Whilst on my stag do in Edinburgh, my father (who happily joined in with the youngsters!) took me around some of the great pubs in the city. One of them was The Jolly Judge, which is located off the main road in a courtyard. Enter the pub and you will immediately notice its old roof, covered with many bank notes in various different currencies from around the world â¬ a nice touch.

The landlord was a very friendly chap who welcomed our large party with open arms. Due to the small size of the alehouse, we sat outside on the benches in the courtyard â¬ even though it was September, the weather was fantastic.

In the corner of the pub, leading up to the toilets, thereâ¬"s an old arcade machine boasting Namco classics, which is an unusual feature, but we made the most of it!

Rating: 4.00This is a quiet pub off the beaten track with lovely homely feel to it. Drinks and food are average prices, but there is a lovely atmosphere here. A little dog is a permenant resident here, although you can't feed him, he just mooches around like part of the furniture - very sweet!

The pub has an outdoor courtyard as well as indoor dining area.

Also in the back there is something like the oldest bowling alley in the UK, with wooden skittles, so definitely somewhere to take a group of people. We had a buffet in there which was very nice indeed! Would highly reccommend!This is a quiet pub off the beaten track with lovely homely feel to it. A traditional Edinburgh boozer. It's got a bar and a snug in the back, both with old fashioned pokey wee tables. There's nothing fancy about this pub but given it's location in among the west port strip bars it's an oasis of decent beer and company. There is often a particulary good crack here after 6 nations rugby matches. A good mix of folk and a good choice of decent beers and whiskies. Great city centre location and a world away from some of the dives nearby on Lothian road. A short review but it does what it says on the tin!A traditional Edinburgh boozer. Dragonfly concentrates on cocktails with a small choice of beers to help the wallet. There's a huge range of cocktails and the friendly staff will conjure up anything in particular if you can't decide. The mojitos are highly recommended!
While it's very much a trendy young persons bar it's friendly to all though can get quite noisy and crowded at weekends as you'd expect. It's just a shame that all vestiges of the previous fire station have been erased as it is still known as "Braidwoods" to most folk and given the history of the building it's a shame to lose that.

Although a decent pub from the booze and ambiance point of view the real draw at the Cambridge is the huge choice of home made burgers. It's the same folk who run the wannaburger chain in Edinburgh and as you'd expect the burgers come in all varieties with some pretty strange sounding options. There are veggie burger and chicken burger options as well as burgers without the bun for those on an atkins diet. While it's not actualy an old pub Berts povides traditional pub favourites of plenty of beer to choose from and pub grub. There is usually a decent choice of specials and the scotch pies are excellent - and when served with chips and beans are a nice filling meal. The location is nice and central while just off the beaten track enough to keep it from being too busy.

Barstaff are friendly and helpful while the refurbishment last year means it doesn't get quite as crowded during busy lunchtimes although I miss the old snug in the back. Excellent bar in the centre of Edinburgh. It's on william street which is only a couple of minutes from the west end but feels much more laid back and relaxed. A good if dark restaurant in the basement (called "a room in the west end") is handy but comfy leather sofas to sink into with a pint upstairs are the biggest draw. Good choice of beer with some Caledonian ales usually available and a wide selection of whisky to keep to it's highlander theme. Gets a bit busy with the friday after work crowd so best get in early to nab an armchair!Excellent bar in the centre of Edinburgh. I never really right reviews, but for this place I felt it necessary. If only, for one reason and one reason alone, for the sake of the good people of Edinburgh and their hard earned cash. There are hundres of eateries in this fine city, some great, some mediocre and some crap, but none of them treat their customers with such disrespect as this place.

Here is a man, the other reviewers have hit the nail right on the head, who has the old hacks of the press in his back pocket. I can only think that he must have a safety deposit box somewhere full to bursting with incriminating details on these 'media' types.

Mr Ramsden has left a trail of disasters in his wake, and whilst buisness failures are nothing to be gloated over by anybody, this is a man who has been talking crap for years and his media mates keep pushing him onto the public as if he's some kind of hero. Every review of this restaraunt in a newspaper has been written by one of Mr Ramsdens 'chums'. John 'gimme a free meal' Gibson being one of the worst offenders.

Why am I writing this, because the reality of the fact is that members of the public will read all the media reviews and believe that this restaraunt could only have been sent down from the kitchen gods themselves. And what will happen in reality is, you will be attended to by a bunch of nast little snobs who seem to believe they are part of some self-appointed 'A list', who will sneer and make jokes behind the customers backs, or even to their faces apparently because you are not cool, or your not wearing trendy clothes, or you want to bring your own birthday cake, or you mispronounced the wine list etc, etc.

How do I know this, well from the evidence of the other reviewers who have already experienced their 'service style' first hand, and because Mr Ramsden has been insulting customers for years and getting away with it.

What an amusing sport eh, nothing better than slagging-off johnny-customer, "who do they think they are coming in here, making us wait on them, having to put up with their Next clothes and bad shoes, ugh, just horrible, it really does vex one".

It may be nicely decorated, it may even be a genuinely cheap offer, allegedly the target audience is the 'common man' however Mr Ramsden and his team don't want to serve the 'common man' and therein lies the problem.

Good citizens of Edinburgh, do yourself and your hard earned cash a favour, don't believe the media hype, go visit any one of the other eateries in Edinburgh that believe that customers are actually an integral part of their business and treat you with the respect you deserve.

Of course, this is only my opinion, and if you feel the need to visit Steptoe (maybe you are feeling particularly masochistic one night) - don't say you weren't warned.

Well What can I say!!!! Desmondo Tolcher the great drinks here so can it get worse? Yes, when he sings. If you are looking for love dont bother unless of course you are worse than deperate. The food is exellent, crips ala king, You dont have to be rich but if you do have a bob or two you can lend it oot naebother. Is it friendly?, yes very is it fun? yes most of the time is it a quiet wee place?, yes when Des is oot fir the night somewhere else.But really its a great place plenty of fun and laughter and can be a really good night out.Well What can I say!!!! Every time I go back to Edinburgh I love heading to The Basement Bar for a top scran. Although I like a drink or two, I have never frequented the Basement Bar as a drinker as it is the food in this venue that I really love. The majority of the menu is mexican, they serve other types of food but I've never really taken notice as the veggie burritos are the best ever. Served with your choice of two from rice, refried beans or salad you get a really good plateful and the price is extremely reasonable. I have not been back to The Basement Bar since the credit crunch! but would usually have paid around a tenner for an excellent meal and a couple of drinks. As the name suggests, this venue is set in the basement of an Edinburgh building so the restaurant is quite dark but lit with candles. The staff are bright and breezy in their flashy hawaiin shirts. Cloisters is a relatively new addition to Edinburgh's diverse and vibrant pub and bar scene and is typical of the imagination of venues in the city compared with the chain pubs that dominate other towns in the UK with their depressing generic blandness and predictability. Here a relatively small bar with plain white walls, cornices, large and small tables, an excellent selection of real ales and malts and all without the distraction of music makes for a great pub for the dying art of conversation and a good blaether. A good mixture of students and businessmen and real ale fanatics too without being full of beards. Some pubs are pretty predictable but the Phoenix is still a one off even if its not quite as wild as in days gone by. The landlord has been here for many years and the bar attracts a very unusual and very diverse clientele which is its great strength including posh Newtown students, gay women, locals, young folk, clubbers, you name it. The selection of beers is reasonable but unspectacular but you go here for the craic and to meet new people in an unpretentious environment. The Cask & Barrel is certainly one of the best pubs in Edinburgh not least for its fine selection of real ales which change regularly including quite a few English ones too. Its a lovely old style interior but not the usual cliches, with a great atmosphere and never swamped with music. The staff are friendly and efficient though its food is pretty limited but then there are load of eateries in the vicinity. It comes into its own if you enjoy watching football when it gets stowed out for big Scottish, English and European games. This isn't a rough boozer though - far from it. Quality. Particularly I would recommend the Caledonian Deuchars IPA on draught. The vibe in this bar isn't to everyone's taste - its VERY clinical, with hard floors, hard tables and quite a few hard chairs too it feels more like a cafe.

Its a locals place on the whole but not unfriendly and its pretty handy to watch the footy on one of its four screens. The food however is actually good value for money and it seems to do 2 for 1 offers on weekend breakfasts.

It has wide sliding glass doors which front it and so it has loads of natural light. The Royal Oak is a tiny little pub that plays host to lots of fine folk music. It's got plenty of character and it's slightly later license til 2am makes it very popular as everyone congregates to catch a last drink.
