I'll explain...

They started with this pulchritudinous 14th Century thatched pub in the village of Harome (20miles from York) and reopened it after it had been closed for 7 months. They got things startlingly right and accolades followed and then the empire started growing. In this village they now run a corner shop; a private dining room; accomodation in the form of cottages and a farmhouse; and a Herb Garden not to mention a Butchers, Delicatessen and Off Licence in nearby Helmsley. With all of these delights, what a perfect village Harome now must be to live in. Your local Spa or a Corner shop selling homemade fare to a Michelin standard...!

The food at The Star, needless to say, is wonderful. Prepared using as much of what's available locally as possible, from cattle and pigs to the relatively local fish from Whitby. Most of the menu namedrops local village names, as the origin of the fare is totally transparent.

Any gripes - well not really - though I hope that they haven't lost their joie de vivre, so slick now is the whole operation. A local reviewer had the temerity to call the menu pretentious. Even their website has had the corporate makeover from the rather quaint version not so long ago.

Still - much to be glad about and its appeal doesn't look like waning.
