The Bear - A lovely find by doolally

Went to the quiz night at The Bear on Tuesday for the first time with three friends. The pub was packed with all the tables taken in the front and back room and a pretty fun atmosphere.
I'd heard about it from my friend who has been going to eat and drink there for a few months. He's been trying to drag me down for a while but I was a bit dubious about it sitting opposite the bus garage on a pretty ugly stretch of road.
However....I was pleasantly surprised to find a traditional english boozer with a wide range of beers and wine and an interesting menu.
It's certainly not a standard pub menu with no burger in sight and an artichoke barigoule (watery stew anyone???) as one of the starters.
I had the venison which was delicious and my friends enjoyed thir food. We had a bottle of the house red which was a merlot at Â£13.00 and one of my bitter drinking friends enjoyed the three obscure ales they had, all priced at Â£3.20. Not my scene at all!!!
The service was very good. Our Polish waitress was friendly and they seemed to cope with the sometimes raucous quiz players.
All in all, a very enjoyable evening, and certainly some of the best food we've had in Camberwell, where the food scene just seems to be getting better and better.
We didn't win the quiz but we'll definately be back for next week.

Was out and about looking for a chinese restaurant, and i found a new chinese in Camberwell- even though they been there for 3 years. Walked in and got greeted with a nice warm smile and was immediately seated. Ordered my food and boy are their portion are big, a lot BIGGER and CHEAPER than Castle Dragon in Elephant and Castle. The food was great, ordered a whole steamed Sea Bass it tasted so fresh and it was boneless not like all other restaurants. All i can say is-being chinese ethnic myself, this is now one of the best chinese restaurant so far...!!!! I recommend this restaurant to all!

This used to be my local curry house and I was sorry to leave it behind when I moved away from the area but thrilled to discover that they delivered to my new address (despite having moved a good 20 minutes away and across the river). Ironically, I'd never eaten *in* the restaurant while I lived locally but they gave the place a drastic makeover a year or so ago and so I thought I'd give it a go. Great move. I now average a visit about once a month - even though it would be easier to get them to deliver. Really nice, authentic Thai food. The restaurant is run by Thais, who are very knowledgeable. There is a lot to choose from in the menu, and service was prompt and friendly.

Itâ¬"s a lot more trendy than your typical Asian, family-owned restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised by how nicely decorated it is. Thereâ¬"s one main room with a smaller long room at the back, presumably used for private parties but I can see myself sitting in there in the day sipping on coffee with a good book in the near future!

They have the usual things on a Vietnamese menuâ¬¦ spring rolls, soft shell crab, pho noodle soups, Vietnamese chicken curry and also some dim sum. I wasnâ¬"t too hungry so I went for the Banh Xeo which is a thin, crepe-like pancake filled with pork, prawns and bean sprouts and served with fish sauce and fresh herbs. Caravaggio's is split into two parts. The front part is used more as a cafe and the spacier back part is used as a restaurant. The decor is lovely, a combination of cream and browns with pretty lighting and beautiful wallpaper on one side of the wall. It kind of feels like sitting in somebody's really nice dining room actually, the plush seats make sure of that. The restaurant is decorated with classic artwork whilst operatic music plays in the background. It's quite a surreal experience in a way, you don't really feel like you're in Camberwell. It's really relaxing in there and I can imagine myself sitting in there for hours sipping on their yummy coffee.

Now onto the food! The menu's fairly simple. They have a variety of pastas, a few starters, some meat/fish dishes and a selection of paninis. I've only tried the pastas and a panini so far but everything has been good and definitely value for money! The pasta's are about Â£5 a plate which is about right. This is one of the few pubs in the area that is happy to have some rugby on, even the premiership games (shock shock horror!) so I tend to come here for that reason.

It is a cosy, intimate place in the evenings with low lighting and candles. The interior is typical of the vast majority of pubs you see around these days. Comfy wooden tables and chairs, a decent selection of drinks, good pub food from an open kitchen and friendly staff make this place feel welcoming and a good place to stop off for a relaxing drink.

I just realised tonight that this is one of my favourite pubs in London. It's so inconspicuous that chances are you'll never go there, unless you happen to take a train from Denmark Hill.

It has to be the best pub at a railway station in the UK, let alone London and is a brilliant reason to miss your train home.

The place has been refurbished from the original station building. Lots of wooden beams, exposed brickwork and even the original station clock, which is a mighty, magnificent time piece, permanently stuck at around twenty to three.

There's lots of comfy and cozy areas to sit, which give the place a very homely feel. They do fresh juices (I had pressed apple and ginger today) a great range of beers and ciders, very decent pub grub and nuts. The staff are a friendly bunch and the music is usually cool in a chilled out funky way.

It's somewhere to go with a bunch of friends, or to find some solace with a book. In fact the longer I write this, the more I realise there are very few places this good around.

Most Wetherspoons can be pretty grim places to hang out, but the redeeming factor in this establishment are its great outdoor spaces - kids play area out the back and good views out the front.

This really is a fabulous place to come on a Sunday afternoon. I can't say I've tried the tuna melt just yet, but the burgers here are out of this world. My friend had the Sunday Roast here the other week and it was all we could do to stop her chewing the bones.

There's a lovely, laid-back atmosphere here, and even better - there's table-service. There are an assortment of games available - Pictionary, Cluedo and so on.

My friends and I decided to join in the pub quiz. This was a rather spur of the moment decision. My friends and I are all profoundly deaf, so doing things like this can often be an inconvenience. However, after speaking to the bar manager he happily went off to print out an additional copy of the questions so we could all play.

I may be a bit biased with this as the S&D is kind of my local, however many reviews from friends visiting from outside the area lay weight to my claim that this is definitely one of the best pubs around.
We recently attended the Halloween pub quiz, which was great fun. The food was very nice though in the past the service has been a bit hit and miss. We went for fairly basic fayre, nachos and some bowls of chips but they were very tasty!
The quiz was great fun and seems to happen weekly rather than monthly as indicated above. I haven't had the chance to attend the film nights as yet but certainly plan to in the future.

Jono's is a fairly large members-only snooker/pool club on Camberwell New Rd. There's no windows or anything to look into the place, only a door where you buzz yourself in so it's quite dodgy! Rumour has it that the local criminals hide away in there from the police until the coast is clear :s .It opens until early in the morning (or is it 24 hrs?!!) so this makes it really easy if the rumour is true!

I've been there a few times whilst very drunk with a group of friends when I was still a student and none of us are actually members but they just look angry and then mumble that we should remember to bring our 3 forms of ID with us next time :D

From what I remember, it was fairly cheap. Inside it's your usual setup of pool/snooker tables, quite dark I think. Hidden on a side street off Herne Hill Road, this pub is quite unexpected. They've a comprehensive selection of lagers on tap, alongside a substantial (and good value) range of food.

They do a variety of discounts throughout the week, like half price meals on Wednesday and 2 roasts for Â£11 on Sundays.

Ah....Golden Grill....I lived in Camberwell for 2 years when I was a student so I've spent a lot of time in the early hours of the morning in here! It almost feels like home because it's somewhere that gives me yummy food when I may or may not be feeling too good lol.

Most people get takeaways but they have a small restaurant in the back with about 14 seats. You end up paying a bit extra to sit in but you get pitta bread with olives and dips which are quite nice and saves you trying to eat your food whilst drunk, walking home and avoiding the er..."colourful" locals :D

They serve the usual selection of kebabs (shish, chicken, doner, kofte), burgers (chicken, beef, cheese), chips, fish, falafel and houmous. Most things come in 2 or 3 sizes but the small is usually enough for me! My favourites are the shish kebab and the chicken burger, both with loads of their home-made chilli sauce, yum! ENJOY

This place, without a doubt, does the best fish and chips I have ever eaten in my life. According to my sister, the scampi is just divine too. The fish is fresh and made to order.

You have the option to take away (and very reasonably priced it is too), or to eat-in. The restaurant section doesn't tend to be very busy, which is a real shame, as the food is outrageously good. The best bit being you can bring your own bottle!

The staff are lovely and friendly and very chatty.

Mozzarella E Pomodoro is one of my absolute favourite places to eat. I have lived in Camberwell for nearly 4 years and every single time we have a special occasion we seem to end up eating here!

The food is great, with a huge selection of fish, meat, pasta and pizza. I personally rate the pizzas and the pasta with olive oil, garlic and clams! There is a lovely list of wines and the staff are more than happy to discuss which wine would be to your liking. You also get a bowl of gorgeous green and black olives and a bowl of bread to start.

At time of writing, on Tuesdays all pizza and pasta is half price.

In the heart of Camberwell lies this family owned greek restaurant that has been there since 1974. The ceiling of the interior is covered with vines which makes it pretty intimate and special. They also have a few outdoor tables for the summer.

They offer traditional greek dishes such as moussaka, kebabs, kleftico and a whole load of greek starters. If you want to try a good mixture of different dishes, you can get their meze (£14.00 per person) and you get 8 starters for the 1st course, 6 dishes for the 2nd course and 4 dishes for the 3rd course. I'm usually pretty stuffed by the end of the 2nd course! It's great!! Extremely good value for money.

If you don't want to go for that, a few of my favourites are:
Sheftalies - Minced lamb & pork with onions, parsley and spices
Afelia - Cubes of pork marinated in red wine and coriander seeds

Also, their greek coffee is just amazing. It's the proper stuff where you have to wait for the granules to settle on the bottom and then sip it slowly. You have to enjoy it sweet though because when you ask for it to be medium, it's really sugary but try it anyway!In the heart of Camberwell lies this family owned greek restaurant that has been there since 1974. The ceiling of the interior is covered with vines which makes it pretty intimate and special. They also have a few outdoor tables for the summer.

They offer traditional greek dishes such as moussaka, kebabs, kleftico and a whole load of greek starters. If you want to try a good mixture of different dishes, you can get their meze (£14.00 per person) and you get 8 starters for the 1st course, 6 dishes for the 2nd course and 4 dishes for the 3rd course. I'm usually pretty stuffed by the end of the 2nd course! It's great!! Extremely good value for money.

If you don't want to go for that, a few of my favourites are:
Sheftalies - Minced lamb & pork with onions, parsley and spices
Afelia - Cubes of pork marinated in red wine and coriander seeds

This is a nice, bright cafe with vietnamese owners so they have baguettes filled with either your usual sandwich fillings or some vietnamese ones. I love their special roll with home-made pate, spiced and normal pork. It comes with pickled veg, chilli sauce and mayo. Simply scrumptious!!

It's quite nice to sit in there. I think they have a downstairs bit aswell but takeaway is also available. They have a good selection of hot and cold drinks including hot/cold vietnamese coffee if you want to give it a try. Safa is quite trendy looking from the outside with a glass front. Inside, the decor is modern. It's not a big restaurant, maybe 30 covers at a time. The staff are very friendly and the menu has a good variety of dishes which are always presented well. The food is generally pretty good with some dishes that are even better. Some of my favourites: Crab bhuna, tiger prawn balchou, prawn poori, paneer and lamb sikampuri kebab,xacutti chicken,baingan bhaji,keema naan.
