City Inn Glasgow - Highly Recommended by twallac

Review by twallac

Rating: 5.00The City Inn at Finnieston Quay in Glasgow is in fact a chain hotel, but in no way has this feel. Having stayed regularly at a number of chain hotels up and down the UK, this is by far on of my favourites.
Almost adjacent to the Exhibition Centre is couldnâ¬"t be more perfect to stay at when attending any concerts or gigs. Although it isnâ¬"t ideally located for getting into town, as it is approximately a 20minutes walk along the river and transport links are not fantastic. I canâ¬"t help but forget the negatives and still rave about this hotel. The hotel does have a car park, although it isnâ¬"t particularly big, I have always managed to get parked no problem. However this has always been during mid-week stays.

The staffs appear extremely helpful, and even the standard rooms I would highly recommend. Decorated to a contemporary taste, they provide up to date media accessories (apple imac tv). The hotel also provides a dvd library free of charge. There are free toiletries which are fairly posh. A gym, bar and a restaurant. I have eaten in the restaurant on numerous occasions, and although not particularly cheap the food is faultless.
The City Inn at Finnieston Quay in Glasgow is in fact a chain hotel, but in no way has this feel. This was my most recent sampling, and I was very pleased with it. It is a Travel Inn, so don't expect five star food, drink or atmosphere, however it's not a world away from that either. For the budget price, it'll beat any other hotels in the area in terms of room quality, food quality and hospitality, all of which I'm delighted to say are very good. Although I didn't make use of any of the premium features during my stay, my basic room had a TV and a shower which delivered high-pressure, hot water (always important after a night out, I think!) The price was very, very cheap by city centre standards and so I would recommend it to everyone - not just professionals on a budget. Not living in Glasgow's city centre myself, I've had to use hotels on occasion for business. I'd highly recommend this place as long as you don't have a car. If you have a disabled badge you'll be able to park on the double yellow lines surrounding the hotel, otherwise forget it. Leave the car at home or find a long-stay carpark elsewhere in the city.

The rooms are clean, comfortable and warm. Even though it's close to the motorway I was surprised how quiet it is, it's barely noticeable. Breakfast is worth having, it's a buffet with cooked food, cereals, toast and fruit juice, tea and coffee. It's reasonably priced and you can help yourself to as much as you want. This is a good place to stay, it definitely exceeds expectations of budget hotels. It's a typical Travelodge. The rooms are basic but clean, as are the bathrooms. There's not much in the actual hotel, just a couple of vending machines for snacks and drinks.

The motorway is really close by but I've never had problems sleeping, I barely noticed the noise with the windows closed. There are bars over the windows on the bottom floor, I don't know what you'd do if there was a fire but both times I was situated right next to the fire exit so I was okay with it. If it's a problem for you phone ahead and tell them you want an upstairs room.

There are lots of places to eat at just across the road, a chinese, indian, burger place, chip shop. There's a bingo hall too. There's a carpark with plenty of spaces so you shouldn't have trouble parking. The menu offers a range of starters usually including a soup of the day, main courses including vegetarian options and sweets including a chocoholics dream and a crème brulee with fruits. Diners can choose from an extensive wine menu or leave the choice to the informed staff. Service is efficient yet unhurried and you can linger over your meal without feeling pressured.
The food is artistically arrayed and service is discrete yet attentive. During my stay some of the rooms were undergoing refurbishment, this did not diminish my stay. Was able to book online, which is always helpful. The hotel was busy but you do not get disturbed by other guests, very thick walls. The breakfasts are extremely well cooked, cooked to order. Porridge was delicious. Breakfast room felt a bit tight, it is located in the basement. A helpful night porter is available, as are all of the staff. Rooms are large, the usual large rooms found in Victorian buildings. All rooms are ensuite. Very clean. Beds are comfy but not so soft you sink into them. Recommended for those visiting the West-End and City Centre.Last time I stayed here was within the last year. Rooms can accommodate up to 3 adults and feature an en-suite bathroom, colour TV, air conditioning, and hairdryer. The hotel is an ideal base for a shopping trip with both Buchanan Galleries and the St Enoch Centre located within walking distance. Breakfast prices at the hotel are quite expensive; a cheaper option would be one of the many Wetherspoon pubs located in the city centre.
Glasgow Hilton International - Five Star... but not as we know it. by ONscotland

Lovely guest rooms, a variety of public areas and a leisure club are all the ingredients of a good hotel, but what of the actual guest experience?

Check-In:
After queueing for about three minutes (time it, it seems like forever) without apology, I was checked-in by possibly the unfriendliest receptionist I have ever encountered. Practically through the key at me and made those awful sighing noises when I dithered over what newspaper to have the next morning - which in the end wasn't delivered.
I then queued for the lift as the hotel, all twenty storeys, is served by only three lifts. I waited for about five minutes before one became available.

The Room:
The room was lovely. Really nice. The bed was really comfortable and the air-conditioning worked. With views over Glasgow, a flat screen television (albeit with a woeful lack of channels, but you don't go away to watch telly), a kettle, teas and coffees (and awful UHT milk portions) and two shortbread biscuits. The bathroom was new, with a huge mirror, bath with shower, and La Source from Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries. There was a minibar with another Hilton 'trick' - as soon as you TOUCH anything in the minibar - it's added to your bill. Even if you just move something. Be warned!

Room Service:
More 'queuing' - this time five minutes on the phone, which kept going back to reception who would then transfer me back to room service, which went unanswered... anyone would think they didn't want or need my custom! Eventually it was answered, and the food (Pizza) although boring, was adequate, and not much more expensive than a takeaway. After the pizza, we call room service and ask them to remove the trays. Which they don't do.

Breakfast:
More queues. I manage to get into the queue and just the right time, and have a ten minute wait for breakfast. Others behind me aren't so lucky, and soon the queue is stretched from one side of this (remember:) five star hotel to the other. I have breakfast in the bar because the restaurant is so busy. I feel that the hotel must have known how busy they were going to be, but there is just no excuse for making people queue for breakfast.

Hilton loves branding. Every table has a tacky paper sheet with 'Hilton Breakfast' on it. The (paper) napkins have 'Hilton Breakfast' on them. The cups and mugs have 'Hilton Breakfast' on them. Perhaps people forget the hotel they're in, or the meal they're having?

Breakfast in the bar is dull. The fried options are so dry as to be unedible, and simple things like porridge become a Krypton Factor style puzzle, as there is nowhere to place the lid of the porridge pan, while holding the bowl and serving yourself.
Breakfast on other mornings was less eventful, and there was no repeat of the queueing for breakfast although every day I had to ask for the milk to be refilled, and even things like HP Sauce was always 'on request'!

Room Service:
I have room service again that night. Service is fine, except that again, they don't remove the trays after I call them to.

Hilton Bar:
Using the bar as a bar rather than as an annexe for breakfast was a more enjoyable experience, and I couldn't fault the friendly service from all the staff here.

The Leisure Facilities:
A large swimming pool, sauna and steam room, as well as a jacuzzi are offered. They were all fine, although the steam room didn't feel that clean so I didn't stay long. The pool area didn't have any windows at all, and it felt like swimming in a basement. The subdued lighting gave the area a gloomy feel, and also showed up how tired the whole area looked.

Check-Out:
More queues. However the bill was accurate and the whole process took less that two minutes.

Hilton markets itself as a five star hotel, but in almost every area, it falls short of what I know as five star.

Turndown service is not provided - unless you ask for it.
Collecting trays after room service not provided - unless you ask for it. And even then it wasn't done. On the second order, I had to wheel the tray outside the door six hours after calling for collection.
Newspapers are offered - but not delivered.
Room service - the rooms were serviced from about 8am in the morning - want a lie in - then again, ask them, otherwise you'll get a knock at the door!

If you do stay at the Hilton Glasgow, there's every possibility you'll have a good stay. But just don't imagine that this is five star!

The Glasgow Hilton markets itself as a five star hotel, and at first glance, it appears to fit the bill.
