Emmi's is a well kept secret for residents of Telford Park (the western bit of Streatham Hill) and Hyde Farm (the easternmost fringes of Balham).

Those relying on the weekend colour supplements for their information probably still believe that until the arrival of Trinity Stores in Balham there was nowhere to buy good delicatessen produce on this side of SW12.

Although Emmi's doesn't aspire to the foodie heights (or the prices) of Trinity Stores, it continues to provide a well selected range of deli staples - well chosen Italian meats and salamis, a useful and well kept cheese selection, and home made items, together with a useful range of standard groceries that you may have forgotten on your supermarket shop.Emmi's is a well kept secret for residents of Telford Park (the western bit of Streatham Hill) and Hyde Farm (the easternmost fringes of Balham).

I can't believe nobody has reviewed this shop yet. It is so good, for so many reasons. Here are just a few:

1. It's the first place I ever found Rachel's thick greek-style coconut yoghurt. If you aren't already a convert, go and try some - it's the best thing ever. (You can get it in Sainsbury's now, but you couldn't back then.)

2. Every single thing they sell is organic and totally virtuous. You practically feel like a saint when shopping there. Organic meats, soya, beauty products, tampons. Even the wine. Of course that makes it expensive, but when you feel like you deserve a knighthood for shopping there, who cares?

3. They sell lovely cereals, dried fruit, nuts and muesli by weight, so there's less extra packaging. They've thought of everything!

4. They stock a great selection of alternative remedies (let's not get into whether you think homeopathy is a pile of bunk or not), some of which are very hard to find outside of Neal's Yard and the like.

5. Their beauty products are ace! I love the Weleda and Jaason ranges, and I continue to aspire to Dr. Hauschka.

And if that's not enough, it's never busy, there are never any queues, and the staff are super-friendly. Yes, it's expensive. But somehow, a till receipt that would cause a heart attack in Tesco never seems to raise an eyebrow in this place. Maybe all that healthiness is a calming influence. Sat down for a light lunch and ordered a Ploughman's. Expected usual. Got exceptional. The cheese was freshly cut Lincolnshire Poacher. Ham was freshly sliced and full of flavour. Came with a little salad. Perfect dressing. Home made chutney was right up my alley. Bread was fresh and crusty. Simple, quality ingredients worked really well to make this the best ploughman I have had since camping as a young man. Sat down for a light lunch and ordered a Ploughman's. Expected usual. You really do see me here every week..

It's a small (ok, tiny) shop right next to Balham tube, but manages to fit in more than you'd think. The obvious is the meat - organic/free range, and great home-made sausages and pies. But they also sell some delicatessen like cheeses and cured meat etc..

If this doesn't convince you to buy your meat here, then perhaps the fact that one of the guys working here played a butcher in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd will! :-)You really do see me here every week..

Balham Halal Butchers - Looks awful but is actually brilliant by Browners

If you've got a slow cooker and like to turn big bits of touch cheap meat into delicious soft stews then this is the place to come.

The things I like most are:

Whole oxtails, all in one piece
Lamb shanks
Goat
Neck of lamb
Blade of beef
Shin of beef

They also sell all the normal meat but it's the stuff above that gets me excited.

If you're not alarmed by a place with goats heads, circular saws, questionable hygene and hardly anyone in it then give these guys a try.
