large pub, but even so it does get busy, especially directly after work as the civil servants pour out of Whitehall. While the food isn't the best quality, it's cheap and I like this place for meeting up with a big group of friends. For some reason this pub is usually chosen when I meet a couple of friends for beers and a chinese a couple of times a year.

I like the surroundings, it's convinient for Charing Cross & China Town and the interior is quite nicely decorated with loads of space, I don't know what sort of building it used to be but it looks like an old bank?

The downside is that the drinks are expensive, although there is a good range (particularly Hoegarden If I'm feeling rich) and the upstairs is always shut unless it's a Friday or Saturday.

The upstairs bar has a central gallery and you can sit round the outside and look down onto the ground floor. I don't understand why they don't let you sit there even if the upstairs bar is shut. You can always get served downstairs and take your drinks up?

Never eaten there and to be honest I probably wouldn't. The food is a bit pricey and looks much the same as Wetherspoons, which is a lot cheaper.

As previously mentioned this pub is unusual in that it is split in two on either side of the road. I've been told by a friend that it's the only pub in London like this.

The best way to get there from Charing Cross is to go down Villiers Street towards embankment and turn right under the tunnel. It's at the end up some steps.

Although this is normally a fairly quiet and small pub it has loads of character and an excellent selection of beer and wine. There is normally somewhere to sit and most of the seating is fairly private.

I've found that it's a good place to start the evening before going out to eat etc.

Go right to the bottom of this labyrinth of a pub and you find an almost empty vaults bar â¬ the is a great wine list, and nothing is overpriced. There is also a good amount of beer on tap. This place is a haven in central London if you want to escape chains, crowds, hustle and bustle. The place is great for the romantic, and the small groups. Down stairs is usually a quiet and secluded place to be. The staff are always friendly. But beware, on rainy days the vaults occasionally flood! We were going for a pub meal near Trafalgar Square but the First pub we tried didnâ¬"t serve food in the weekends, so we went for the next one and this worked out to be the best thing that could happen to the 4 of us whilst staying in London for a long weekend!
We found a very warm and welcome looking pub, with excellent and very reasonable priced food and drinks, especially the food was from outstanding quality. Last but not least we want to thank the very friendly and helpful staff. And a special thanks to the manager Andrew for his support on pointing out â¬SPlaces of interest, othethan the common published onesâ¬, the way he explained the secrets of how to use public transport in the city and for his patience in fulfilling the food-wise wishes an demands of two Dutch girls.

A traditional british city pub, with a good range of beers, the decor inside is different to what you would expect to find. Make sure you read the back of the menu to find out more about the history of this building, including how it used to be used to store coal for the Savoy Hotel.

The food is good, as it is at most Nicholsons pubs, of which this is one.

The breakfast is particularly good, as the pub is normally quiet in the morning. A great place to start your day with Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Leicester Square within easy walking distance.

a friendly establishment in which the publican is never far away and is known by her first name to at least 83% of the regular 'trade'. I visited this exclusive members' only lounge bar last week with a degree of curiosity mingled with scepticism, having read online reviews in which 'hate it' seemed to outnumber 'love it' by nine to one. Bungalow 8 is situated in a subterranean spot inside the stunning St. Martin's Lane Hotel in Covent Garden, notable for its interiors designed by Philippe Starck which combine an airy mixture of modern and baroque. Its more famous predecessor is the renowned Bungalow 8 in New York.

Firstly I should point out that I'm not a member, but had an invite to the after party of a film premier screened up the road, so my review is likely to be skewed by the fact that this wasn't a regular night at Bunglaow 8 (although I believe it was still open to regular members). The place is split into two bars on two floors, both absolutely tiny but decorated in very different and distinctive ways. The upper bar was already heaving by the time we arrived so we quickly took our cocktails downstairs, and snagged seats near the DJ. My immediate impression upon entering this downstairs bar was that I'd just walked into one of those paper carrier bags from Joseph - y'know, the iconic black and white striped ones? Freaky. Anyhoo, the cocktails were delicious, the mood laid back and friendly, the lighting pleasantly low, and the music ever so slightly cheesy. People felt comfortable enough to get up and start dancing between the tables or up and down the aisle, often by themselves. Personally I found the staff to be really friendly and upbeat, although that may just have been because my date knew them all.

One word of warning: those, like me, in strappy 3" heels should watch out for all the stairs - once you've managed to reach the bars without breaking any limbs, there's yet more to the toilets.

All in all, I had a good time, and would go again given the chance. Realistically, though, I'm unlikely to get past the doorman a second time without membership. This, I believe, is about Â£350 a year or, for visitors, Â£150 per night. This bar, as I understand it, is currently one of London's trendy hotspots, and well worth a mention for the decor alone. Situated in St. Martin's Lane Hotel (known for its stunning interiors designed by Philippe Starck which combine an airy mixture of modern and baroque) it is a long but spacious room running alongside the ground floor restaurant. As the name 'Light Bar' suggests, it combines lighting, shape and colours which are a visual feast for the eyes - in particular the brightly lit wall of wine glasses near the bar, which in some obscure way brings a free-standing chandelier to mind. I dare say this is no accident.

Alas, I was just passing through Light Bar on my way to the members' lounge bar, Bungalow 8, downstairs, but was left with the feeling that I'd like to go back sometime soon and stay long enough for a drink or three. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights "some of London's hottest D.J.'s are featured", according to their website. Ordering a burger at Ha Ha was a mistake. Maybe the other food is better?? There are few things in the food world that people seem to agree on, though what a burger should taste like is surely a consensus. Foccacia bun was a good idea, although it was stale, very stale. The meat equally disappointed - tough and chewy, unpleasant at best.
Nice concepts - poor food quality. The creme brulee was ok. No complaints on the service. Overall, it would have been ok if the burger meal hadn't been Â£10. This place has find memories for me, I took my now-wife here for our first date several years ago. i recently revisited it and it's lost none of it's appeal

The drinks are reasonably priced- not tourist driven at all, infact on a par with other places, and the inside bar is a nicely decorated place to sit and have a quiet drink. Next door is a nightblub area over the weekend and from my experience that tends to attract more of a tourist element, who are no doubt keen on the boat setting and its location smack bang opposite the London Eye

If the weather is nice it's lovely to go out onto the deck and sit and enjoy a drink and take in the Thames, with a nice view of the houses of parliament and watch the world go by

I haven't yet tried the food there but have friends who say the bar food they tried there was ok. From my visit it didn't look like they served food in the evening, so maybe a meal first somewhere then finish up there for a drink. A truly dreadful pub - AVOID AVOID AVOID! I visited the Round Table last night with friends. I was totally ignored by the barmaid who continuously served people arriving to the bar after me, when I spoke to her about this she simply smiled and carried on serving other people. I asked to speak to the manager, but he could not be bothered to come and speak to me as he was more interested in rolling cigarettes. Instead he tried to conduct a conversation with me from about 6 feet away. I told him that the barmaid was only serving her friends in preference to anyone else, his reply was that "they are not friends they are regulars" - as though that makes it any better! I told him it was a disgrace and that I had been waiting to be served over 15 minutes - his response, he called me a liar and closed the door of his office on me. This is a truly dreadful pub - it is quite clear that they do not care about providing a decent service because its the sort of pub that will always be busy because of its location. I told him that the barmaid was only serving her friends in preference to anyone else, his reply was that "they are not friends they are regulars" - as though that makes it any better! I told him it was a disgrace and that I had been waiting to be served over 15 minutes - his response, he called me a liar and closed the door of his office on me. This is a truly dreadful pub - it is quite clear that they do not care about providing a decent service because its the sort of pub that will always be busy because of its location. There's plenty of nice pubs in this area, don't waste your time or money with this one.
