I like cakes, and for a few years now i've been getting Cupcakes from here. Yes they ain't cheap, but then again they are quite 'rich' and even for a man with my appetite, i can't really eat more than one in a sitting.

Tip: Avoid (or remove) the silver balls on some of them, unless you have very good dental insurance. This things would break Superman's teeth.

The plainer ones i find are nicer than the fancier ones.

I stopped in for falafel this evening, and it was excellent. For the centre of London it is cheap as chips. OK, so a can of coke is about 1.50, but a pitta stuff to bursting with falafel, tahini, crunchy salad and a bowl of good chilli sause was about a fiver.

The falafel themsleves were wonderfully crunky on the outside, and nicely chunky on the inside, not the lump of deep fried hummus or Mc Chickpea Nuggets that you sometimes get. Food Inc is basically a fancy looking food store which has been broken into departments and spread along the centre of the ground floor of Whiteleys in Bayswater. I had a browse through one evening before heading upstairs to Le CafÃ© Anglais for dinner.

If you lived in the area it would certainly be a classy place to pick up some food for dinner on your way home, or for that weekend dinner party.

There was a good range of dry goods and fresh produce on offer - everything from gourmet chocolates, and wines from around the world, to freshly made pasta, fruit & veg, cheeses, and delicious looking aged steaks. I tend to shop here on a daily basis for esentials but will not give my trade to this establishment any longer. I have witnessed the out of date bread ties being removed and plain yellow tape put back on the out of date bread and put back on the shelf. Watch out if you buy fresh veg, it is weighed and a figure is put into the till which you will never know the price charged, a request for a recipt is treated as "DON'T YOU TRUST US" attitude. Watch your change (especially O.A.P.'s). Fresh milk tends to cruddle by the next day and when returned it I was told I have to check that it's fresh before I buy it... (although in date).

I've never been one for frozen meals and always think if you have time to heat something up you can cook it from scratch (not to mention the dodgy ingredients such as battery chicken etc). However, sometimes you just can't be bothered and for nights like this...there's Cook. The meals I've had to date are great - like a home cooked meal that you'd never cook yourself (and all their meat is ethically raised in the UK). It's not cheap, coming in at around the same price as a decent take away, and you have to do side dishes, but the choice is amazing and it's good to have stuff in the freezer for those nights you're feeling lazy. The meals also come in single, 2 or 4 person portions so could easily do singletons or families. While there is a restaurant inside, the best way to get ice cream from this little shop is to visit the hole in the wall, flirt with the cute French guys serving you, taste-test everything, and finally settle on a couple of flavours - which they will cram either in a cone or a little paper cup for you. Then take a walk up to Primrose Hill, sit in the sunshine and eat your ice cream, and then lie back and enjoy one of the few beautiful days a year the English summer has to offer.

The ice cream is absolutely fabulous and it's about 1.70 a scoop, 2.40 for 2, and so on and so forth. They also sell ice cream in bulk to take home, but eating it outside while meandering about on a lazy Sunday afternoon is probably the best way to go.

oh this place is so sweet, but it's the aroma of perfectly baked loaves that makes my stomach rumble most.

Everything is baked freshly, daily and with panache to give variety of some really extraudinary and satisfying breads: their milk bread (slow-made, so i'm informed) is ideal for picnic sandwiches or just under toasting and spreading with lashings of quality thick marmalade. YUM!

Ingredients are freshely sourced, and flour stone-ground: And this in the world of bread making is supremely important! As a resulf loaves take on a smooth texture and lightness that tempts any taste buds. I remember the light golden crust of the rye and raison loaf I bought, but do not remember finishing it quite so quickly!

My experience is always happy one where fine flour means loaves are for tearing and eating fresh; and if you're feeling friendly sharing with others! This is a chocolate shop for the fashion set, in two senses. First each piece is beautifully constructed with a range of exotic and subtle ingredients -- they look great! Second, each piece is really small, so if you're someone who would rather have one small taste of heaven rather than a big dose, this is perfect for you.

It's not cheap -- each piece is 1.50 or so. What a great place for lunch! It is a shrine for food!
I always get lost in it and not sure what to choose because there are so many gorgeous looking things! Some mains changes everyday: veggie curry, lasagna, sausages&mash,meat balls, couscous etc... portion are huge and around 5-6 pounds for take away. There are limited places to sit in.
They use mommouth coffee so should be good (Haven't tried yet...) The staff is funny! Dressed up like German Heidi and very very sever! If someone is making a mistake it won't pass easily... It is just an amazing place!What a great place for lunch! It is a shrine for food!

Local Hero Deli - Potential Gem on Fulham Road by Hugo

Local Hero Deli has huge potential; charming atmosphere that elevates it from the dreary-ness of the chains and an ace up its sleeve of a pretty little sun-trap of a garden at the back with un-cramped seating.

On a further cheery note the coffee was delicious.

On the downside: the very appealing quiches were let down by the rubberising effect of being heated in a microwave (I assume), the slight nonchalance of the staff (who, for example, let it be known that splitting 2 quiches between two plates for the sake of variety was something they would rather we did) and the rather lame/ unloved salad that came with it. Despite being a Belgian chain with branches in New York, Le Pain Quotidien feels tres francais. It's like Paul's more rustic, filling boulangerie cousin: same great French approach to fresh bread, delicious croissants and decent coffee in bowls, but with heftier open sandwiches and salads on the menu. It also has the benefit of free wifi and a great breakfast menu - the porridge will fill you up till way after lunch, and only those with iron self-control will be able to resist the sticky jars of praline spread that appear with the baguette. Service is swift and charming (and definitely included on your bill).

All branches are buzzy, with a large communal table, as well as smaller tables, but the Kings Road branch is particularly good for people-watching, packed as it is with chic continental locals enjoying a taste of home, yummy mummies and shoppers. For a solo coffee & newspaper moment or a bigger lunch with a glass of wine, Le PQ makes a refreshing change from the usual coffee chains. Oh this place is sublime! What an experience! Fortunate enough to be taking part in Food 2.0 a cookathon for 'charity' and Action Against Hunger hosted amongst others by TrustedPlaces, as contestants we spent the morning souring the best for the raw materials for some fabulous dishes!

So it was inevitable that I was taken in hand and led into La Fromagerie. I will now be a regular here whenever i come to london! First, the ambience (on a Sunday) was busy and vibrant with palate led fusion of tempting flavours crammed from floor to ceiling. Little delicacies to tempt and delight your senses from the charcuterie plates with seasonal dishes to the aroma of the cheese maturing cellar.

And its the cheese maturing cellar that is the real niche. A slide-to glass door is your entrance into the cool clime of the cellar. Don't tough! The friendly and helpful staff are on stand-by to advise, tempt, lead tastes and spur you onto to your perfect cheesey purchase. we opted for a Rocquefort. splendid. smelly, robust and slightly tingly on the tongue. What more could you want from a lazy Sunday morning for the ingredients of a perfecto brunch!

After having read about the Grocer on Elgin, when I spied it whilst taking a casual wander along Portobello Road a detour was in order. The grocer specialises in ready made meals, and although we didn't buy any on this visit, they did sound/look good and decent value considering the location.

There was also a small selection of grocery items and fruit and veg, but the thing that excited us the most was the selection of Australian products available - always exciting for us ex-pats! Not one, but three flavours of Tim Tams, chocolate bars, Vita Wheats, Nutra Grain and more. After a visit to the very interesting Museum of Brands, Packaging & Advertising, a coffee was in order and the first place we came across was the inviting looking Gail's on Portobello Road.

Gail's is a bakery and cafÃ© which has a mouth-watering array of tasty looking goodies, along with a variety of fresh baked breads including the biggest loaf of sourdough I have ever seen!

The four of us took a while to decide what we wanted to eat with our coffee - everything looked great. In the end we opted for a healthy-ish muffin, a cute little pecan tart, a ricotta babka, and a mini maple cake. All were very good, apart from the maple cake which tasted like it had been sitting around for a couple of days. We had a strange experience here last Saturday evening. We went into the Lexington store, looked at the menu and stood at the counter. The guy behind the counter ignored us and kept chatting to customers (mates?) Then another member of staff came in with some foodâ¬¦ and a pair of old trainers on a tray. The same tray.

Still we were ignored but given the food/ trainer combo it meant we could slip out quietly.

Despite the great reviews I canâ¬"t think that Iâ¬"ll be back anytime soon.
