Friendly local pub, with fantastic food! We eat there regularly and recommend it to guests (we run a B&B) who always return raving about the quality and variety of the food. Essentially the Plough is a proper 'old fashioned' country pub, which serves its local community well, and has great food to boot. If you are looking for a 'plastic pub' like a Hungry Horse, then this is not for you!!!

The staff are friendly, as are the locals!Friendly local pub, with fantastic food! Rating: 1.00Very Dissapointing.We decided to phone the establishment to find if we had to reserve a table for sunday lunch. On this note we were asked what we would like as sunday lunches sell out very quick, and did we want to order over phone to save disapointment. At first this seemed like a brilliant idea and, a very friendly and nice thing to do. On arrival at this Pub we were asked when we would be ready to eat, again very nice service. Then it all went wrong, when the food arrived on the table. The chicken wasn't roast chicken, it was chicken fillets with herbs on it, not a normal traditional roast chicken. The lamb wasn't lamb,it was lamb shanks and we were charged Â£7.50 instead of the sunday lunch Â£6.95. Also the trimmings again weren't traditional they were broccoli,cauliflower and cabbage. There was no stuffing, carrots or choice's of swede or parsnips also the roast potatoes were over cooked and also the small portions and the large portion were the same. Overall it was unsatisfing and left me hungry and unhappy with my meal. we spoke to the bar staff who were happy to get the manager to pop over and see us.Once we had spoken to the manager of the pub in question she was neither sympathetic or understanding of the service or the food we had received. Not sure if it is still called the twist as it has had quite a few owners and managers over the last few years. Lots of youngsters used to be able to get gigs there and had to sell their own tickets for a cut of the proceeds. So the venue would be full of sweaty hormonal teens dressed in black, listening to their mates playing badly. Never been able rival the arts centre in any way, but promised it would. You do get loads of tribute bands here and some of them have been good and do not cost a lot to see, but there is no parking and it is really very dull, there are better venues than this one.Not sure if it is still called the twist as it has had quite a few owners and managers over the last few years. Rating: 4.00The Bricklayers is a friendly pub with a car park to the rear. They have tables in the bar areas as well as a conservatory and they are popular at lunchtimes. They serve a variety of sandwiches and typical pub food such as burgers and chilli. The menu is rather uninspiring, but what you would expect from a pub menu really. They have two veggie options, which don't really seem to change but they are both on the good side for pub food. Prices are reasonable. The Hub Bar is in the middle of Colchester, where head street meets north hill. The first few times I came here it was on a night out, and itâ¬"s like a very tiny club where the whole thing is like a dancefloor with the bar and everything. I did not realise at first that they were a cafe during the day time - how bizzarre! But anyway, you wouldnâ¬"t know it from going in, as Iâ¬"ve been there for a few lunches now and itâ¬"s like a whole different place. They have big leather sofas in groups, with coffee tables and waiting staff. Went to the Bull last weekend and had a great night, cannot believe how much this place has changed. Looads of live music going on and they even have an Acoustic night for local singer songwriters which I will be coming back for.

I've lived in Colchester for three years and have been visiting V Bar all that time. It's a small building that's easy to miss, but inside it has a warm and friendly atmosphere. Drinks are slightly more than somewhere like Wetherspoons, but it's not 'wine bar' price. On Thursdays (I think!) it's 'toss the boss' night where customers can get half price drinks if they win a toin coss. Throughout the week there is various music playing. Tuesdays are particulary good if you like less mainstream indie music, and Fridays are good for Chart music. It's generally packed. I've been to a couple of parties that have hired out the top floor and it's a really good venue for it - the right size and lots of seating, etc.

Great place to go for a quiet drink. They have Guinness on tap, as well as Greene King IPA, Adnams Bitter and Carlsberg Lager all at reasonable prices. Food can be quite nice and they even do take away on (I believe) every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The locals are friendly and there is a good, peaceful family atmosphere. In the summer there is a beer garden with a child's play area. Perfect for a quiet Sunday meal with the family. There is benches out front which can be useful to sit at if you are a smoker. Doesn't usually get very busy either. A nice, friendly village pub.Great place to go for a quiet drink. The White Hart, Nayland Road, West Bergholt is a very friendly place and the food has always been very good and reasonable, however I have been there a few times and not once has the service been very good, they only have a limited number of staff waiting tables, and to wait nearly an hour for a main course is not unheard of. What a great place to go for a night out in Colchester. They have music 4 nights a week now with a wide range of bands playing. They also play host to the Colchester Funny Farm once a month.If you are looking for Rugby then this is the place to be.
