We had a strange experience here last Saturday evening. We went into the Lexington store, looked at the menu and stood at the counter. The guy behind the counter ignored us and kept chatting to customers (mates?) Then another member of staff came in with some foodâ¬¦ and a pair of old trainers on a tray. The same tray.

Still we were ignored but given the food/ trainer combo it meant we could slip out quietly.

Despite the great reviews I canâ¬"t think that Iâ¬"ll be back anytime soon.

Currently being addicted to cupcakes, when I read about the Buttercup Cake Shop in Kensington I added it straight to my to-do list. A couple of weeks later I came up with the ingenious plan of taking my sister and her BF to Whole Foods, but beforehand suggested we head to Buttercup for morning tea, as it is not a good idea to visit Whole Foods on an empty stomach!

Buttercup is hidden away, a few blocks back from Kensington High Street. It is a small shop with only a couple of tables, and a small display cabinet of delicious looking cupcakes. There is a good range of flavours - the friendly American owner has bought over some American recipes, and added a few British concoctions as well. You can eat in (with a cuppa) or take away, and they also offer delivery.

Between the three of us we sampled four cupcakes - the Mocca, Banoffee, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and the St George's Day special - which was a vanilla cupcake with red and white icing. For years Sia food and wine has been used by young children aged around 13-17 years for purchasing alcohol and cigarettes.
Known by them as 'Haydons' they make their way there to buy alcohol and go drinking in near-by parks.
The staff there (2 asian men) know that the children are underage as when they purchase alcohol they tell them to, and qoute, 'Put it deep in your bag', or if there are other customers in the shop they wait until they have left to serve the kids.
This has gone un noticed since I was in my early teens, now nearly 18 it's still going on and more and more kids hear of it and go there to get drink.
This place should have it's licence removed as it is using it in the wrong way.
They are helping add to the rise in young people drinking from an early age.

These guys love what they do and it reflects in the food and service. They use the best quality produce and it's always fresh. The quantities they dish out are always generous. Sambos and salads are all extremely tastey and very healthy. The staff are always friendly and very courteous. They have definitely set the standard for London Liverpool Street!

Tasty and healthy food but ridiculously priced. I know so many people who come back shocked from their first (and last) shopping experience and literaly feel robbed.

For that I've had to ditch it as a good place to get lunch and slap it down to 2 stars.

The variety of produce at Borough Market will astound you - you can get everything from ostridge steaks (and eggs) to pots of cassoulet brought over from France. You'll find big bunches of herbs that put the little packets in supermarkets to shame, quality fish and meat, oils, cheeses and truffles. Sat down for a light lunch and ordered a Ploughman's. Expected usual. Got exceptional. The cheese was freshly cut Lincolnshire Poacher. Ham was freshly sliced and full of flavour. Came with a little salad. Perfect dressing. Home made chutney was right up my alley. Bread was fresh and crusty. Simple, quality ingredients worked really well to make this the best ploughman I have had since camping as a young man. Sat down for a light lunch and ordered a Ploughman's. Expected usual. When the Owners of La Bottega del Gelato in Bayswater retired about 2 years ago I knew that Londoners who savour real Italian home made ice cream would be in serious trouble.

The outlet has allegedly been passed on to a relative; however what is being served is clearly industrial.

Some may remember a similar affair with the retirement of the owner and ice cream maker at Benigra on Tottenham Court Road some 8-10 years ago.

Thankfully Christian O'Ddonno and a friend who were students in London and could not satisfy their taste for the Ice Cream of their homeland saw a gap in the market. After undergoing on the job training back in Italy they opened a superb Ice Cream Parlour in South Kensington that also supplies some notable restaurants. The sorbets and Ice Creams are really outstanding!

Caramello and Panetone ice cream are my particular favourites.

London changes you. I remember thinking that when I was having a conversation with friends about 'How many glasses of champagne is too much?". This is ME. I never used to drink champagne and here I am pondering when is the polite time to slur 'No thanks' to the offer of a top up. But posh stuff is so in these days. So, it was with a sense of excitement that I ventured into London's first dessert bar last Sunday, with my friend from South Africa. "This place is amazing" I told her confidently, pretending that the glossy PR that I had read was firsthand experience. Getting a little bit lost in Shepherd's Market betrayed my confident exterior, but we eventually found it. At first glance, the shop is a little unassuming. I like that.

Sunday last, if you recall, was when we had snow in London. It was freezing. I was really looking forward to sitting indoors, hands warmed around a mug of hot chocolate while I casually decide which desert to choose first. Meanwhile, jealous passers-by would press their noses against the window while I mouthed 'Shoo!' at them. It wasn't quite like that.

The shop is lovely. It is really rather plain and simple, but very stylish. And cold! So cold! Maybe it's because it had just opened, or maybe it's always like that to keep the desserts cool, but not once did we feel like we wanted to stay any longer than we had to. Maybe that's the plan... It also didn't help that my seat was right next to three glass shelves, so everytime I looked sideways I got a sharp shelf corner in my cheek.

The service ranged from friendly to uninterested (the staff disappeared and we literally could have walked out without paying), but I was disappointed that the Dessert Bar area (where chefs create wonders in front of your eyes) is not manned on Sundays, although a bit of research before would have told me that.

The Aztec Hot Chocolate didn't have nearly enough kick, tasting to me like, erm, Hot Chocolate; the desserts themselves, at Â£5 - Â£7 each looked magnificent (see pictures) but were ultimately forgettable and the whole experience left me wondering why I shelled out almost Â£30.00 when I could have had tea and biccies at a posh hotel nearby. This is an usual review, as I only bought a single banana from this shop. However, I felt compelled to write a review because it was the best service I have had in a shop ever and I guess that is what TrustedPlaces is all about.

The shop itself is a wonderful throwback to a bygone era, a bit like stepping into 1970's film set. Charmingly old fashioned and the lady (proprietor I suspect but I wasn't sociable enough to ask) behind the till was unfeasibly friendly.

My banana was absurdly good value, served with a captivating smile and a painstakingly found napkin. What more could I ask for?

Sadly this shop is not a local for me but if you are local it then I suggest you try it out and hopefully find it the same as I did. This is the place to buy wine - awesome selection and very helpful/ patient staff. The experience alone of setting foot in this historic shop should be a rite of passage for every person who lives or visits London.

For a special treat try their very own Good Ordinary Claret or their Kings Ginger (a must have when out and about in the cold British countryside).Agree 100% with the other reviews for Berry Bros.

Last time I reviewed The Wine Cellar, I seemed a bit sceptical about their claim to be stocking the 'largest selection of Portuguese wine in London'. Well, now I'm far less so, as I had a look at the basement cellar, which is pretty likely to make the above statement true.
You have above 50 square meters (that's probably a few million sqaure feet for the imperially inclined amongst you) of dedicate shelve space to Portuguese wine and an excellent selection of port too.

It's virtually impossible to spot this from the shop floor, so make sure you ask the owner about wine or port. Do try it out. A great place for interesting sandwiches. The main draw is their spit roast chickens, which they sell in baguettes (half a chicken!) or with salad. The cheese experts there can help you to rustle up some intriguing new delights to savour and are happy to let you taste things.

A few of my favourites are The Stinking Bishop (obviously nothing to do with the name) and also Mimolette (apparently the champagne of cheeses - whatever that means!).

A wonderful place for a treat, a present or just an olfactory browse.

When I went (my first time), they hardly had anything we asked for because their ovens were broken. I've made the BEST "escalope a la moutarde" with their veal!! (A real treat when I feel home-sick)

Deninitely go there:
- if you have a special dinner party
- you really want to impress a carnivore!
- over the Christmas season(order in advance)

Monmouth make seriously good coffee. One of a handful of places in london where you can get a decent latte. Sorry - no trim milk here they use non pasturised organic whole milk, but I'd happily be fat in exchange for the quality of their coffee. The food is pretty good too and you can visit the markets afterwards! For those that prefer to make coffee at home, they also have a great selection of beans.Monmouth make seriously good coffee.
