We made a Saturday lunchtime visit to Selfridges for a spot of (luxury) grocery shopping. I'd been to Selfridges many times as my dad used to take me there when I would go for lunch with him when I was kid and he worked in the area and I have since continued to visit these places for over a decade and I've seen the "carvery" change it's location once. It did not turn out to be as busy as we had expected and although an orderly queue had formed when we arrived it was nothing in comparison to the ridiculous queue for Yo Sushi neighbouring it. We were at the Salt Beef counter within 10 minutes and ready to make our orders.

The main menu consists of Salt Beef and Beef Tongue in various bread choices such as traditional rye, bagels, foccaccia buns etc. and my girlfriend and I both chose the 1 whole Salt Beef sandwich on rye with mustard and a pickle. Â£6.95 each plus 50 pence for the pickle. Ouch. A real punch in the stomach and kick in the... But, the salt beef was tremendously good, juicy and succulent and delicious in two slices of fresh, soft and fragrant rye bread accompanied by a monster of a gherkin.

Brick Lane and Brass Rail, although both as brightly lit as each other, that is where the similarity ends. And by comparison they are really chalk and cheese. As far as this review goes, Selfridges beats Brick Lane hands down on taste but you can't beat the value of a bagel filled with salt beef from Brick Lane. No trip to London is complete for me without a visit to Square Pie at the back of Selfridges.
It has a small take away bar where you can buy hot pies with all the trimmings (mushy peas, mash and gravy). There isn't a very big seating area but it doesn't get as busy as it used to.
They sell hot seasonal pies that you can also buy cold to take home with you. They come in a variety of fillings like steak and kidney, jerk chicken and lamb and rosemary. The pies come served in a big box with a lot of mash if you opt for it.

Don't expect your usual tetleys or PG tips to be served here, this is a proper tea shop with a wide range of infusions that will intoxicate your senses! The price is really cheap, just Â£1.50, but the taste sensation is so much more.

Food is the same price but absolutely delicious, you just can;t go wrong!

Service is also amazingly friendly, with a smile which nowadays is a rarity! They are quick to serve you and never quick to get rid of you.

As already mentioned in an earlier review, its not a large teashop and youâ¬"ll be sitting next to strangers, but it seems to work so just go with it!

Turn abruptly off of Oxford Streets busy rush rush rush (there's a slipway next to H&M) and you find yourself in the laid back and cafe cultured lanes of Marylebone.

I love this part of london, not only are there some marvellous shops, but I'm risking nearly failing to mention to one of the best places in the area: Bean Juice. The healthy side of super healthy Bean Juice is one up on the its chain counterparts; here staff are super friendly - and very happy to enter into a banter of 'so how do you feel', and 'how can we make you feel better'. Slightly worse for wear due to a lack of sleep and dancing on the tiles all night, my last visit was met with a bleary eyed and thick voiced response (or rather grunt) that resulted in a concoction green in colour (suspicious) but assured that 'down in one' would perk me up. Gosh they weren't wrong. Green Giants aside, I don't know what the Bean team put in that little super juice (green by all accounts) but WOW perked up and raring to go after this super juice. Also on offer are some rather lovely cakes, muffins and dried (super) fruit treats.

After my next fatiguing outing i'll be sure to head back to Bean Juice. also rather lovely is to sit outside of an afternoon and people watch those rushing by... Those are the ones missing out on the high juice content inside :-)

Sienna as a name is taken from the Italian city Siena that is 'known for its treasures'. Sadly the romance and chicness that is supposed to be purveyed is lost on thie newest of Selfridges eateries. More noisy and indiscreet than sophisticated substance, Sienna's offers dried up muffins for the shopping fatigued. And at a cost.

Situated on the ground floor of selfridges, in the home department and directly beneath the central escalators sound reverbrates around the cafe area and back again. This means collapsing here after some serious shopping is far from relaxing or restorative. But what the situation lacks in calming surrounds, it more than makes up in people watching potential. Passerby's surround; gaze upwards for a multi-layered person purveyed view or just to either side for bustling of heavily laden shoppers.

If you are longing for feet up moment, the scones are better than the muffins and come with clotted cream and oozy fruited jam. The tea is good too, but its more 'quick bite' than lazy afternoon tea as seats are too hard and bustling shoppers too busy and close for comfort. A welcoming atmosphere and delicious waffles. the place is staffed with beautiful ladies and run by twin brothers who are extremely freindly and polite. I think this place is ideal to bring family and freinds who are visiting for a treat or simply relaxing alone with a cup of tea coffe or fuit smoothy and a good book. I love this place for its good food and great atmosphere!! What an interesting day this was, learned a lot about all the pleasures and challenges pregnant ladies have. On this particular day I was accompanying one of my best friends who is expecting her first born in a few weeks. So going from shop to shop looking for the odd set of baby equipment/cloth/..etc we came to Mamas & Papas looking at pushchairs. My friend, also a coffee lover, needed a rest and on the first floor of Mamas & Papas is Cibo Cafe that looks both stylish and comfy with its large pictures of babies.

The service was friendly whilst the food was so so. I had the Tiramisu, see picture, which unfortunately lacked in taste, had too much chocolate powder on top but at least it had a pleasant consistency. The coffee was acceptable but nothing incredible. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're not expecting a baby, but if you're it is a comfortable and peaceful little place.

I had a tuna melt here that was fishier than a longshorman's underpants after 3 months at sea. Gross. No lettuce, tomato, nothing. Just bad tuna cheese, squished beyond recognition.

And the latte was terrible too.

While waiting for the shops in the Oxford/Regent Street area to open, we happened upon this little coffee shop and decided to while away some time sitting at one of the tables outside the front while drinking coffee.

And I'm rather glad we did, this was a very nice place to stop. Service was quick and put us at our ease - we didn't feel rushed, but within a few seconds of setting foot in the place we had given our order and been invited to sit outside. It can't have been much longer before the coffee itself was in front of us.

Excellent cappuccinos, dark, creamy and frothy, perfect for breakfast. Great idea, much like the salad bars that one finds in larger cities in the US, but not that successful once put into play.

They serve a varied set menu of wraps (which can be put on a baguette if you like), and a number of salads where you choose the base (jacket potato, greens, rice, or pasta) and choose a number of ingredients which they serve up for you, along with your choice of salad dressing.

The toppings for the salad are numerous and look pretty fresh; the price is reasonable, and I regret that I didn't go for the salad bar and instead chose a goat's cheese baguette with a heavily curry-spiced tomato chutney (not very good at all).
