The ambience is a bit strange: long refectory tables with rather cramped chairs, or steel tables outside - given Edinburgh's variable climate there can be a sudden inrush from the outside tables when the heavens open! It is one of the developments on the site of the former Royal Infirmary (now pretentiously called Quartermile) and is very handily sited for all the University departments in George Square.

The selection of open sandwiches is good, and worth the rather high prices. I've not sampled the cakes, but am assured by sweeter toothed friends that they are as good as they look. They do a lot of take-away coffees etc., and sometimes queuing at the small counter which serves both eating in and eating out can be rather slow. Favorit is another one of those places you go because it looks so lovely. It's an old style diner with booths and black and white tiles where you can just sit for hours. One idiosyncratic thing about it that I love is how it's always quite dark inside. I hate really bright, harsh places so sneaking into a booth with my back to the window and snaffling a ben and jerrys milk shake is a great pleasure. The menu is a bit limited, but what is does have is good, I love the goats cheese and sweet chilli thing most of all and the ice cream milkshake I mentioned earlier is a fatty dream of loveliness.

The service is a bit rubbish, but at the same time, I prefer it to forced cheerfulness and over-friendliness, but if you need someone to be happy and friendly when they serve you, don't visit Favorit. They don't make a fuss if you sit there nursing a tea for 5 hours though and if you're really desperate, you can just go up to the counter and order there.

It can get absolutely packed in the evening and don't even *think* about it during festival time, but a diner open till 3am is going to be a big popular draw, specially as it's so close to all the university buildings.Favorit is another one of those places you go because it looks so lovely. The coffee shop here has so much to do for the younger children! Security is well thought of, and you have to enter through a gate - prevents them from escaping! Lots of places for parents to sit while the children burn of excess energy on all the various pieces of equipment, and there are loads! Now, i have only given them 3 stars - although not strictly their fault, a lot of older children tend to be allowed onto the equipment by their parents. On one occasion some older children barged past one of mine and they ended up hurting themselves. Just wish parents would look after their own! The coffee shop here is... ok, a little expensive but if it means your children have an early night then its most definately worth it!The coffee shop here has so much to do for the younger children! After years of going to the same greasy spoons and eating so many fry ups, i decided at the beginning of the year to start to try a little healthier. After trying Urban Angel I was shocked at what i had been missing for so many years. The healthier meals are so much more tasty - the food is cooked to perfection by urban angel chefs and the flavours just spring out at you! Just going here and trying the delicious food has helped me lose loads of weight, even though i now eat out more often! I'm now a regular here and it still doesn't break the bank, and i'm feeling so much more healthy! This is so obviously a different slant on the two fat ladies! Although for this type of cafe, i'm sure they won't be thin for very long! I know i won't be if i keep going there! Don't get me wrong its not greasy or anything like that, its just that the food they make is so delicious and moreish, i just can't stop myself! The do the best bacon butties i've ever had! The rest of their menu is the usual fayre but all cooked to perfection and you are never left feeling hungry. Quite the opposite in fact! Now, these people are serious about their tea! They have perfected the art of brewing the perfect cuppa, but don't expect PG Tips here! There is a diverse range of teas, you will probably be a little overwhelmed to start with, i know i was! If tea is not your thing, they also do the usual coffee's - actually my favorite drink here is the latte - unbelieveable smooth, mellow and creamy. They have fantastic quick bites such as cakes and sandwiches. I've only sampled a few of these, but they were all delicious and actually quite cheap in comparison to their competitors. There really is nowhere better in Edinburgh to get a big breakfast and recover from the night before!

Lovely quaint atmospheric surroundings, friendly service, good menus and great food

Always has a good selection of warm, comforting grub - just what you need to keep the cold out (which is necessary all year round in Edinburgh!)

I've been for breakfast, lunch and dinner here (not on the same day though) and am never disappointed

Great mixed bunch of people make it an interesting place to people watch too!There really is nowhere better in Edinburgh to get a big breakfast and recover from the night before!

This is ofcourse like all the other Costas in terms of the products on offer, the usual collection of coffees, hot chocolate, cakes, muffins, and snacks though I was pleased to see they don't charge any extra for decaf coffee or soya milk. This place is usually very busy given that its on the corner of Princes Street and Hanover Street and two sides of the cafe have lovely tall, wide windows that look onto the impressive columned facade of the Scottish National Gallery (or is it the RSA, I always get them mixed up), Princes Street Gardens and the castle. The room is spacious with the usual comfy sofas and chairs and the service is efficient if not terribly warm. Black medicine coffee company is a pleasant enough cafe but its interior makes it a little more unusual than your average Starbucks or Costa with a preponderance of wood furniture and finishes. Unfortunately the overall effect is of bland beige-ness. It offers a pretty much standard range of the usual coffees, a selection of milkshakes and four standard smoothies though mine recently was overloaded with honey which dominated the flavours of the fruit (presumably out of a fear that it wouldn't be 'sweet' enough otherwise). They did a rather nice pesto and cheese melt in a foccacia which was tasty enough. The 'chilled' music was cliched and unimaginative and the cafe loses marks for me for charging extra for decaf and soya. Surely any business can spread out the costs of these products over its range like the bigger chains do? Susie's is a bit of a vegetarian institution in Edinburgh having been here at least as long as my 18 years in town (under a previous guise as 'Seeds'). The standard of food at Susie's is pretty high with a good selection of hot dishes (hearty and familiar fare though nothing wrong with that), as well as a lovely selection of salads, excellent soups, and some scrumptious sweets. Ofcourse there are vegan options but it also caters for lovers of caffeine and alcohol too so its not completely 'worthy'. There isn't a massive amount of room but it makes the whole atmosphere convivial and warm. There are a fair number of students who use the cafe as well as those that work at the University but it attracts a broader crowd. Live music also makes a regular appearance here too. I pay a visit to Starbucks at least once a week, normally first thing on A Saturday morning to prepare me for a good old weekend, and sometimes on the weekdays before work/on lunch breaks. I think one of my reasons to actually visit here is to have a coffee. No one can beat the coffee here, especially a Mocha Frappuccino (sp!) which is a really great Starbucks specialty. The staff at my local branch always seem to be really friendly, and really willing to help. This branch also sells a variety of foods, such as sandwhiches, toasties, paniniâ¬"s and obviously the collection of cakes. The Forest cafe gets four stars simply because its unique (sadly) in a city of high rents and predictability when it comes to most cafes. Its really as much a volunteer run arts centre as a cafe and has the energy of a small power station.

The food is veggie/vegan reasonably good value though prices have gone up now so that it can't be quite called budget level. The quality of the food and service is maddeningly variable but then again this isn't McDonalds - its the antithesis of it. However I've lost count of the number of times in the past that my order was forgotten (not just late).

There is an incredible multitude of very creative people, groups and events here - it can be quite spikey (as opposed to fluffy) at times but its heart is certainly on its sleeve and could never be accused of manufactured friendliness. Let's be honest, I buy a coffee here most mornings on the way to work. All regular take away coffees are Â£1.20 before 9.30 am which is very cheap by comparison with some of the neighbouring coffee outlets.

Service in this branch of The Globe is always with a smile, and it appears to be somewhat better than the other Globe tht I have tried on Henderson Row (who ended up leaving me with a scalded arm one morning!). The clientele in the morning largely consists of the same faces, which is a positive sign of the welcome they get time after time.

I don't really have any criticisms at all of the food or service in here and it has become part of my morning routine just as brushing my teeth is!Let's be honest, I buy a coffee here most mornings on the way to work. Well all know Starbucks don't we? They are pretty much the same the world over (unless you go to the States where they are half the price!), however, of all the city centre stores, this is perhaps the least likely to enjoy a quite natter in a comfy corner. The reason? It's just too small.

The front area is often jam packed with office workers looking to get something to takeback to the office with the result that the seats downstairs are often cramped and uncomfortable in amongst the crowds.

The seated area to the rear is too small to really take more than 5 or 6 small groups, so unless you're looking for a quick take-away coffee, I would suggest another Starbucks within the City Centre - particularly the large first floor cafe on Princes Street.

Now do not expect to be able to swing a cat in here! This must be one of the smallest cafes in Edinburgh with no seating as it is just a hot food takaway store, but it has been keeping commuters and Council workers in bacon rolls for decades now.

If you need a fix of a bacon or egg roll of a morning to help you start the day, then you really cannot go wrong with this place at the foot of Cockburn Street.

Also, this is a great place to go if you like your traditional sweeties like Soor Plums and Sherbet Strawberries dolled out from big display jars and served in a paper bag.

This is one of my favourite coffee shops in Edinburgh and is popular with shoppers and students alike. Anyone who has been to the previous unit would have found it quite cramped and small which can be disappointing at times if you are not one to enjoy sharing tables with strangers, however, they have recently upgraded to provide much more tables and chairs for customers.

I'm sure this is largely a reaction to the Starbucks which has opened a few doors along, however, it has been a long time coming as at times, the smaller space felt just a little too cramped to be cosy. From my first visit to the new and improved Kilimanjaro, it appears that is definintely a thing of the past with ample room for everyone.This is one of my favourite coffee shops in Edinburgh and is popular with shoppers and students alike. Although I'm a teatotaller, I do need a caffeine injection each day and visit most of the coffee shops of Edinburgh from time to time. Of all that I have visited, this is one of those which I am least likely to return to. I know it's very popular, but for me, the 'mix' just wasn't right.

I love a Sunday afternoon spending a morning reading the papers with a warm latte in hand and, as a result of traffice restrictions one day, decided to try this as opposed to my regular haunt.

Although the coffee was good, I found the music far too loud to be comfortable to the extent that I put my own headphones in (they're noise cancelling ones!) just to be able to sit and read the papers comfortably.

The noise was probably the biggest off-putting factor, although the day I visited, there was a large number of families in which wasn't really conducive to a relaxing Sunday morning read of the papers.

The noise was probably the biggest off-putting factor, although the day I visited, there was a large number of families in which wasn't really conducive to a relaxing Sunday morning read of the papers.

If kids and loud music are your 'thing', however, I suspect you will love this Beanscene.

I love this place! Its a great location to meet up with friend and chat away the afternoon over a coffee (or something stronger!) with fantastic food at a price range to match! This is a good little place to get coffee, hot chocolate, food, etc. It is always very warm and cosy so is really nice to go in and get away from the rain. I used this place to meet up with my ex when he was meeting me after work as I worked across the road. The hot chocolate is really nice, and you can get it with mini marshmallows and whipped cream! Yum! I don't like coffee but my ex said it is very good. The only problem here is the prices of things, it is very expensive. For a small hot chocolate I pay around Â£3 and it is quite small.
