Just inside is a charming statue of a painter with his palette. I had never heard of him but took a photo of his name and checked him out on Wikipedia. He was an official painter in wartime and also painted the railways including the Eurostar and portraits including Her Majesty The Queen. He has three sets of letters after his name. Best of all, and most amusing, he has a mouse as his symbol on his paintings and apparently you can see two of them on the statue, one on the plinth. Next time I go back I shall look for the mice and take a photo of them.

Eating on the station includes a Costa cafe, a Bagel Factory kiosk.

The toilets cost 30p.
If you are on your way to the Festival Hall it's less than five minutes away so I suggest you wait.Decor - The white corridors downstairs are an improvement on the usual grey underground tunnels.

Coming in from the Festival Hall or London Eye you pass plaques at the entrance which give the names of railway staff who died in the wars. When I arrived at Tottenham Court road station taking the exit on the north side of Oxford Street I wasn't thrilled. The area outside seems to be undergoing renovation. But the stalls in the street at the top sell umbrellas at only £2.99 and all sorts of tempting items.

A convenient crossing allows you to get over the road to the south side safely. Providing you obey the red and green signals to pedestrians.

Coming back, in less of a hurry, I was much more impressed. Colourful mosaics were over the escalators. The advertisements on the walls were sets of animated images, constantly changing. Very high tec.

I gasped, 'We don't have those out in the suburbs!' My friend and I bantered, "You ought to get out more.' 'On second thoughts, you ought to stay in more.'

Downstairs at the end of a corridor we heard a young man playing on a bamboo flute. We paused to ask him where bamboo flutes come from - apparently all over Asia. He stopped playing the flute but the music carried on, at least the base drum accompaniment. Slightly surreal. He suggested that we photograph him alongside the circular mirror in the corner so as to get our own reflection in the mirror.

This station grows on you. Actually it's better to change here than wait until Harrow & Wealdstone which is deserted and desolate at night. Better still, if you want the overground, get the through train from Euston, where you can often sit on the train and wait.

Queens Park is a grotty station. It has sheltered seating. Starbucks in in the busy street upstairs which has some restaurants which seems highly priced for the area.

I wondered why it was called Queens Park station and looked on the Internet to no avail. I found a station in Toronto dating back to 1860 named in honour of Queen Victoria, and one in Australia named for Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII. I also learned that Queens Park Rangers football team started here before moving to Shepherd's Bush.

I ordered myself a book on railway station names, Discovering London Street Names by John Wittich. His book says that Queens Park is named after Queen Victoria.
