It's a nice, friendly kinda place. I know not every one is a fan of Green King, but the Albert keeps a decent IPA and a good Abbots, though it's never the best pint in the world.

The staff have taken a bit of a beating in other reviews, but I've always found them pretty good. Not outstanding, but efficient and pleasant.

They have a lovely beer garden out back, which gets a lot of afternoon sun. Consequently it gets busy. But worth trying to get a seat out there if you can. Failing that you can take a seat out front. While you don't have the sunshine, this is still very pleasant. Princess Road is very pretty and very quiet so being one the street isn't so bad.

I have to admit that I'm not very impressed with the food. I had a distinctly overcooked and meagre rib-eye steak the other day. I am interested to try their pint, pie and picalily deal (all for a fiver) in the hope that it'll represent better value for money.

Still, as a place to go for a pint, especially on your way to/from Primrose Hill or Regenets Park, you could do far worse that The Albert.I quite like the Albert. It's in a most beautiful location, a little bit off the beaten track but surrounded by the "glamour" of Primrose Hill and but a stones through away from Regents Canal and the hustle and bustle of Camden Town.

There is very little hustle and bustle about the Princess of Wales though. It gets pretty busy in the evenings and at weekends but you never lose a sense of tranquility and peacefulness. It feels as though Time has just kicked back a little bit, but his feet on a stool and decided that it's time to just....relax.

The pub itself is beautiful. It is glass fronted with a generous provision of tables outside, though quite often The Dorris and I take to sitting on the kerb to bask in the sunshine.

Inside the pub is slightly reminiscent of Uncle Monty's living room in "Withnail and I", just without the cat - the walls are festooned with pictures, commemorative plates, horse brasses, all manner of delightful tat. Pot plants and flowers are everywhere and there is a snug with the most impressive collection of cookery and travelling books.

I've been visiting the Princess of Wales on occasion for several years, though it's only recently, having moved to the area and patronising this most excellent pub, that I have discovered that there is a Downstairs. A more cosy, intimate little spot I can hardly imagine, it's just charming. It leads out to a sunken beer garden which I've yet to spend much time in though I suspect it gets little sun.

They boast a really good selection of beer - London Pride and Adnam's Best appear to be the norm, and a regularly changing guest - most recently I've been enjoying an excellent Brain's beer, Milkwood.

They also boast a cask cider (not for the light hearted) and a decent selection of lagers. The wine always seems decent as well, though I've never seen a list as such.

The food is pretty standard pub fare, but done very well. I can highly recommend their burgers! I haven't eaten there on a Sunday before though I am assured that they do a very fine roast.
One of the best things about this pub is the music. On Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons they have a swing band, fronted by a trumpeter who I'm pretty sure is Humph's grandfather, who are thoroughly entertaining and very good. I've paid good money to see worse jazz bands in my time, they really are great and it's a wonderful, wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The clientele is pretty eclectic. Being where it is there is a smattering of the well-heeled, a fair number of youngsters and studenty types, a good local crowd but all are very friendly and welcoming.

It's such a comfortable, pleasant pub I fully intend to go far more often. In fact, seeing as I'm on holiday and it's nearly opening time I might just wander over for a pint now.I love the Princess of Wales. If it executes well, can it reach the heights? Or, much like the new Olympic Gymanstics scoring system, does it have a maximum potential score depending on its difficulty level? So many quasi-existential issues in this game...or something like that...

Anyway, The Queens does a job. Come lunchtime the day after a big event, it seems we head to this Primrose Hill pub for a burger. Occasionally in the past the service has been truly horrific, but the staff and the kitchen have changed in the last year and it's pretty decent these days.

The menu is fine but unexciting - burger, club sandwich, fish 'n' chips, cobb salad, linguine, chicken. Upstairs it feels a bit more gastro-y with posher mirrors and patterned upholstery, while downstairs has a more pubby feel. The wine list doesn't really get the blood pumping either.

So i'll stop skirting around the main issue. The food is fine. It isn't cheap and it isn't brilliant. The burger can be meaty and juicy. The club sandwich is fine. Chips with both are entirely reasonable. It's just that you might not bother unless you're worn out or hungover. Or if it's sunny - there's a tiny but lovely terrace upstairs which looks out over the park. You can munch your bread and meat combo and watch Liam Gallagher or Jules Oliver wandering past below.

But back to Winter...and lunch today. We left with the distinct feeling that the two high points of the meal were the feeling of stomachy fullness and the Frank Sinatra soundtrack which had everyone humming along. But that's okay and it hits 3 stars with flying colours. It's like it came 7th in the rythmic gymnastics - it's not going to get much time on the BBC highlights show. That said, we 'come fly-ed with me' all the way back to the office and the afternoon didn't look so bad at all.

Okay, now what's the plan if you go to a restaurant that is average and knows it, but does it well at least? On Friday and Saturdays however, it becomes one big venue with a cover charge for the whole place, so don't get caught out if you're just looking for a place to meet friends then move on.
The downstairs bar is basically a huge old pub with all the tables taken out, but other than the rather fancy branded windows it's worn and tatty, with scuffed black walls and posters for obscure bands blue tacked on every surface. It's got a lot of charm though and Matt and Greg, the managers are the type of publicans that make you want to come back time and again. The barstaff are friendly too, possibly due to aforementioned management and there's usually a healthy crowd of interesting looking alternative types hanging around. The upstairs room is less appealing, it's basically a large box of a room with nowhere to sit and nothing to look at, good if you're watching a band, but if you're looking for anything other than that, stay downstairs.
Obviously, it's not a place for the beer or food connoisseur, you'll get a fizzy pint and a box of Pringles and you'll like it, but it has a licence till 3am most nights, with various clubs and DJs throughout the week. If you're looking for a che-che, uptown sort of place forget it, if you're looking for the sort of grungy dive Camden is famous for, you won't go far wrong. The Barfly London is split into two venues during the week, the pub part downstairs and a music venue upstairs, so if you turn up on a weekday you can have a drink without paying to see the bands. It's a shame really, because a friend of mine who took me there said it was once quite fun, friendly and lively, and because its location near the heath would make it otherwise perfect for a Sunday afternoon pint. Luckily there are lots of other pubs within a few feet of here that do fantastic food, serve good beer and are friendly (three of which have fabulous beer gardens - I'm not going to name then for fear of mistakenly coming across as shamefully partisan - I'm not). The bar staff are really friendly which is a pretty standard description of staff but here they really seem to take an interest in you and chat with you whilst pouring you your pint. Secondly the pub has a very nice interior with tables and couches witch gives it a really very nice feel which is not always easily maintained in other pubs. The drinks are reasonably priced, neither expensive or cheap and they have a huge variety. All in all i really cannot reccomend this pub enough. If your every in the belsize park area then you shoudl reaally check it out, the nearest stations are belsize park and chalk farm which are both on the northern line. This is my favourite pub in the world (well out of the small number of pubs that i have been to in the entire world). When you enter, you go through a large, usually empty room (unless you get there late), and wonder if you have come to a bar, or what?! Then you turn the corner, and with relief see a bar with lots of people in, in the old Camden stables. It's really nice, I like the decor, I like the music, and the live music can be quite good. The staff have been really friendly anytime I have been there. It's become a firm favourite and semi-regular haunt.Proud doesn't give a good first impression. There was no connection between the name and the place... I wonder why it is called Monkey Chews...It was Wednesday evening and there weren't many people around.
Went there on one of the first sunny day of May 2008...
It was nice to sit outside for a change! We ordered chicken which was very tasty. Now its a fully fledged gastro pub with an upmarket twang. Beer prices are ok £3.30 pint, its the food thats the killer. Lovely grub dont get me wrong. but £13 quid for bangers and mash is excessive by anyones standards. In saying this the outside area is handy in the summer and i just love the layout of the place, its funky but not flashy. The staff are decent enough also. All in all a lovely place for a night out..Years ago it was just a downtrodden boozer situated on the cusp of a hill in NW3. Terrific grub - the cottage pie is my favourite and I've heard their Sunday roast is to drool for. Service is pretty good. The place is eclectically decorated, managing to look very cool and comfortable at the same time. At the back, there is an outdoors area where it's lovely to sit when the sun is shining and also a conservatory for when the sun isn't shining. Basically it's a lovely laid-back pub that will please everyone.Been here at least a handful of times (when in the neighbourhood) and it has never disappointed.
