And upon first glance i thought it would be a great gallery. But once inside i was massively disappointed. I covered most of the place in an hour or two, which some say may be quick but the art was of a poor standard. Six of us went there. Same BYOB and more or less same menu and price. So why have they changed the name from Mirch to MIRAN? Mirch means spice or chillies. So? The answer was in the food.
All the food was below average in taste. The fish massala was a piece of grilled fish in breadcrumbs. What masala? Butter chicken was atrocious, even lowest quality supermarket 'boil in a bag' could compete with it in taste. Saag gost, Methi gost were bland to the extent that we wondered whether the owner had run out of spices or a chef who knows how to cook these. Bland, bland, bland. Not a single one of us were impressed. It was a relief that the puddings were all the standard unpacked variety like all the other Mirch Masala outlets. So no problem there. Our caucasian friends were so disappointed that they remarked that if the cooking was for Hammersmithian palates, they would better stick to supermarket stuff which will give a better bang for the buck! No, don't get me wrong. None of us are spice bandits. Nearly all of us were 40+. BTW, this is on Hammersmith road, so parking could be a MAJOR problem. This was the nearest 'Mirch Masala' restaurant near where I work. Six of us went there. In March it was the late Jane Goody. Upstairs was a book on The Goddess, about Marilyn Monroe.

The ground floor has some childrenâ¬"s books, maybe to save lugging the children upstairs. As a sucker for anything free, although I have no children nor grandchildren, I was intrigued by the offer of a free bath mitt if you buy two Touch Me books for babies.

Music
Upstairs the music section has a good selection of music CDs. I stopped at Country Music and found sets of two or three discs for £4.99.

Stationery
Diaries were thirty per cent off In March. No diaries with pencils. But lots with lines. Including the pocket size diaries with two days to a page.

Notebooks
Lots of note books with pages you can tear out. A4 notebooks with pages which have margins. Handy.
Iâ¬"m still looking for large size whiteboard markers with thicks oblong tips so you can write large enough for people to see.

A separate section is on paper.

Self-help and Dating
Books told me how to find a man or woman, why men and women are different, the perfect marriage, survive the divorce, the older man, how to make yourself perfect, be confident, marry a millionaire, or make your own million. When Iâ¬"ve written another best-seller or found husband number two and married a millionaire Iâ¬"ll write my own book.

Psychology
Book on A2 level psychology has neat flow charts which show the symptoms history, problems and solutions. Bipolar - depression caused by - well, right now Iâ¬"m pretty happy thanks. I just had coffee and bought a CD.

Location
Half a dozen buses stop outside. The bus stop is called Tilling.

Free outdoor parking is in front. In the retail park are Lakeland and two or three other shops.

You can see Brent Cross Shopping Centre. i think there's a bus link. There may be a pedestrian bridge from the indoor Brent Cross Shopping Centre. The Holiday Inn hotel is nearby.

Borders' website shows activities such as author signings, and children's events including a teenagers' book club.

Starbucks
Upstairs picture windows give a brilliant view over the motorway and Holiday Inn hotel and Brent Cross Shopping Centre.

Starbucks has slightly different hours. The bookshop is open 9-8 monday to Saturday, and 11-5 on Sunday. Starbucks closes earlier most days. It is open 9-7.30 Mon-Sat and 10.30 to 5 Sunday - but opens before the bookshop on Sunday morning. During opening hours you can sit reading on sofas in Starbucks. But the last half hour of their opening hours they are open only for take away.

Coffee
I ordered mocha (chocolate for those who are addicted to both chocolate and caffeine. For 35p extra I could have a swirl of whipped cream on top. Cheaper than Cafe Alba in Brent Cross - though their swirl of whipped cream was more impressive.

Cake
At tea time they stocked cakes and muffins. I had a cake with orange. The fruit bread with sultanas looked nice.

Toilets
Upstairs at the back near Starbucks counter. Two cubicles for ladies. A poster said Borders had on line book reviews and wanted feedback. Hereâ¬"s my feedback. One soap dispenser was a challenge. I used the other one.

Borders started in the USA and you can read about them in Wikipedia. They have other branches in central London and Watford. My favourite is the one in Singapore at the central crossroads on Orchard Road.

Once more into the one way system, dear friends. The author was last seen circling the one way system. As the sun sets, she circles south on the North circular, trying to go north. Itâ¬"s time somebody colour coded the roads. Like the traffic lights. Red for north, green for sout. And yellow for â¬Sstay where you are, ignoring the hooting, or go round the roundabout again - if I were you I wouldnâ¬"t start from here!â¬

Border is not in Brent Cross Shopping Centre but the newer Brent Cross Shopping Park which you see looking south towards the centre of London from Brent Cross Shopping Centre..

Borders Books
The table which greets you just inside the door often has the latest personalityâ¬"s book.

Red for north, green for south. And yellow for â¬Sstay where you are, ignoring the hooting, or go round the roundabout again - if I were you I wouldnâ¬"t start from here!â¬

Nice atmosphere and good to know people are doing art events without an eye for the bottom line. The Museum is in listed buildings within the former Royal Arsenal that has its origins as a Henry VIII dockyard. The Museum as an entity is the oldest military museum in the world but the current site was opened in 2001.

The museum was set up by the Royal Artillery to tell the story of the regiment and the 2 million men and women who have served in the regiment. The Museum, which is way bigger than you'd expect, is full (though well presented) of artillery hardware from Roman times to what the Army use today. The Museum is however full of human stories and perhaps the star exhibits are the actual guns (cannons) that Victoria Crosses are made from. Uniforms (male and female) and loads of personal items give the hardware a human scale. See a lock of Napoleon's hair and the Duke of Wellington's umbrella too!

It's easy to get to by road but the Thames Clipper means you can travel by river from the city centre while the new DLR link is one of the coolest of all ways to arrive and the station is 5 minutes away.

A great cafe (really excellent), lots for kids to see and do including trails, and gift shop means its got the lot. Always lots of special events on, monthly wargaming and the kids camouflage/birthday parties they put on are incredibly good value too.

The atmosphere of the Arsenal right by the river is hard to beat and the adjacent Greenwich Heritage Centre tells the story of the locals (100,000 at its peak) that made the big guns and ammunitions for the artillery.

A great heritage experience - don't follow the herd to Greenwich, go to Woolwich.Firepower is truly one of London's hidden gems of history. It houses a very good range of antique furniture and jewellery, complemented by some interesting period items. From what I gather, it houses a number of independent traders.

Recently, they have been changing direction and now stock a very good range of decorative contemporary gifts, ranging from posters through to glassware. Itâ¬"s particularly good for Art Deco ceramics and jewellery.

Itâ¬"s well worth a visit at this time of year, and itâ¬"s always worth bargaining on the more expensive items.

The Old Cinema has been running for many years now.
