The pub was not, as the Good Beer Guide stated, at the north west corner of the cathedral complex, but some 10 minutes walk (I know, it could have been worse), far from the main drag in a neighbourhood reminiscent of Coronation Street. Tucked away down a small, residential road it would be easy to miss. Having found it though, more fool you should you chose to walk on by!

Pretty and quaint (or do I mean pretty quaint⬦) on the outside in bright yellow and blue with window boxes and hanging baskets a plenty, the front door leads you in a very comfortable lounge bar. Book shelves dominate this space crammed with everything from Mills and Boon to the OED. Round the other side of the bar one finds four excellent beers ⬠Batemans XH and GHA, Hopbine and another which I cannot now recall. The food is straight forward pub fare. Rolls, sandwiches, homemade soup and ploughmanâ¬"s. Predictably enough I had a ploughmanâ¬"s and it was perfect.

Now then. On to the little touches that make the difference between a great pub and a good pub. On the bar there were piles of pies, quiches, loaves of bread, scotch eggs, pasties et al. Apparently the butcher up the road closes at 1pm and anything thatâ¬"s left over he take down to the Dog for them to sell from the bar. The do an excellent Sunday roast by all accounts. Once a month. And they are currently fully booked â¬Ütil October. There is a monthly folk and acoustic jam, which I am sorely tempted to rock up for next time. Itâ¬"s a long way to go but I reckon it would be worth it. There are regular quiz nights, charity events, gigs and concerts. The walls are decked with pieces by local artists there for purchase of just for your viewing pleasure. The pub hosts a book exchange, which explains the large and eclectic book collection I guess. And the staff are the most obliging and pleasant I have ever had the privilege to meet.

To me this is a real jewel in Lincolnâ¬"s crown and the kind of pub that every landlord or lady should aspire to ⬠friendly, welcoming, community orientated, straight forward and just down right nice. Itâ¬"s well worth the trip to Lincoln, let alone a 10 minute walk to find it.The Dog and Bone in Lincoln is with out a doubt one of the best pubs that I have ever been to.

The Better Half and I were enjoying a day out in Lincoln on Saturday and, being conscientious and clever types we did a bit of research and decided upon the Dog and Bone as our lunch time watering hole. First impressions were fine after securing a table and ordering our first drink. It was after deciding on what to eat and going up to the bar that things started to take a turn for the worse. We were told by the barman "If you're eating inside we come to your table and take your order". 'Fair enough' thought I and we returned to our table expecting to be followed by the barman as there was no one else at the bar for him to serve. I was wrong. We sat at our table with no drinks for over ten minutes waiting before we decided that maybe walking out to eat elsewhere would be our best bet. It was as we were about to walk out when a member of staff appeared to take our order. We ordered food and drinks and awaited our drinks (that I'd have preferred to go to the bar for and fetch myself in the first place)to arrive. This didn't happen for quite some time, another ten minutes I would estimate. Then I noticed our drinks being put on a tray at the end of the bar. The drinks were then left there for another considerable amount of time (ten minutes again I would guess) before being brought over to us - again we were considering walking out and the member of staff appeared (unfortunately) in the nick of time.
The wait for the food was quite short in comparison to the amount of time it took for our drinks to be delivered but when we did eat we wished that we had walked out.
The wife and myself had chosen the Chicken Jalfrezi which, as it was on their 'Specials' menu, we expected it to at least fairly palatable - we weren't expecting an Indian quality curry from an English pub, but were expecting much better than we received. There was hardly any chicken in the meal and it was in what must have been a Sharwoods sauce at best though more likely a supermarket bargain brand.

We were extremely disappointed with both the food and (especially) the service.
I could understand the slow service if it wasn't for the fact that the pub wasn't at all busy (unsurprising really - today my wife spoke to several workmates who had also had poor service experience at the Woodcocks - it's a shame she hadn't spoken to these people before we wasted a good part of our only day off this week and a substantial amount of our money) but there were more than enough staff to deal with the clientele so really there was no excuse.

I can honestly say that we will never visit The Woodcocks again. If I was crawling through the Sahara desert, dehydrated and gasping 'water, water' and the Woodcocks appeared as a mirage, I would skirt around it.

Even our local Wetherspoons puts the Woodcocks to shame both on quality of food and service.

One out of ten for both food and service is a charitable score.
My family and I decided to visit The Woodcocks yesterday as a treat and an alternative to spending most of Sunday cooking dinner as we usually do. I saw this as a good sign, and we decided we'd order some food as well as a drink. Moments later I was astounded to see one of the waitresses picking her nose in full view of us and all the other customers. I then wondered if she was doing it deliberately because everything seemed liked too much trouble for her, and she didn't mind letting the customers know. She caught my attention a second time when a disabled man almost knocked some drinks from her hands and she lost her temper. I then wondered what the manager was thinking when he decided to employ a short tempered, bad mannered girl with tattood forearms and a pierced lip. Next I overheard some customers on the next table discussing how long they had been waiting for their food, which by their judgement had been over half an hour. They were lucky, because we ended up waiting almost an hour before ours was served, and that was after I had been back up to the bar to complain. To make matters worse, our £8.00 a head steak and chips was barely luke warm, and we ended up leaving most it. I'd given up complaining because I knew I'd get angry and I didn't want to let it spoil our day. It's a shame that places like this are still in business, but we've learnt our lesson and we won't be going back!My girlfriend and I visited on a busy Saturday afternoon, and struggled to find a table. On this occasion I would have happily chosen any of the starters. In the end, I plumped for perfectly executed fishcakes with a creamy horseradish and chive sauce. Main courses were similarly tempting - lots of locally sourced meat and game, plus some inventive-sounding fish dishes.

I chose the slow-cooked blade of beef with horseradish mash (I'm keen on horseradish, ok?) and it was divine. The beef was falling apart and wonderfully flavoursome. Perfect comforting fodder for a chilly winter evening. Pudding was a chocolate and orange fondant - the middle was wonderfully melty. The honeycomb ice-cream that I ordered on the side in place of the requisite vanilla was divine and most certainly homemade.

Excellent wine list and good service, this looks like a quaint pub from the outside (and certainly would be great for a cosy drink downstairs), but venture upstairs and the food is well worth a detour.I travel a great deal for work and always look forward to the annual visit to Lincoln as the hotel we stay in is directly opposite this great pub and restaurant.

The menu is always exceptionally tempting, making it hard to choose. Now we know why.

We ordered a steak sandwich and a bowl of soup and waited a full 30 minutes. After this time a member of staff informed us that they didn't have any steak. Couldn't believe it took them half an hour just to look at the ticket; I would have expected a sandwich and soup to be cooked and served in less time than that. I think we only saw two orders come out of the kitchen the whole time we were waiting.

We cancelled the order, although they didn't feel it necessary to make our drinks complimentary and these weren't cheap either - £1.50 for a glass of concentrated apple juice and £2.50 for a J2O.

Even if our food had been served as expected, I still wouldn't recommend the place. The clientele seem pretentious and I don't know why considering they're in a chain pub that's trying to be upmarket (table service etc.) but failing to get even the basics right. They're welcome to it, I'll never visit a Dogma again. This was the only place we could find a free table at 1:30 on a Saturday afternoon in Lincoln city centre.
