I called in on a Sunday lunchtime and had a very disappointing tapas. Disinterested service and bland poorly cooked dishes. When I raised this the surly waiter sneeringly stated it was made with only authentic ingredients, perhaps, but if you can't cook..

I really like my tapas, allways diving in if I find one but this was the worst I've experienced. A very smart Club in Central Edinburgh (they also own another venue in Leith), this is a smart place to sample malt whiskies or enjoy absolutely exceptional food.

Surprised at the negative reviews, maybe we've been lucky but we've never had a bad meal here and the staff are very friendly, maybe it's because we avoid Fri/Sat night dining? Tried this out of curiosity and so glad we did! Just the best Chinese we've had yet! A wide variety of dishes, mostly unfamiliar but superb!
The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to assist with the menu.
I'd recommend going with a few people so you can try different dishes.
A "must try" in Edinburgh, and did I mention it's also byob!

We spent a lot of money in this restaurant on Saturday night and the service was disgusting, the Waiters behaved as if we were an inconvenience to thier night and we could also hear AND see them referring unpleasantly to our table , rolling their eyes etc. I will be writing to complain as it spoilt what should have been a great evening.

There are a few Howies dotted around the city - they're a bit of an Edinburgh institution.

visited here a few times now, each time i visit edinburgh. the first thing that has set the food apart is the freshness of their fish, other sushi serving places in glasgow and edinburgh have fallen down here, and the sashimi too, here is both generous in portion and very fine, an absolute favourite. this time we visited early, just after five. Had a set menu, sashimi, miso, a main of teppanyaki served with rice and then a desert of ice cream. Great food, very attentive and polite service, the steak teppanyaki in particular was great and if you can sit at the bar in front of the teppanyaki plate when its busy as we did last time, the somewhat grumpy looking chef is very skilled.
this is in my opinion the best japanese food to be found in edinburgh and better than any of the similar restaurants glasgow has to offer too. have to try the chinese menu some time as the food when you see it being served to other s looks very good, though still not able yet to get beyond the delicious japanese menu. tasty house white too!

It's posh, over done and completely brilliant. The tasting menu is both ruinously expensive and utterly delicious. Every city needs a few restaurants like this, they remind everyone what truly cutting edge cuisine can be; delicious and daring. The price you pay is the price, but hey-ho, if you can't blow Â£200 on a meal for two once a year, you're dating the wrong person.It's posh, over done and completely brilliant. One of the best curry houses in Edinburgh, right next door to the Stand comedy club (curry & comedy, my idea of a night out) the 9 Cellars is ace. Don't let them sit you in the first set of cellars though, it feels like you are sitting in corridor by the door. Demand to go downstairs to another of the nine cellars from which the restaurant was built, the atmosphere is awesome and the food authentic. This cavernous, opulant former Bank cannot fail to turn heads when you walk up the stone steps as if entering a grand old country pile.

You enter the Grill Room (main bar !!) through huge marble pillars over a chequered marble floor and the vastness of the place just hits you. The eponymous Dome towers above the island bar that dominates the floorspace and you're thankful that they reclaimed this place from the avaricious crusty buggers for the use of us common folk !

The service is friendly and the food good but not spectacular and they even sell a very presentable pint of the ubiquitous Deachars IPA (I fear for this lovely family brewery now Heineken have bought it "lock stock") from the traditional tall imposing Scottish beer fonts that first petrified CAMRA members that thought they were keg dispensers !!

I had an amazing meal at David Bann during the Edinburgh festival. I went with a group of 8 and they were very friendly and accommodating. It was one of those very long leisurely dinner with lots of great food an wine and it was lovely!

I thought the food was delicious-- I had pumpkin ravioli and chili with chocolate coriander sauce. Just thinking about it now makes my mouth water! Everyone with me absolutely loved their meal. The atmosphere is very clean and nice-- a bit upscale. I eat here at least every two weeks both at lunchtimes and early evening. Very friendly and efficient service and very good food. The menu could do with changing a bit more often, but that is a minor issue.

We paid a long awaited visit to the Witchery recently and found the whole experience rather dissapointing and pretentious.
The Fish chowder starter was uninspiring and watery, the Chateubriand for two (at Â£56.00) was minuscule. We had a side dish of Brocoli with Anchovey butter, but this was too strong to acomany anything less than a Vindaloo!
We eventually found a nice bottle of wine (having scoured the 89 page wine list) but were so dissapointed with the dining experience that we left without attempting a sweet.
We liked the unique surroundings and atmosphere...but have eaten far better food at Gastro pubs, and at a fraction of the cost.

After having lived in China for a few years, I gave up on finding decent Chinese food in Edinburgh, that was until the Szechuan Restaurant came on the scene.
It replaced an ok-ish Chinese restaurant and all of a sudden Chinese food was good again :)
The staff are friendly and generally helpful - plus any Chinese restaurant where you find Chinese people eating is a good place to dine.

This one delivers.

Just went back to the Szechuan Restaurant (08/10/08) with a party of 23 people and they were again fantastic. The food was great and the staff were attentive - and very helpful in their suggestions.

Ah, Monster Mash, what better than sausage and mash after a long day in a cold, wet, hilly city like Edinburgh? It's a lovely looking place, very simply decorated with lovely booth tables but the best thing about the place is the food. Sausage and mash is pretty good even if it's bad but at Monster Mash they've taken the art to a higher level. It's one of the few places I visit a lot where I've only ever tasted one dish, the vegetarian sausages with the mustard mash and onion gravy. It's so good that I can't bear not to order it no matter what else looks good on the menu. They have different sausages every day I remember things like leek and cheese, rosemary and mint and once even a carroty affair. The rest of the menu seems to be mostly different kinds of pie and the puddings are school dinner faire like steamed pudding but like I say, I just can't tear myself away from the sausage and most particularly, the mustard mash. Walking past the Nile Valley Cafe you may think that it looks just like any normal 'greasy spoon'. but that couldn't be further than the truth. I love it here. There is such a diverse choice of foods, both from something hearty to a quick bite to eat. The prices are unbelieveable too. What is also unbelieveable is the amount of food they manage to cram into their sandwiches, rolls and wraps. It looks like a struggle for them to put it all together, and it is certainly a struggle to eat it all! Service here is fantastic, and so is their coffee - really mellow and smooth.
