The bakers oven do some great iced buns and cakes that children and adults alike adore. The smiling face iced doughnuts are a treat, they have hundreds and thousands as hair and are a quirky cake , they have some caramel covered ones that are also lovely and moorish.
The hot food counter is great. The hot pies and pastries that they do are very reasonable and taste nice. The vegetable bake and the steak bake are both good and quite cheap to buy.
The pizza slices are good if you get them fresh, not so great if they have been sitting about for too long. Great value for lunch on the run, never fails to fill you up.

Rating: 5.00Gret value chocolates that make you feel that they are special. The prices are good and compare well when you look at what else is around. The ice creams taste very nice but they have gone up a lot and we got 4 between us that coast us a massive Â£10, which shocked us, they were nice but top heavy in price. The gift boxes are good and the xmas stocking fillers and calenders are very good for children who feel they are getting the best when they et one of these. You can also have things gift wrapped in either paper or cellophane which does make gifts look very nice indeed.Gret value chocolates that make you feel that they are special. This is a good little shop to buy a fancy tea to try for you self or as a gift. Coming up to xmas they have a selection of good gift ideas that are well priced and easy to look at. The selection of teas and also coffees here are good, they have things that you can some times try out which can be helpful when making your choices. They have a wild selection of instant teas that range from a pina colada one, to turkish apple, so you will be over awed at the choice here. some of the hot chocolate gift packs are nice and they have a xmas hot chocolate also, that you could top with some of the lovely mini marshamallows.This is a good little shop to buy a fancy tea to try for you self or as a gift. Rating: 3.00The big tesco store near the hythe has a good selection of tesco products and the car park is always full and hard to find a space. The petrol station which is on the way in to the supermarket is busy and you always have to wait to put your fuel in but it is priced well when compared to other petrol stations so thats why this is the case. The supermarket has some self service tills, which drive you nuts with the voice that keeps asking you to put the item in the bag all the time, but is handy if you are in a hurry. You get your club card points here and they are worth getting as you can spend them in so many good places.The big tesco store near the hythe has a good selection of tesco products and the car park is always full and hard to find a space. Minervas has been in eld lane for many years now and I have had chance to try the chocolate that they do and it is good. But it is not in any way economic to buy on a regular basis, sorry but its true. It is heavy on the wallet to shop here in any quantity, so I have only had the odd treat or two from here. They sell hand made english and belgian choccies and novelties. You can find all manner of chocs here from, honey to champagne filled ones or the unusual cinnamon in a white choc mousse. Rating: 4.00The Tesco store at highwoods is bigger than the hythe store and offers a lot more. It has a big section for electrical goods, with tv and music systems on display. The house hold wares are extensive and the selection of clothing whilst smaller than the other store is still ok. The supermarket has plenty of parking and is always very busy even during later opening times so do not expect to be in and out of here to quickly. Humphreys stock a good range of fruit and veg although don't expect to always be able to buy everything whatever the time of year as they do adhere to the seasons to some extent, which many people have forgotten about due to everything always being available in supermarkets. A good proportion of the produce is described as local (in season) so you can support local growers as well as local shops. The prices are reasonable and in some cases cheaper than supermarkets, for example 10 apples for Â£1. Traditional fruit & veg shop where you are served by the assitants and service is fine. Rating: 3.00You can not grumble at the thought of going to Thorntons. Thorntons in Colchester is right near Culver Square, so it is very easy to walk past and get tempted by those delicious ice creams in summer! They have all the usual nice boxed chocolates and ones behind the counter that you can choose a selection of. The store is a little bit on the small side though, so when it is busy, it can be a bit of pain to look around. It is worth it though for a good gift at Christmas on a birthday, no one is ever disappointed with a nice box of Thortonâ¬"s chocs!You can not grumble at the thought of going to Thorntons. Like stepping back in time a decade or so, this place is a real find - how a shop should be, small in size but packed full of interesting items and with good friendly service.

It's not the cheapest shop, but with a small Tesco just down the road it's still surviving, so it must be getting it right.

You can't get fruit and vegetables here (try the green grocer further down Crounch Street towards the Hospital Arms), and you certainly can't do you whole shop here but it's great for those bits and pieces that make weekends special.

The Cheese counter is very good, and freshly ground coffee is sold at the back of the shop. The samosa's and bhajis are good as are some of the sweet pastries.

We always make a visit before Christmas to make up some food hampers - they sell a wide variety (shapes and sizes) of baskets for the purpose. These make great presents which you can tailor to people's individual tastes.

They always used to serve tea/coffee upstairs at the weekend but I'm not sure if they still do this.

Procterâ¬"s sausages is a shop in red lion walk, just off colchester high street. they always have a chalk board outside claiming that they have the best sausages in colchester, and I do tend to believe them on this! I donâ¬"t go there often as it can be expensive for some of their fancier varieties such as venison, but if you are making a special meal or wanting to impress the neighbours then you should definitely come here because it really is worth it. they can give you info about whatâ¬"s in them (something you donâ¬"t get from the supermarket!!) and cooking suggestions and things like that.
